I have purchased two Skyjiro in the past year the taka chigai and a sharpened iaito and both do not have the crossed feathers habaki. When I asked Danny (Skyjiro Rep), he said it was because of covid. 🤷♂️

@@Katana-Karlalways thought that crossed feathers habaki is part of the charm of the taka-chigai. Would love to have one ever since PoppyPicker's vids. Congrats btw, nice choices.
11:20 the Brand logo for Skyjiro is two crossed hawk feathers, the crest of the Asano, the 47 Ronin's clan. Not to be confused with the Asano-gumi, a gang with a modified version of the same crest.

My personal recommendation as one who has waited a long time for a skyjiro sword is to buy direct and deal with wait

@@Matthew_Jensen you doing well
What I like about you among other things is the fact that you are honest without being mean if something isn’t up to standard
The music, with this audio balance to your commentary, is a surprisingly (surprising to me) big plus! I really enjoyed this music with this review. The entire presentation had a super peaceful vibe for me, and the way my day was going, I needed that, lol! Really sweet high resolution close up shots by the way :) Great overall production on this one sir.
Thanks for the dedication to shoot the Iaido video in the lovely Minnesota Springtime. Great review, as always.
I personally prefer less ornate fittings. They can have simple or more elaborate lines, but I generally prefer undecorated.

I am not a fan of shooting in -20 but snow is not so bad. When I have time to record, I need to take it snow or shine..
Obviously I like having background music, so I think you know my opinion there! :D
21:19 Very nice suehei, Matt. Right on and thanks for sharing about the sword.

This is a very informative video when I compare it to a higher price sword from Skyjiro I reviewed that was differently hardened, I saw less imperfections in some areas you highlighted and I cut the same materials plus hard bamboo and I found no edge deflection on ha whatsoever. wondering if at a higher price better work is preformed which is understandable and to be noted, simply brilliant review Mat, always appreciated

Skyjiro has posted video of James Williams doing some serious cutting with their Tenku sword series. All filming was done at River of Life Dojo in PA. He has a Nami ryu group there and there is a San Shin Kai Muso Shinden ryu group there. David Golberg is also connected to the dojo.

Great review Matt the shots in the snow look really cool and contrast well with the sword! I like the look of this one though I totally agree about the menuki, they look almost like the really cheap-o plastic tacky gold colored one's that I've seen on very cheap swords.. I'm sure they're actually metal coming from Skyjiro, but I think if they gave the menuki and habaki-seppa , that same blue / blacked color it would flow better and not draw the eye to that one spot.
Would love to see you review the other hanwei raptors, the two you reviewed a while back are the least appealing out of the raptor range👍

I may review another one at some point.
This is the one I bought a few years ago it was very very well made!
It's very interesting seeing the price jump from when the video was recorded to right now. Nice review and while I quite like the style of the sword I'd probably spend the 400 bucks elsewhere first tbh.
Good review. Seems on par with the Skyjiros I own or have handled. Glad they omitted that fake hamon they used to put on that line of katana they carry.
9:33 From the looks of it, the tsuba is a Yagyu mokko sukashi tsuba (Yagyu style, "peach" type, cut-out gaurd). Although, that is more of a general description. There might be a specific name for this style, I'm not entirely sure

Much appreciated, your insights are helpful.
They offer a few models with Sitodome and they glue them securely in place.
Music as long as your voice is pronounced over it, I believe enhanced the video, gives it a more professional feel, draws me to the review more, I prefer it at times. you used to use music in the background on earlier videos, so the short answer YES its 👍 good
For the price looks pretty good. The menuki did look a bit cheap and the habaki fitment wasn't great. I wish you could have tested it properly. Other than durability concerns I like it. I also like the epic snow fall footage. Great review.
I have been very happy with my Skyjiro swords, though I waited almost a year to get my Emperor, it is beautiful

I also waited almost a year for 2 Katanas I ordered. Just received them. Definitely worth the wait!
Very cool thank you for sharing! :-) did you try stopping the edge after it got a little bit moved? Stropping with a leather piece not stopping speech-to-text LOL
Hello Sir, fine review! Why no mention of the reverse menuki position? Does it come that way or did you order it that way?
@Matthew_Jensen
2 жыл бұрын
Came that way.
Looks like a lovely sword for the price. Out of curiosity, will you be reviewing or examining the new(ish) LK Chen Dao offerings that are similar in form to Katanas? (I think the crossbowman’s Dao, or Royal Forest Dao).

I requested some dao examples but nothing is coming at this time. Always happy to check some of that stuff out.
Normally, I'd be happy and entertained to see you put a sample sword through one of your destructive tests, but, in this instance, I'm glad you didn't do that.

Maybe some day they will send me one to smash but I doubt it.
Hi Matthew, I'm curious about what looked like gaps in the top of the habaki and possibly a slightly crooked ha-machi alignment. I'd also like to know more about what appeared to be tiny pits or marks in the face of one side of the kissaki. could you tell me more about these, please? thanks
@Matthew_Jensen
2 жыл бұрын
I have sent the sword back already so hard for me to look again but I did post a bunch of photos to my facebook page that might show more detail. There was a gap on the hamachi area of the habaki that got a bit on the wide side. I don't recall it being crooked as much as just being a bit fat in that spot. (also sent you a screen shot). The bit of rust at the kissaki was not there in the early photos I too, it was likely something that did not get oil after I was practicing with it. I don't recall any pitting but there was a small stain ( I think that one was my fault).
Great Video Mr. Jensen. I have 2 Skyjiro Katanas and love them both. Mine are both customed and definitely worth the money I paid for them. I was wondering if you could do a review of the HuaWei Dotanuki Blade O-Kissaki Choji Hamon Katana T10 Steel (Nami)? Historically used as a Battlefield Blade. Awesome Katana

I would love to but HuaWei blades seem to be a tough find right now. I don't expect a sample anytime soon.
I really like the swords they have available in the $800-$1000 range, but I've seen so many horror stories of dealing with them on forums and reddit that I'm really gunshy about it. Looking closely at Huawei but I hear they have super long lead times right now. If anyone's got other suggestions for a cutter, they're welcome.
Review a Skyjiro iaito
I have a sword I bought on e bay from somewhere in China it's just standard but boy everything is tight tight tight on that thing I've never had a sword so amazing. And I only spent 170 on it and it's just as good as 1 I have for 1300 and less upset if something goes wrong lol
I read on SBG forum that this website is actually fake and that they rip people off like they dont reply to emails and dont send the product -instead they send a bottle of oil, any thoughts on this maybe? also the price is 439 not 389 on the website

Yes. I have no skill at getting it where it needs to be. Getting a rewrap can cost as much as the sword itself.

@@Matthew_Jensen it's more of a personal preference like the no hamon plus the blade appears to be a Damascus which i believe isn't as good as other steels and manly for looks.
"Proprietary" steel? Still makes me laugh.
