SLIDING TABLE DESIGN UPDATE: - Aluminum Extrusions and Stops

In this video I show how upgrading my miter gauge spurred me to come up with a better more user friendly fence based on the same 1x1 extrusion.

Excellent design! If you were to drill two index holes through the cleat into the extrusion you would be able to quickly remove and replace the cleat as well with indexing pins. If you didn't want any extra holes in the extrusion you could attach stops inside the T-track and drill into them. (4" strips that could be tighten behind the cleat maybe?) Thank-you for your video series I learn something from every video.

great to see you will be using your sliding table more... i love mine. luckily i can just move my mitre gauge from one to the other with one screw. but that's a great system for your table. if i can find a suitable extrusion that will then make mine perfect as i can just slide across the fence and re tighten without having to take my sacrificial fence off and repositioning.

Making that connection between the extrusion and the sacrificial was the key for me to solving my issues.

I like the way you solved it. By the way, what type of THK linear motion guide are you using?

Love your design! Just ordered a set of bearings to build my own.

+brokenxj I actually abandoned that design about a year and a half ago. I could never make it work seamlessly in the work flow of the table saw the way I was used to using it. I also felt the slider was too far from the blade. I also did not like having to make transitions between normal table saw work and slider work. I just finally realized I much prefer the Festool track saw for panel cutting.

+AskWoodMan Thanks for the feedback. Do you think you would have kept it if you could have taken the fence on and off without having to re-calibrate?

+brokenxj No. I figured a stop system that repositioned the fence repeatably square. The thing about sliding tables is you end up hefting large panels up and into position. I much prefer to move a precise portable saw over a large stationary panel. I kept in on my saw for several years but always found it awkward. It is still leaning up against the wall in my shop waiting to get recycled into something else.

I see what you're saying. No trac saw yet for me so hopefully I'll find it useful considering the investment.

I wonder if stops could be secured in the slide without protruding above the surface could replace the cleat.

What size linear bearing/rails did you use? I built a similar sliding table using some eyeball engineering off your design but it seems a little finicky...I certainly can't hang on it like in your demo vid. I used 13mm rails and 2" steel angle to attach it to the saw.

Great setup. How do you calibrate the actual sliding table mechanism so it's parallel to the blade?

I made it from those three aluminum extrusions, 2 THK bearing rail with 4 bearings and some 1/8 plate steel to attach it to my saw. The extrusions are pinned together with some 1/4 aluminum plate on each end. You can see it this shot. I filmed the entire process but just have not found time to get it edited and posted. Thanks for visiting my channel. Allan

Hi just want to say this is a fabulous sliding table you made and was wondering if I could get the plan's from your setup. I have a spindle moulder but it's missing the sliding table . I dont want to part with it as it was given to me by my father. And would love to make this sliding carriage you made. I'm based in the UK. would be grateful for your advice on the parts and how you made it. such an amazing carriage thanks in advance I've subscribed to your channel

Hi Mark, I abandoned that sliding table about 3 years ago. It just did not work seamlessly with my cabinet style table saw. It is based on THK linear bearings. I filmed making it but have never edited the footage.

Is the sliding table something you are getting set to offer?

  • @AskWoodMan

No. I actually abandoned that setup two and half years ago. It did not work to my needs. I came to the conclusion that it is easier to make panel crosscuts with my Festool track saw and the Multi-Function Table separate from my table saw.

It seems these are all great in theory, but in the average small shop like mine there just is no such thing as enough shelf space to store this beast when not in use. I'm already running out of places to put my every day jigs and so on much less a removable sliding track tacked to the end of my table saw. My shop is narrow. I can only suck in my gut so far before passing out from lack of oxygen. ;)

You are right. They are better in theory than in actual utility. I abandoned that slider 3 years ago. I realized I am much more efficient and accurate using my Festool track saw in a separate setup.

AskWoodMan I'm still back in the stone age with a straight board and a few c-clamps.. Actually I've been using a long extruded shower enclosure piece along with the Makita circular saw. It works.

Hello brilliant and I'll be a customer. Would you please link the bearings you used? I've been pouring over the THK product literature but there are a dizzying amount of options. I'm not sure where to begin. In lieu of your video walk-through on the sliding table build, I'd be in your debt for a link to the bearings you used. Finally, I could buy those 3 aluminum extrusions from your site correct?

I abandoned that slider 4 years ago. I just came to the conclusion that it was more trouble to heft big panels up onto the saw to cut versus use my Festool track saw. It was worth a try but just did not meld with my work flow. I just prefer to crosscut panels in a separate setup. Here is a video series I made where I test the accuracy of my panel sizing technique. kzread.info/head/PLqtTuVwYBfkwpQvBXo2bF-pMca9Z0GrWr

Very flat, but they are extruded and not machined. They are also not priced liked machined straight edges.
