Sleeping in my Car for Landscape Photography
Landscape photography requires a certain amount of commitment whether it is a long hike or an early start. In this video I aim to photograph sunset and sunrise in the lake district national park, however I have nowhere to stay for the night. Wild camping is out of the question, campsites were full and hotels are too expensive. My last option was to sleep in my car and it paid off as I woke up to beautiful mist and fog which made for some great landscape photography.

Thomas Heaton Excellent video as always. So very glad the mist came through for you. Torn between the colour and black and white, but I do love the lone sheep in the dark area of the B&W shot. Ordered both your book and calendar and they just arrived two days ago. Love them both. JoAnne

Definitely the colour version Thomas, I like how you can see the blue water in the foreground and to the left rear of the image, it's a nice contrast of colours.

Hi Thomas, if you are looking for more separation in BW photo use color filters. It is of course possible simulate in post process but not everytime because color filter alter how much light of given color is touching sensor. I thought that color filters are obsolete in digital era but they are not.
Tom, there's a gentleness to your videos. There's an integrity, a respect and a simplicity. I would rate you as a bloody decent film maker at this stage. Also the music that you choose and how you use it. These videos are beautiful and an art form all by themselves.

I love when you explain what is and isn't working in a composition. I sometimes find that Thomas Heaton voice in my head when out in the field.
The one attentive little sheep absolutely makes the black and white image work. Really highlights the dark band of grass and provides a great counterpoint to the raised group of trees.
Both are great images but I think I prefer the soft colour shot. It really conveys the morning light in a way that the monochrome one doesn’t so much. Fantastic video as always! I learn so much from you, thanks.
Soft colour image for me personally, just gives it a bit more atmosphere and it's what the eye would see - great video.
B&W really brings out the main copse and the sheep is the icing on the cake.
Black and White is my favorite. I love the higher contrast and the quiet that it lends the photo.
I used to sleep in my car on travel assignments so I didn't have to pay for hotels. haha This was my life.

Sounds like a good idea.
The colour one, most definitely. It adds smoothness and a touch of serenity, wonder and mysticism. Reminds me more of a painint too. The B/W one is just harsh and hits me in the face.
The black and white one is looking good to me. It is just the right amount of calm and contrast.
I like the B&W image because the single sheep lower in the frame draws the viewer in to the composition, and then the eye just follows into the trees and the mist and the hill behind.
I love the color version! It’s so soft and atmospheric. I feel like it puts me there. Another job well done mate!
The higher contrast B&W version wins, I'd be curious if the trees in the background change a different color in the fall (autumn?) and provide that separation too.
Black and White. I prefer it because the subject is so timeless and pastoral that I feel the b/w speaks to that.
Awesome video Thomas. Thanks for sharing.
Have to say the colour version is doing it for me. Softer and more natural - Great video Tom 👍🏻
Really like the black and white. The tree gives the image depth when it’s in B&W
Another great video Thomas awesome! I love the black and white, beautiful!
I love B&W images but on this occasion the colour won it for me, just loved how the layers and separation was defined. It great when Mother Nature keeps you hanging on for that one brief moment
The B&W one. The other one looks a bit empty without the sheep now. It's more dynamic and keeps the eye moving from the sheep to the trees to the background and back.
You could have stayed at my place. It’s a 5 min drive to there. Was there myself the other morning in the same conditions. Good work. I also shot the spider webs. Fantastic.

B&W does it for me, the white sheep welcomes you into the scene like a master of ceremonies. Lifetime ski bum here, sleeping in a car, no problem. Great vid!
Great video again. Wow, it was tough to choose between the two. Both of them had a story to tell but I was later inclined towards the soft color version as I felt it had a more profound story to tell. The choice of going with a soft color gave it a deeper meaning. Simple but strong. Thank Thomas.

I think it is awesome the way you recognized the potential of that little mound with trees given the right conditions and doggedly pursued it until you were there at the right moment. Bravo!
Thanks for the tutorial. Great final shot!
As much as I love black and white images, the colour one is for me. Looked like a painting.
6:17 that horizontally blown tree thing is a square composition if ever I saw one! That jumped at me from the background, there was no way I was casually walking past that.

