It's maybe much more simple. Old slavic word for Slavs sounds like "sloven" or "slovyen". Slovenia and Slovakia (in slovak language Slovensko) have directly origin in this word. Word "slovo" in all slavic languages means... surprisingly... word. From Slavs point of view, Slavs where people, who were able to speak in understandable (their) language. Compared to that exists word "Nemec". Today it is direct transaction for "German". Word "nemy" means... dumb. :)

It is what the catholics of the west called the slavic orthodox people of the east. I just can't understand how no one knows this!!! Look how many slavs there are today. Do you think they're all from the one group of people or tribe?????? Theres no such ethnic group in history called "slavs" All the orthodox people are slavs. The slavic countries are made up of many different ethnicities and DNA's.

The ancient Macedonians, Serbians, then Bulgar mongolic tibes who came to the Balkans from the Volga river and later Russians and others became “slavs” when they converted to slavic orthodox. The Catholics in the west called them “Slavs” because they were slavic orthodox.

Таким образом самоназвание «славяне» - это «славные», «знаменитые люди», то есть люди, о которых слышно, о которых говорит молва, о которых идет слава.Славяне первые в войнах, в спортивных достижениях, в научных открытиях, первые в космосе. Самая большая этническая группа в Европе. Остальным народам такие достижения даже не снились. Насколько я знаю Венгры произошли от Гуннов, где Гунны - это Союз Славянских, Германских, Тюркских племён. То есть в венграх есть славянская кровь.

Absolute majority of slaves traded in Prague were of slavic origin. Bohemia got under Habsburg rule in 1526, while earliest evidence of slave trade is...6th or 7th century (i think, definitely before 1000AD ), muslim traveler, i just cant remember his name :-/ I would even dare to say it was the biggest slave trading center in mainland europe. Just look at its location, close enough to the west, close enough to the slavic east, close enough to the muslim/byzantine east, close enough to viking north...easily reachable by land or rivers. :)

Viking is a profession, not a nationality. The Vikings were Scandinavians, but in the Viking teams there were many Slavs, and sometimes also Finns and Balts. Relations of the Slavs and Vikings were very close. For example: Daughter of Mieszko I (king of Poland) named Świętosława became the wife of the king of Sweden, Eric the Victorious. She changed her name to Sygrydda Storråda. It was she who organized the Christianization mission to Sweden. Her son Cnut the Great conquered England. The Slavs also formed their own Viking-like teams - Chąśnica. Their boats were larger and more sluggish than those of the Vikings. However, they could transport horses. Chąśnics got off on the shore and commuted to the village they wanted to assault.

In addition to the video. 1. The word "slave" did not come from the name of Slavic nations. It is an old greek word σκλάβος, that had been used way before the Slavic nations met Greeks. Scandinavian word for slaves was "throll". 2. The word "Rus" came from Finnish "ruotsi", that meant "to row". Finns call Sweden as "Ruotsi" even now. And according to archeology of old Russian towns, vikings became the elite and warrior feudal caste of Eastern Slavic nations. They plundered Western lands and traded, hired as mercenaries in the East. 3. Kievan Rus wasn't Kievan. It had never been called this way, it was just Rus. Kiev was the third Russian capital. And historians use "Kievan" for Rus just for historian purposes to study the exact time periods of Rus. And it's weird to name Russia as Moscow Russia or Petersburg Russia too.

Artoria Pendragon I had to warn people not to raise this butthurt demon. But, eventually "Russia" is just a Greek name for the land of Rus. Greek Byzantium culture was dominant for thousand years, so, there was no shame to use Greek words to name countries (Frankia, for example, in old spelling). Rus and Russia have the same meaning, it should be obvious. And capitals of Rus during all time (duchy - tzardom - empire - republic) are following: Ladoga - Novgorod - Kiev - Vladimir - Moscow - Petersburg - Moscow.

Artoria Pendragon Try to think on this again. "Rus" is a Slavic word, "Russia" is a Greek word ("-ia" is a Greek suffix). ))) Actually, Moscow Duchy was a part of feudal Rus. Moscovia was a name of the territory just on several European maps, but citizens of Moscow Duchy called themselves "Russians" as well as citizens of Kiev and Halich Duchies too. Kiev was the capital of Rus till 1240, when it was destroyed by mongols. Capital moved to the north to Vladimir. After that time, Kiev became just a border town of Poland or Russia. It became a capital of Ukraine (not Rus again))) only in the 20th century.

Map of Russia is cool looking but the life on the most part of it is not so cool. Africa and Persian Gulf have more resourses and cheeper to get. That's why European colonialism even now keeps messy situation in Africa and the Gulf to control resourses, and China actively invests in African countries.

First of all Vikings were, at least in many cases, Slavic themselves. We know, that two vikings who sailed two pre-Columbus America were Slavs and their names got recorded. I remember one of them called "Bistravoda", which could have been a nickname. Second, vikings NEVER TRIED to invade Poland and Pomerania, which was a Polish province, even though Poland is the closest land from Scandinavia and also it was very rich during antiquity and the middle ages. Why ? Oh, mainly because Pomeranians/ the seashore Slavs were equal or better sailors then vikings and never hesitated in making retaliatory invasions. We know of many Slavic invasions into Scandinavia, usually Denmark or Sweden. In modern time Poles captured Stockholm in 1598.

The Vikings were a profession, not an ethnic group. Improve your title on Nordic vs. Slavic. You can learn more about Slavic vikings by reading about the Byzantine Empire where very often Vikings were hired as mercenaries. As for the origin of the name "Slavs". . . it would seem that long ago such words as "sława=fame" and its derivatives as "chwała=glory" was recognized by most of us as the answer. Unfortunately, this is not true. Slavic comes from the word "Słowa=Words", which meant that all these peoples were able to communicate because they had a similar language (linguistic community of Words). In some translations one can also find such gems as, for example, non-German gems. As you can see, our reluctance towards the Germanic peoples is probably genetically determined( heh). As for the English word "Slave", the truth is that the Slavic nations developed very rapidly during the Roman Empire, which led them to press against the Roman borders. These in turn, as they used to do, enslaved everyone and then approved the name of tribes and transformed it into the word "slavus";. This does not change the fact that a Latin "slave" is the "servus" from which the word "service" originates today. Pan Przemysław, if you ever have to listen to the laughter of the English about the origin of the "Slavic" again, remind them that it works the other way round, and tell them, moreover, that the Slavs are the largest ethnic group of white people on earth, and that we do not have the dark visions they have before us. Of course, in terms of ethnicity. We cannot exclude the possibility that the United Kingdom will continue to exist for centuries, but with "darker complexion" members of the royal family. After all, after the last revelations, they are on the right track. Pozdrawiam, bracia i siostry Słowianinie.

@David Szcz someone from the Slavic nobility could probably join the Viking campaign (the Slavic prince Vladimir, who became an Orthodox saint because he baptized the Rus), in fact, the entire military elite learned from the Scandinavians how to fight, supplementing with their knowledge how to fight in their own area. The Slavs called them Varangians or traders, because they didn’t have such a massacre in the territory of Rus as in Western Europe, because at that time we had the most profitable trade route to Byzantium, and the close ties of the Slavic and Scandinavian nobility helped to maintain relatively friendly trade relations
