I like this technique in general! After being a hobby gamer for nearly 45 years, I’ve learned that I hate painting. It’s just not fun for me so I don’t want to get better if that means it takes longer. A fast effective method is amazing for those of us who love minis but not the process of painting them.

Smash that like button people! Let's keep the craft in dungeon craft : ) Excellent short form video on slap chopping. I'm in my first few months of painting and after many hours of youtube research, this summarizes the method that I've decided to use to paint unprimed models. When I have bought preprimed wizkids ones, I just roll with their white primer. It takes me a lot longer than 15 minutes to do this process, but I'm still learning.

@@matthewmcguigan4293 ahh, persuasion in action! Need to resort to the prosecco or the good whisky - 'cause, 'candy's dandy but liquor's quicker!' (Now was that Ogden Nash, or Willy Wonka) 😉 Joking aside, it sounds like a great plan. Two pairs of hands will get through full armies or dungeons of minis so much quicker and it's good to work on things together. Better than just dropping-off, drooling and snoring in front of the TV. 😁

Underpainting (or SlapChop as the internet has taken to calling it) is a very old painting technique. super easy to learn and do. You can do your initial coat in different colors besides gray to come up with different effects, for example if you wanted to start with a base Olive color and drybrush up your highlights, your skin tones will have a much more natural look. you could do the same with purples for darker completions as well. I typically don''t go full black as I feel it overpowers the colors too much, I work with medium grays and brighten from there. But every mini is an experiment and you should try different things. it's the journey that makes the artist.

Quick and easy with really convincing results, the best thing about playing tabletop is you do NOT need to spend so much time on every detail at painting minis because you won't even see them at the table without picking up the mini! The overall cool looking effect and consistency is what you need. Also a tip for priming/basing minis: you may use dark grey instead of black and very light grey instead of white while basing and/or highlighting (I do it myself and IMO it is better :D )

Slap chop is great for beginners and kids. My young son didn't much enjoy miniature painting until I thought him slap chop. Now he loves painting his figs. I enjoy the technique very much so. A couple pointers...Spend a lot of time getting those grey and white dry brush steps in good. A good quality large makeup brush works well. Don't use a paper towel to take the paint off. You'll create a lot of texture on the miniatures from strands of paper towel that will get on the miniature. Use a texture pallet instead. Also, slap chop doesn't work well on flat surfaces, it works best on textures surfaces. Thankfully, most of Fantasy models are highly textured. For flat surfaces you want to mix in other techniques such as layering and glazing. Lastly, after doing slap chop go in a do some highlights (as shown in the video). It really helps take the model to another level.

I was an early adopter of the speed paint/highlight combo, and recommend it. The highlights add quite a bit to the model, and can be done later when you have time. However, Prof. DM missed a step. When you're done with a model you should protect it with a matte or dullcoat clear spray. (Although I suppose one could argue that's technically not part of painting a figure.) p.s. Hey, DB, have fun on your holiday! 😁

Some people give the Slapchop method crap, but if you want to get some minis done fast and on the table it's a great method to use and has basic steps that are great for beginners. Plus, you can always lavish on more detail, like highlights, later and experiment with more subtle gradients using various grays and whites (or even other colors) and lighter dry brushing to really build up the transitional effects. But if you just want to get some dudes on the table for everyone's PCs to fight, it's the way to go..

Kind of a mis en place for modeling, as it seems there’s a not insignificant amount of setup to have all your paints and tools and table ready to go. Anyone can tell there’s a lot of experience behind this video. Although, if the channel already has a video like that, could I ask that a link be included in future painting or modeling videos? For example, while I can’t speak for everyone, but when the channel has kind of alluded to “how to setup” in TTRPG reviews, I always appreciate it (especially when minimalist is appropriate). Either way, thank you again. Love me some DungeonCraft!

The white coat could also have been done as a zenithal prime. You cover the entire thing with the black primer first. Then you go over that with a white or at least a lighter colored primer only from the direction that light would fall on it (you of course decide where that is). This tends to make a big difference in your final results.

I think slap chop is a great way to get into painting and honestly its looks nice on the table, but I think it should be used as a stepping stone to learning how to paint miniature properly, I kind of use slap chop for minis where the series doesn't use very much detail in them, like for instance the final girl minis, but when you have games where the miniatures use good quality minis with sharp details then I will always go full out on them, like Oathsworn or an awaken realms game.

Will there be a Dua Lipa miniature to accompany Deathbringer in the future? I'm sure we'd all enjoy that! ;)

I always needed too long for my board game minis so i didn't really started for the most games. Now i don't have an excuse to not paint them. Slap chop has a decent outcome.

Yummy comment for the algorithm. edit: this does make me want to convert from digital to miniatures.

I like painting well enough but just don't have the time. It takes months for me to get anything done using traditional methods but I can knock out a bunch of minions over a lunch break with the slap chop method.

And just as you said in your video, if you go over heavily with a mid gray first and then lighter with a linen white you can get edges and highlights that really pop. And that blood red looks fantastic!

Question, Professor: Which houserule do you prefer? Combine STR and CON into "Brawn"? Or splitting DEX into two: Agility (for AC, Stealth, Reflex Saves) and Dexterity (for ranged/finesse attks, slight of hand, lockpicking, etc) ? Appreciate your thoughts.

Deathbringer needs a parody of Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” called “Decapitating.”

My friend used to swear by airbrushing. Said it saved him hundreds of hours, and his results ran from great to spectacular.

What kind of paint or technique are you using for the thin paint over the grey tones?

Hi! I'm new at painting minis and I'd like to save as much money as possible. What do you recommend me to use instead of speed paints as a cheaper option? Maybe acrylic mixed with other chemicals? Thank you in advance

They are the cheapest option. Acrylic paints are ink mixed with medium. Goobertown Hobbies, another KZread channel, has lots of videos on how to make your own. BUT...it's a process of trial and error and you will spend more money on ink and medium than you will by just buying the starter speed paints.

Currently remodeling a room in my house for printing and want to start painting my own mini's. Do you recommend clear coating the slap chopped mini's?

Depends on if they are showpieces or practical play pieces. If you expect players to handle them, I'd use Army Painter Quickshade, then a Matt spray.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 thanks for the quick reply. Sounds great that's what I'll go with then since most will be play pieces

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 sorry just another quick question I was going to paint a faulty dragon mini as my first paint but I just used cheap rustoleum primer and it seems to rub off on my skin almost like chalk when I touch it. Do I need to get army painter or like colour forge primer and if I do will it adhere to the resin better?
