    Have to say, I’m still impressed. I remember my friend at work back in the 80’s had a remote control helicopter an I joked that it would be great if it had a camera and then we was brainstorming what would be amazing innovative additions... like maybe a bomb camera and it dropping small sacks onto a target, for example... then one friend said it would be great if you could shrink a computer and put it into the model and have it fly pre programmed paths... and we all laughed and said that it would never happen. Now we get this and it’s going one better... and this is only the beginning in self driving drones. This is truly the 21st Century.

    This is amazing, you made some pretty difficult test, and for me it worked very very well! The forest was full of obstacles of different size and it followed you since it becomes too hard to understand where the branches was, but until then it makes a really good job, for me is a perfect product

    HOLY MOLY! THAT IS FRIKIN INCREDIBLE! Navigating these environments autonomously and with that kind of grace (within reason) is NOT easy! That's a challenge to do even in FPV with a skilled pilot.

    Manufacturer should add an option where you carry an RF transmitter. The drone locks on to the transmitter and therefore will know how far away you are (a bit like localised GPS but without satellites). So in your example where the drone lost visibility of you (you're going too fast, or transitioning between light and dark areas), I'll pick up on your transmitter beacon and re-establish flight to your proximity, whereby the cameras can once again resume 'follow-me' activity. RF transmitters require just a small button battery and can transmit a signal over 100's of meters (or even kilometers in line-of-sight scenarios).

  • @fredrickdakine

    @fredrickdakine

    Given cell phones already have transmitters, it would probably be easiest to just hone in on a cell phone. I was also thinking, when the drone gets confused, it should retrace the last known path of the user. If it was tracking a user via RF, it might as well transmit the GPS data, and the drone could have a flight path to follow the user's location.

    Overall.. VERY impressive. When I look at this kind of thing my mind tends to apply a variety of other applications in a way to see where other industries would benefit from the state of the art.. currently. I'm also completely unconcerned with things like camera quality or flight duration because these things are all items that are version one limitations and not limitations of the tech as a whole. Great video.. thanks for sharing this. If nothing else, automotive companies that are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in lidar technology should be very .. VERY concerned that a company that has invested far less will surpass them in actual application accuracy.

    The DJI drones will follow either the controller or your phone (whichever is controlling it). The problem is when it cuts corners to follow you and there are objects like tree branches in the way. This one has more sensors to detect such objects and a better algorithm to avoid them.

    I think your underestimating the difficulty behind developing something like this. The drone itself obviously does not cost over 2 thousand to produce. The real cost is in the software, then the overall design(electronics engineering, aerodynamics, etc) and then after everything else the materials. But the algorithms here are extremely complex. To follow seems like such a simple task but current era computer systems like linear binary and predictable. Nature is not predictable and every single tree is a different shape. Anticipation and prediction is a form of Artificial Intelligence which is something we are only beginning to understand. I do hope its get cheaper though, maybe in the near future. Because I wouldn't mind using the tech myself :)

Might be it can help to get pass through narrow places. I don't know how its is programed for calculating the distance i just said what i think. sorry if i am wrong. Overall awesome invention. But still, $2500 would be very steep for this kinda thing. I do think it is feasible tho, with future technology.

    With the addition of a proximity alerting wearable (app or freestanding) I think this would suffice the current range of what most would seek to cover with such a device. This was a wonderful video and review. Thanks, Subbed.

    Honestly, from a darker perspective, that is totally creepy and alarming. Just imagine what a rogue government could do with technology like this. Tracing objects and following people like that? They could use this to track criminals, but imagine if they attached a powerful cutting laser as a weapon? This would be like the film Oblivion or the game Half Life. With technologies like the AI Sophia and Boston Dynamics progress on their humanoid robot and the capabilities of Spot, is the robotic takeover near?
