Sleeve Fitting Diagnosing Sleeve Fitting Issues

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Over the past couple of weeks we've been diving deep into sleeve fitting. In the first video of the series we talked about the armhole shape and size and determined how to assess if it will be a good foundation for your sleeve. In the second video of the series we talked about the sleeve itself and determined how to assess if it will fit into the bodice armhole correctly.
This week I want to demonstrate how to asses and trouble shoot the fit of the sleeve in a "real life" sample so I'm sending a big THANK YOU to Jill who has allowed me to use her photos in this video. I have no doubt that this example will help someone else struggling with fitting sleeves.
You'll find all the resources mentioned in this video here: www.inhousepatternsstudio.com...

Trouble shooting and assessing issues with garments is something all young designers need to learn but so few schools teach.

OMG Alexandra! You are giving us so much information! These are the fitting issues that have been bugging me for years! I have been addressing the t-shirt fitting issues last several days after watching you newer video about the t-shirt fitting and made four samples and have still not resolved all of them. Now I have got some more ideas from this video. Sometimes I get disheartened and think that I will never achieve the perfect fit. I have seen your perfectly fitted jacquard jacket made with Style Arc pattern and honestly I could not believe how perfectly it fits you. It was like seeing a miracle. There is no more beautiful sight to behold than a perfectly fitting garment. Thank you so much for the superb and generous Information that you are providing us in your videos.

Your videos are always excellent as you're such a great communicator and you talk on key topics and theory that really help the home sewists. This is why your courses are so good.

If you take length out of the armhole do you need to adjust the sleeve?

This assessment type of video is so valuable for those of us learning and tailoring our own clothes. Like one issue I’ve been figuring out myself on a dress shirt (male) is when I slim the sleeve, make the arm hole somewhat smaller, but still ending up with too much excess fabric (on the sleeve). Front view of sleeve looks fine, but back arm hole must be too short... Didn’t know what the appropriate action would be, so I had placed a dart at the back shoulder horizontally in line with an already existing seam. Seems to work much better, but as to whether it’s the most “appropriate” solution, I don’t know... I know there are lots of potential problems, but this is still great! This has helped a lot.

Excellent Alexandra, thanks. These adjustments exactly mirror what I do to my sleeve heads. And for all those people that think I look like Golem, nope and I have excellent posture. Jill and I just have bony shoulders at the front. My physio explained that it may be because I’m super flexible - does that ring a bell Jill?

Thank you for your video. My drag lines are diagonally in the front from just below the shoulder to the elbow. I like 3/4 length sleeves. Do I reverse the procedure.?

Ditto, thank you! I have a question, the sleeve head moves, but does this affect the two side seams on the sleeve? I need some paper and scissors ...

I am curious, Alexandra, on what changes need to be made to a Two Piece long sleeve when we rotate it for a forward shoulder? The under sleeve seams no longer are in the “traditional location” after this adjustment - Do we leave the under sleeve as is, or do the seams of both sleeve pieces now need to be adjusted to fall in the correct place? Help! I’m at a loss here.

I think the method is the same, shift the sleeve head forward, you will just have the extra step of truing the sleeve seams so that the undersleeve and top sleeve blend together along the sleeve cap seam line. Stacking the seams will help you do this. It's difficult to talk specifics but sometimes when you put the sleeve sections together, things become clearer.
