Skywatcher Star Adventurer
Ғылым және технология
I demo the Skywatcher Star Adventurer!
I contacted Skywatcher about an inexpensive, but useful, mount for tracking stars for astrophotography. I wanted a mount under $500 which could hold a star "still" for photography, at 400mm focal length, for 30-60 seconds. They sent me one for free to evaluate and here it is!
Cons:
1. Some plastic parts (not needed for operation)
2. Needs angled wedge and counter weight to be useful
3. Limited payload weight
4. Polaris finger scope light failed very quickly
Pros:
1. Light weight, easy setup
2. VERY good unguided star tracking!
3. Heavy metal construction
4. Long battery life!
5. Polaris finder scope.
6. Lots of great knobs & parts designed to simplify use

Thanks Tom. I feel that was a very honest and good review. I have ordered one and can't wait to play with it.
I am shopping mounts like this, I can not think of a better tutorial/review that was more informative to my decision in such a direct way. Not to say I will purchase one .. but wow if I had a list of videos like this one .. I could choose in one afternoon. Good job. Everything I wanted to know.
Thanks a lot for the review! So does it start working automatically when one of the modes are selected? I've seen some photos and videos where they use a cable to sync with the camera but I'd like to know if it's ok without the cable, thanks.

0verclock the camera control cable is only an "addon", you can run your camera like normal or with a timer or something like this and it starts instantly working if you set it to 1x celestial or any other mode
Great video. I just received my sky watcher yesterday so very new to this. Loved the photos. Would like to know a few things. Camera, lens, exposure time. So I can get an idea of where to start. Do you have a good app that will let you plan ahead a location and time for the polar scope charts? I do not have a telescope. Just a Dslr. Can you connect a DSLR to a telescope and use this unit? Recommendations ? Thank you again.
hi tom just unboxed mine a few questions i wonder if u could help? first can i get a 2.5 !! jack splinter so i can run two cameras on the set up.. by the way i dont know if u found this but the allen key they supplied is not the correct size it seems too loose? also i never got the small adjuster allen key luckily i have a few of them .. did u get one ? in the optical illuminator placky bag i had another piece of plastic circular with a few pieces moulded in a bit like a castle any idea what it might be colin uk love yer channel
Hello , thanks for the good review. I'm getting one of these soon but I was wondering if there's any difference between the red, the black or the green and white one.
Good review but a shame u didnt do the advanced firmare update first to open up all of the new features. On my first trip out with the SA, with my Nikon D610 and a 20mm 1.8 prime lens, I first got a 5 minute exp at iso 400 with no trailing, so I attempted a 10 minute exp at iso 200, perfect, no streaking and barely any noise, absolute joy to use, and I'm an amateur.

hi helppppp. just ook some time lapse photos just to give it a try out all firing ok no probs wonderfull...ended up with card filled but cant open file s properties says IMG_1054 FastStone CR2 File (.CR2) H:\DCIM\100CANON 13.7 MB (14,408,390 bytes) i used 2 different sd cards this one i took raw and jpg same on both cards ?? colin
I have a leveling base and a 3 way pan and tilt head. Could I just mount the tracker on that, although precise alignment would be more challenging. It would save me the cost of the wedge and be a lot easier going from astro tripod to photo tripod.
Great video! Which lens did u use to capture Galaxies? And how long was a single exposure?
I'm sold! Thank You
which other tracking mounts of this calibre have you tried? I'm torn between iOptron skytracker or this.
Hello. I would appreciate a software/tools install video for the star adv.
I have a fujifilm xt-10 and a canon 6d. am thinking of getting the skywatch tracker to go into deep astro but i want to use the fujifilm rather than the 6d since i use it for night photography and i dont want to use its shutter life. Am trying to see if the xt10 is good for deep astro but i havent been able to get much info. you got any idea about it? Thank you!!

