A obsessive fan abducts an author for the plot of an unreleased novel.
SLAVE TO THE PAGE is used with permission from Ravi Ghelani. Learn more at / sttpfilm .
Arthur Williams is a reclusive, successful author who has been wrestling with writer's block for the five years since his last blockbuster book release. One unassuming day, he's abducted, taken blindfolded in the middle of nowhere and held up. But not for cash: his kidnapper is Dev, an obsessive fan who's been frustrated waiting for Arthur's next book.
Unhinged but passionate about Arthur's novels, Dev demands to know what happens in the books, why Arthur hasn't written anything and any other secrets he can reveal about the plots and characters that Dev has come to care so much about. But as Arthur negotiates a tricky psychological dance with Dev, he must use all his wits and intelligence to survive this sticky situation.
Directed and written by Ravi Ghelani, this entertaining and compelling short thriller touches on an array of fascinating contemporary topics, from celebrity worship, toxic fandom, men's mental health and social divides in class and race in England. But it's really a collision between two lost souls, each of whom is at sea in their way. Brought to life with excellent storytelling and deft craftsmanship, their meeting is full of tension, dark humor and gripping suspense, made resonant because the conflicts emerge from a deep understanding of character.
The premise can't help but echo the ongoing fan discourse around a prominent series like Game of Thrones, where legions of fans have been waiting, often with great impatience, for the next book installment of the story and world they've become deeply invested in. But the writing takes the concentrated format of the short film to examine just how deeply someone can attach themselves to a story, whether it is in film or written form.
Played by actor Trevor Sellers, Arthur is the character fighting his way out of the dilemma, but the storytelling also focuses on developing Dev's layers. Both viewers and Arthur think Dev is "crazy" at first, but as their conversation develops, we see how Dev has been disenfranchised in his own life, often as an outsider. As Dev, actor Manpreet Bachu is surprisingly sympathetic, able to play both Dev's mental imbalance and innate brightness, hit moments of wry comedy and still convey genuine feelings of loneliness and despair. Isolated, he has turned to Arthur's books for some kind of emotional sustenance at his worst point -- but he's been waiting long enough for the next installment. Taking a cue from Arthur's heroes, Dev takes matters into his own hands.
From top to bottom, SLAVE TO THE PAGE grabs attention and goes on a rollercoaster ride, and as it dives into its tense, thrilling conclusion, it also asks thought-provoking questions about what happens when our strongest emotional connections and ties are not to people and real-life places but to characters and worlds in stories, as imperfect, slanted or removed from reality as they are. We, and Arthur, are left bereft and somber by the powerful ending, contemplating these questions and more.

I’m a fresh film graduate trying to get my feet off the ground. This short film really shows that you can make something great out of anything. This is so inspiring and it’s fire asf 🔥

For a more comical version, check out (I think it was) "Bloodride, Season 1, Episode 3" from a few years back. It's the same idea: a character in a novel doesn't realize they're a character in a novel.
The Fan. The fans get agitated if and when their idols delay, or just stopped caring. The fans feel orphaned.
the end made it seem the whole thing was in the authors head.
A unhappy, uncomfortable, yet compelling story

The question is was in all in the authors head, part of the book writing process, or did the author have some type of voodoo over the "kidnapper" I personally think it was all part of book and not real at all

How is nnobody commenting on the author's racism? J. K. Rowling anyone?

This made me decide against kidnapping Neil Gaiman. It wouldn’t go well for me, I’m quite certain, and besides he’s such a nice chap. I can’t help but wonder about authors who’ve passed away, though. No, I don’t mean that I would kidnap them, I just… wonder… what with wormholes and all… if our beloved Sir Terry Pratchett might’ve been secretly pulled into a parallel universe?

Hi, armchair psychologist Paradox here, right away I’m noticing hyperactivity, eccentricity, notably ocd and wait do I know that actor? I find these characters really relatable and interesting. I believe I notice a manic episode right there in our charming prota- anta- but it’s premeditated? So could it really be mania? Like I said armchair psychologist let me do my speculation research comes later. This writing is the standard I want to hold myself to, no I refuse to write anything less inspiring than this.

Yooo.... The actor's did a great job !~
I could tell that the author could manipulate reality just by writing as soon as he began describing his kidnapper and the situation he was in without even knowing what he looked like
Nice take on Stephen King's book, Misery, (which was also made into a movie). Was the kidnapped author merely replaying the book in his mind? Apparently so, as the very end show his eyes focus on a white 'dot' that floated by, and onto the car's window. Well done!
A red car, an Austin Maxi 😍
Daniel Rajcliffe?
Fantastically acted! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The moment the writer realised he was in control of the story was revealed by the actors expression, quite an incredible achievement, relating so much with an expression. This was a real gem, the acting and directing, everything came together so subtly and perfectly.
Loved it. 👏 the idea, performance & execution. Bravo!
Nice. Basically 'Misery' in a nutshell, but still....

I hate tragic endings. Was hoping he and the young man made friends and the young man helped the author write new material based on his own life stories and experiences.

Acting is fab

The ending makes me think that that it’s a combination of either a) the author has been through this so many times that he knows what the police say B) he called the police somehow C) this was done to get the guy arrested and the author was acting the whole time

It is unclear whether he used manipulation or the guy just assimilated some character that fitted on his physical/tastes with sort of coincidence. But small flashes of his improvised writing have nice chances that made the guy go really mad with 4th wall feelings, he could have surrended to the police but instead he went berserk and died but he said previously that he wanted the know the about the future book and go back to his "normal" life.
Misery
Well done. Very original turn of events. However, the kidnapper had me bored already after a minute because he was the usual "creepy weirdo" character that filmmakers seem to reserve for "crazy" people (e.g. worrying about his daindruffs). Fortunately, this sort of behavior didn't escalate and the story managed to turn to something more interesting and original.
Ever seen the movie Misery?
