In Nordic tradition it was bears and wolves, I am a shaman, a healer, and these animals headed people. They were revered as very strong, and tough. Warriors used the skin to fight in battles. Not devil, not evil, but strong. Wearing goat horns, and painting your face black isn't racist, nor is it evil. It is part of our folklore.

Nice video forJerry Afriyie & Kick Out Black Piet in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) they still have to learn a lot about traditions especially those of Europe, in particular the Dutch version which does not belong to blackface like 100 years ago in America with The Materials Show.

As an American, it is ridiculous we have this “wokeness” that looks an everything through the lens of the US history when these traditions are ancient.

This is exactly what is going on, but these traditions will die out within the coming generation. It survived the church, but it wont survive modern society.

I hope you realise how much it means to me (being Dutch) to see an American say this. Glad people are seeing through the woke nonsense. Thank you. 😊

My question is how did it go from a bear, to a devil, to a black man ? Yes the origin comes from ancient folkfore, but the portrayal of "zwarte piete" in the 21st century with dark brown makeup ,big red lips, and curly black hair wigs comes from where ?

That is a very interesting question. And an important one, which I answered in the last december issue of a Dutch opinion and politics magazine HP/deTijd and in several Dutch books and documentary's. Of which one is available in the English language ('Wild Geraas' and 'My Encounters with the Devil') via paganeurope.com/ These articles, books and films are the result of a more than 30 years journalistic research for which I filmed in many European countries. Since these publications there is much support and acclaim from international scientist for my research. Summaries of answers to your questions are also given in short on: vimeo.com/361064978 At this very moment academics and scientists are preparing a publication on the academic internet platform: academia.edu, about my films. It gives a deeper explanation and insight in why Zwarte Piet got in the last 170 years these characteristics you mentioned above. The first brown faces were on television. When colour tv came around, the national welcoming broadcast gave Piet a brown face, to be able to see his expressions. Another goal was to make tv programs less scary for children. The pitch black face was intimidating to a lot of people. In earlier times, Piet was used to frighten kids into good behaviour, and beating was an educational tool. Now we know that it is counter productive (and illegal). So Sesame Street's Count von Count lost his thunder and lightning, Piet lost his black face and became more and more friendly.

Lips & Wigs: beautification, tradition, availability: Traditionally, a burned wine cork was used to blacken faces, while mother's lipstick made your lips red. About every household had a cork and lipstick, so it's a simple and fully covering face mask. Then professional theatre make-up came around, which was easier to apply and remove, and more beautiful. We got richer and artificial wigs became affordable. The wigs were a blessing, as you didn't need to blacken the whole ears and beyond the hair line anymore. Another advantage was that kids didn't instantly identify you as uncle Bob.