XT-10 is a good camera for AP but to get the best out of it, you will need a fast, quality lens and/or scope
Hey man, great little review. I also have this guy and I'm learning bits about it every time I use it. Its hard to find certain tutorials about the functions, one thing I'm confused about is the tracking of the moon, now do you align the sky watcher with the dead centre of the moon? Also if I was to take a long exposure of the milky way with a midground object, would the best way to do this be a 2 shot composite, midground first then long exposure second and stack them in PS? any suggestions If anyone reading this knows of any good material on the web I can look at for learning more about getting the most from this thing please let me know :) Thanks again The cons I noticed also are: 1) The reticle (red dot) piece has just a thread for the battery being on or off, it should have the brightness dial with a click off setting 2) Alignment with polaris is a bit tricky because as you tighten it up you find it pulls down and across slightly so you have to guess somewhat with the offset. 3) A payload measurement scale on the weighted slider would help you to know roughly where to adjust the weight to when balancing it, especially in the dark ;) 4) Along with your complaint about cheap plastic parts, it would be handy to have these attached by a piece of nylon cord or something so you don't drop them... again in the dark :( The pros: 1) Fine tuning handles 2) Weight and size (easily backpackable) 3) The increase in exposure time due to its accurate motor mechanism 4) Its versatility
Hello. what tripod were you using?
Hi How do you set it up to track the sun, I know you turn dial to solar , but you cant do a Polaris alignment? Please forgive what might seem to others a silly question.

You have to do your alignment early in the morning.
So I recently purchased a Canon T7i and I have a Celestron 70az I believe refractor scope...which mount would I want to go with..family man with 3 kids living here and I work in a pizza joint...so budget is key and preferably something with tracking as I have one eye due to glaucoma..but I really love Astrophotography and really want to pursue doing it as a hobby. Just subscribed to your channel today and I enjoy it :) Keep up the good work...Your not Canadian and live in Fredericton area perchance...the background looks like Fredericton trails and trees
Thank you. Very very helpful
Nice review, thanks ! What software did you refer to, when aligning to Polaris ?? You need a polar scope ?
Have you found the panoramic function?
Can you tell me what tripod you are using. Thanks
You didn't properly polar align it or didn't properly balanced it. I've managed to track for 6 minutes @ 400mm, unguided.

The one with three legs.
It is a great unit, but I wish Skywatcher sold it as a unit with the dec bracket, counterweight and bar and the wedge as a complete package.

David Culp They do! It's called the Photo Bundle or something like that.
what is the difference between this and this "Orion SkyView Pro Equatorial GoTo Telescope Mount"
@gpdude22
4 жыл бұрын
This is not a GoTo mount.
There are no professionals, you yes ether a beginner, or advanced there is no intermediate, no amateur, you never stop learning you are in practice !
what tripod do u use?
Erect your tripod, get out out your level and make sure it's ok, then fit the wedge and tighten it down facing North with a compass. There is no space for a big level on the wedge, hence the little bubble. If you forgot to set it up with a compass and you've installed the Star Adventurer the right hand side of the body is ok to test it on, any other side affects the compass. If that red light does your head in a normal single led red light key fob will do, stick it by the hole you only need reflected light down the tube. You only need two opposing axis to pick any spot in the sky, there is no need of a ball joint really. Now the sky is full of many low orbit boxes and every photo can be ruined and nobody was asked.
What is the the counterweight?
What about auto guiding with this?
Ughhhh!!!! More stuff that I want to buy!
Great Video and review ! And visit your local Astronomy Public Star Party that are about once a month in the summer. Then you can see a lot of different telescopes. Was at a astronomy talk at a brewpub Monday night 20 March 2017 and one of the speakers was a Marian ! I could tell because she had two antenna on her head (an astro physist from Manchester univ.). tjl

This seems pretty light unit to carry around
is it using lenses?
always pays off to read instructions.

I did, but still didn't take note of everything until I really started using the unit.
What tripod are you using?
I don't think this has been asked: Where do you aim (in place of Polaris) in the southern hemisphere?

I wondered if it had baderies.
Just heat the clasp and move them out a little to tighten the fit.
Drill a small hole in the cap and tie a thin string to the body with some length ..no loss
Can you put a telescope on it ..
Another Con = dude in the video on speed mode. Calm down, dude 😂😂

please, talk as fast as you can. Im still able to understand what are you saying
less BS and more info.
What is up with all your FCC crap? Lool This has nothing to do with FCC so why even mention it or caption it? Your reviewing a product. Plus I seriously doubt you're part of the TCB program or you're required to register that you're testing this product. :) Lmao
Sorry but this review is very much amateurish and you need to know your mount well before reviewing. This one comes in many packages like Astro, Photo, Pro . For Astro Photography especially tracking and LE photos everyone knows that an equatorial wedge is a must. Also it is not Altitude setting, rather Latitude setting for the place you live or using this mount. Advise you read up and do your homework
Wasting time nothing informational
