Skyfront Drone Flies for More Than 13 Hours
In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew speaks with Dr. Troy Mestler, the CEO of Skyfront about the company’s Perimeter 8 drone. A hybrid-electric multirotor, the aircraft burns gasoline to generate electricity that powers the aircraft motors. Using this approach, the company has established a new world record of more than 13 hours of continuous flight while covering over 205 miles. The Perimeter 8 is capable of carrying large payloads such as powerful LiDAR systems for terrain mapping and modeling, as well as advanced optical cameras for surveillance. Its extended flight time also makes it a good choice for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flight operations.

I guess that maybe I'm too credulous, because I just took their word for it (that, plus the documentary video evidence that it happened). However, having been around a couple of gas-powered drones, I will say that this one was far more refined than any of the other ones I've seen.

Hello where you advise me to purchase a drone that can carry pounds and doesn't have geofencing (no flyzone) restrictions
It's about time a hybrid design showed up on the scene. Been thinking about this for nearly a decade, but (affordable) generation hardware didn't exist. Oh, and FAA. FAA needs to crawl back in a hole and leave us alone.

There have been several examples before -- indeed, I saw one fly with my own eyes at CES in 2019 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2qcudeicq7PeNo.html). However, there is no doubt that this represents a big step forward in terms of refinement. When it comes to the FAA, I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree -- especially with larger, heavier drones (like this one) that could inflict lethal damage on a crewed aircraft it is important that we recognize ourselves as professional aviators and respect other members of the community -- including the FAA.

@@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 with respect, you just keep thinking that the FAA has everyone's best interests at heart. I'll continue to agree to disagree with that tennet. I see more people on YT complaining about the regs or just keeping quiet about them than I do those in support of them. The FAA has a heavy hand wielding an axe when a delicate touch and scalpel would be more than sufficient. They are the specific reason I have not pursued this wonderful hobby beyond an indoor, 1S dimestore quad.

Look up the fusion flight micro gas turbine generator.. 8KW at peak power using a tiny jet engine. Very lightweight.

Is it really a hybrid? I think it's not. There is only one power source, two energy conversions and the output. It doesn't have battery power, then engine power taking turns.

For payload of 17 pounds, only 1 hour of flight time. So the 13 hours is probably without any payload.
