What you have there my friend, are speed brakes. You need to stop around 45/50 degrees for full flaps.

90 degrees of flap is basically an air brake

I have my flaps take 4 seconds to fully deploy on my apm, nice gradual change, those drop so fast!

Flaps/slats are used to create high lift at low speeds. This is essentially a speed-brake.

I had trouble with the latest V1.2.58 of Mission Planner, so I am back with 1.2.55 on one computer and 1.2.48 on another. Have tried old firmwares - no change. Seriously doing my head in!!!

It works fine - although it depends on the wind and my approach speed. I can dial in as much or as little as I want with a pot on the tx. Under some conditions the full deployment results in too much braking and loss of lift. I am refining how I use them.

Hi Prop Gator, I am having nothing but trouble with the HKPilot Mega and the Mission Planner firmwares for ArduPilot. I have 2 brand new HKPilot Mega boards. They work fine with ArduCopter installed, but as soon as I chuck the ArduPilot V2.75 at it the boards go haywire. They fail terminal commands, there is no live data feed on the Flight Data tab of Mission Planner. How did you get yours setup?? Via Mission Planner? And what version of MP and which firmware?

This is sick! what kind VTx and antennas are you using? i want to make a nice FPV setup like this. and is that black antenna i see out the left side for the planes receiver? let me know if you can. THanks!!

No I don't. I've thought about it. I have a GoPro on the nose with the flight cam, but I find the tail cam more interesting. Of course that may be because I am still working tuning the plane and Ardupilot. The tail view is useful for that. For FPV, I would be worried that the tail cam's view of the landing area might become obscured by the plane in the foreground. It depends on how clear your landing area is I guess.

what version is this? a 1680 v what i have a 1680 v6 from hobbyking and it doesnt have flaps cutout and the ailerons are like in the middle of the wing maby even a little closer to the main body. seems a little close in but yeah. i dont think there would be a way to efficiently add flaps that would do anything on the one i have.

Hi. The one in the video is an actual 1680 V6 from 2013. Unfortunately, it's not made anymore but vendors (and even the manufacturer) deceptively still refer to the new ones as 1680 V6. The wings are not the same - as you know. The inboard ailerons are not very effective. There's a guy on the RCGroups 1680 thread that modified your wing for outboard ailerons and used the originals as flaps.

yeah i just got mine up in the air today, sligtly windy not much tho. and had hardly any aileron controll. do you have a link to the forum? i cannot find it. i have to do this if i want to fly it anymore.

Here's the link. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=37138973&postcount=19540 The guy actually has a carbon tail version, but it's the same wing as yours. He doesn't detail how he did it, but I imagine it's pretty straight forward. With or without the mod, you'll want to either coordinate your turns with manual rudder input or employ a mix. I found it had strong adverse yaw with aileron only. Aileron differential will also help.

Regarding the comments on the fast flap deployment, yes, it's too fast. Slow flap deployment worked fine when controlled by by the tx (eR9x), but when I passed it through APM, it would just be on/off. (I could still change the amount of deflection with a pot.) I never bothered to figure it out before an APM glitch killed the SW. R.I.P.

Sorry to hear that the SW went down. This is moot now, but for the next model, flap signal can be passed directly from Rx to flap servo, never going through the APM board. This way the flap speed programmed int the Tx will be maintained.

I think 90 degree flap is too big. Maybe you can reduce some.

  • @elmosan

Maybe set a delay and slow the flaps deployment, to soften the ballooning. Your flaps seem to pop right out! Just saying.....

@James: unfortunately, Google is stupid and has broken KZread comments/replies. (morons) Anyway, regarding your issues... I assume you have followed the Arduplane (APM Plane now) instructions (?) plane.ardupilot.com/wiki/arduplane-setup/ That's all I did. I didn't have Arducopter installed prior, but I would hope that's not the issue. Sorry, I may not be of much use. Have you poked around DIYDrones?
