You'd be surprise how close archers actually shot at people in the middle ages. In fact it was common practice to have your infantry occupy the enemy infantry while your archers move around the sides to get flanking shots, or shoot from above if they have the terrain advantage.

lol why couldn't the battles have actually been like this between the stormcloaks and the imperials. I know they were limited by hardware then. Hopefully in elder scrolls 6 they will have bigger battles.

Not only bigger battles but better combat I'm pretty sure that'll make it even more interesting combat in es is lifeless and floaty , if combat was similar to mount and blade then I wouldn't stop playing es6 for decades

One Dragonborn vs 1000 Imperials and 1000 Stormcloaks

Now this is a battle during a civil war, this is what the base game should have had. The most you see with out mods or the console is a "siege" with only like 30 people to fight.

The original skyrim couldnt have more then 10 npcs fighting at the same time cause it missed multi-threading ( i guess ) thats on of the things fixed but pretty unnoticed

Scentlesskhan96 Maybe this IS part of the Battle for Whiterun, but the Dragonborn was a elite fighter, so he was sent directly to the unit that goes into the city, while the rest fights outside. If you've played the beginning of The Witcher 2, you'll know what I mean.

Yeah I know. So did the Vikings to an extent. Would've been nice to see them fight in heavy armor.Did not expect the Stormcloaks to win with the type of armor they had on.They probably won cause some had two-handed which most likely turned the tide but that's what a lot of Vikings fought with. Kinda hard to tell who'd win

Israel Bolet Vikings usually didn't wear metal armor they wore leather caps or were bare headed in battles and wore studded leather chest pieces and mostly used small axes, swords, spears and shields rather than huge great swordd

Plus lower-end machines wouldn't have a good time.

This is what the battles should have been when your taking over the cities in the main questline

I remember adding armor mods for the Imperials. They really are underpowdered in the civil war mods

It's a combination of racial skill point attribution and weaponry. Generally, Stormcloaks natural racial bonuses are utilized as Nords have highly increased Light armor and Two-handed. At the same time, Imperials with their troops aren't optimally utilized as their natural racial skill bonuses are Heavy Armor and One-handed...but almost no Imperial troops wear heavy armor so the Stormcloaks actually have higher defense than them due to skill scaling AND offense due to 2-handed weapons being so much more powerful than 1-handed weapons.

yes, while one on one stormcloaks probably one due to high damage, in larger battles imperials attack faster due to their lighter weapons. So they can swarm a stormcloak and stagger them until they die. Also, the Empire has magic users/battlemages so that's a nice advantage in larger battles where fireballs actually hit a lot of enemies instead of one lonely stormcloak.
