Sliding Down A Snowy Idaho Mountain with

I set out into the Idaho winter with my friends Rob from Revere Overland in his Jeep Wrangler, David from Off the Grind in his Ford Bronco, and Nathan from Outdoor Auto in his Toyota Tundra. We went up the middle fork of the Boise River toward Atlanta Idaho, which is nestled in at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains, just as a snow storm hit the mountains. We got stuck on a mountain crossing and I had to back down a snowy ledge road in order to get out. When we got to the Idaho Mountain town of Atlanta, we ran into severe cold weather that caused many problems, including David’s steering rack freezing. Rob and I also hopped into a Can-Am with Snow Tracks to get to the top of the mountains surrounding Atlanta and get a better view of the Sawtooths.

    If no one has mentioned it to you, RSI has latch covers that they will send you to prevent freezing like that. Dry them out and use a graphic lube and you won’t have that issue once you put the covers on.

  • @Venture2Roam

    @Venture2Roam

    7 ай бұрын

    Ya I saw those. Part of the issue is that if you lift up the wings when it’s snowing…snow gets in the latch and makes it easier for them to freeze. I started locking the latches whenever the wings were up and it helped a lot.

  • @obrianmcc12

    Don't give up on the heater .... I've been running one for 3yrs without issues and the dry heat eliminated any condensation issues we were experiencing. I can say they do not like any restriction on the exhaust and they will smell a bit when new. (especially at start up). IMO some of the smell also comes from the ducting. Mines a 3kw running off a 500w Jackery, but I have been hearing that the 8kw's seem to require higher amperage for startup. It might be that the 8kw's need an actual house battery unless you can find a power supply with a 15 amp rated plug as most max out at 10 amps. I test ran my kit for a few hrs before actually taking it out in the field and I also purchased a handheld CO detector. The heater has always read zero except at the exhaust, however I would always run a portable detector during the night for peace of mind. A Propex or Wabasto is on our list if the cheaper units fail.

  • @Venture2Roam

    @Venture2Roam

    6 ай бұрын

    Awesome info. If I can make it more dummy proof and dependable I'll keep trying. I got tired of messing with though, so it's just sitting in my garage at the moment...maybe I'll switch to a 3Kw just to lower the power draw..I can't imagine 3Kw not being enough to heat a tent.

  • @crazyidahoguy
    @crazyidahoguy6 ай бұрын

    @venture2roam the ket to the diesel heater is that you need a semi rigid dryer vent for the intake that pulls clean air away from the unit. I use a 5' tube on my heater so I never pull in any exhaust.

    Check the wire gauge on your disel heater plug. I had a similar issue and realized that even though it was advertised to work for diesel heaters, it wasn't thick enough. Get a 12AWG minumum. Also make sure your outlet tube isnt crimped or blocked in any way. I've had all the codes lol. You also need to clean it and replace the glow plug every so often. Once you figure it out you'll never suffer ag8.

    @16:30 "We're coming up to Barber Flat." - Barber Flat and Barber Flat Guard Station (GS) are on the North Fork of the Boise River, and Alexander Flat is on the Middle Fork of the Boise River. The trail from Idaho City to Atlanta went through both flats, and there used to be a travelers' station and a CCC Camp located on Alexander Flat. The CCC Camp foundations are still visible between the road and the river. I was sure surprised to see the Eagle nest on top of the pinnacle @ 41:55. Cool view of the nest. BTW - I lived at Barber Flat GS, Deer Park GS, Dutch Frank GS, and Atlanta GS during the summers of 1973 to 2017 while working for the Forest Service...

    Did you have a solution for the diesel heater fumes? I had the same situation and it wasn’t from the exhaust it was like it was pumping it through the hose. Odd… no fuel leaks or anything

  • @Venture2Roam

    @Venture2Roam

    It might be caused by spilling diesel when filling up the tank...could also be the heater just burning off initial crud...You might just run it for a few hours and see if it gets better?

    The diesel heater needs any where from 9-12amps to power up through startup. Your power station has a regulated 10amp car socket. It’s likely your diesel heater needs to pull slightly over 10 amps for startup. There are only a handful of power stations that have a car socket that supports more than 10 amps.

  • @Venture2Roam

    Chains are fantastic for lots of situations. On this trip we had "snow socks" that give traction similar to chains. I didn't feel like I needed anything on my truck with the Recon Grapplers. Also - it wasn't a slippery road that turned us around, it was a large washout..it would have given me pause on a dry road. The supply van for the Beaver Lodge has chains on all 4...and they passed us on the road cruising down the river at like 35 mph lol.