You truly capture the essence of landscape photography in your videos.
I can't pick between the two, I love them both. In this case the deciding factor would be decor and where the picture will be displayed. Can't go wrong with either. ❤️
The black and white image for me. However would love to see the scene with full autumn colours as well! Great content as always....keep up the good work!
Hi Tom! I really like the spider web photo! Regarding the last image the monochrome does it for me, the coloured one would be nice later on the fall when the leaves change, just to add that little extra to the scene.
Your videos are real and always fun to watch...I also learn something every time!! Thank you
Great video Tom I like the soft colour the best. Both amazing shots 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
The color version is missing the sheep in the foreground :D Usually I'm not a B&W person, but I think here the high contrast BW fits better with no mist in front of the tree.
Camping in the car: Hey Tom! Great to see your getting out'n'about, post-lockdown. An idea for you: I've been considering something similar, for the sake of birdwatching and perhaps some photography, too. What I've done with my old Saab estate (5'7" boot with seats folded down. I'm 6'3" but this is okay if lay diagonally) is to use a sun-screen for the windscreen, and for the other windows - I pushed some stiff paper into the window apertures to make a template, and used these to cut out some foam-board from Hobbycraft (£10 for four A1 sheets). The cards just push into place, held up with some white-tack. I still need to think about ventilation (I see, you used wind-deflectors in your van, one video says - a good idea). These cards also make great sun-blinds when I leave my car parked in the open in full sun-light. Saves the car's interior overheating and the seats fading!

Jeez, what a beautiful video Tom. I can’t imagine all the effort that goes into getting all the different shots to put something like this together. Makes me relieved I’m not a KZreadr (and glad you are). Thanks man.
Tom, for the first time in my photographic years I have to say that BOTH images work for me. As much as I love a mono landscape image which in a majority of cases will ‘fix’ that colour scene that just isn’t working, your final image pays homage to both genres perfectly. The pastels in the colour image and the tones in the mono creating the layers and separation. Sublime.
Had no idea you sold the Van, would love to hear some background, why you’re switching and all that. Very much considering getting a van and convert it myself as well

I usually prefer B & W, but in this case I feel the colour option looks much better - it adds the extra punch in the image with mist all around. Even the light feels more enhanced with colour adding its touch & feel to the whole image. Colour has added a punch :)
19:56 I think you meant the shutter speed is 1/50sec.
From a woman's perspective, getting caught peeing in the bush is definitely worse. A pose with the right amount of contortion necessary to not pee on myself is way more embarrassing than talking into a camera!! :D

I take my hat off to you for the amount of effort that you go to capture 3rd person footage of you going to your destination or at the site. The night shot with you walking with a torch was superb. I feel that it is one of the elements that differentiates you from the others.... and the reason that I keep myself subscribed and coming back to watch your vlogs when with others I eventually get bored and move on. Well done... and thank you. Your videographer/story telling skill continues to influence my own approach... with my kids memories videos. PS. This week I also got the bonus about the separation lesson... I’m a new photographer and that was a great insight
B&W all day long - contrast, mystery, sheep. Actually, it's all about the sheep. She makes that shot!

Same, the sheep adds a touch of foreground interest that is lacking in the colour one.
I think getting caught having a "pee to camera" is infinitely worse : )
Great video, for me the soft colour. Loved the image of the ghostly trees in the fog. Fantastic. Well done
Great video on so many levels, thank you Thomas. That last shot is great!
Prefer the colour version - has more interest for me, personally.
I’d rather get caught having a pee as it is a more natural thing to do than filming a piece to camera!

Back in the 70s I had a Mini Minor van. I could take the two pins out that formed the hinge for the rear of the passenger seat and remove it, then I had a floor long enough to sleep on while away surfing weekends here on the east coast of Australia. While living in the UK for some years in the 80s we (wife and son with me by then) had a Ford Escort van with a pop-up roof camper conversion. Folding the rear seat right down and clipping in a floor extension out the back made it long enough to sleep two, with out son (age from 5 to 9 through that time) slept in a roll-out stretcher up in the roof. It was a piece of steel pipe that clipped into sockets at each end and canvas between that and the side of the van. Somehow we managed to spend holidays all over the place in that van, and it had a little gas stove and sink built in there somewhere as well.
