    @@loganstuffuktv True, regular recordings of the time don't have the video quality. I'd have to get my hands on the originals that were in Sky's studios/uplink facilities, and even then it's likely they've deteriorated by now, if they even still exist.

    SKY channels were routed to Bangalore, India through pirated cable tv. After scrambling, we lost all international channels and needed a set top box to watch foreign channels. Luckily, Our cable office took care of that and we only needed to pay rs. 150 (around 1.5 pounds) per month to watch 150+ channels. But thats a scam, cause most of the channels had poor trash reception, and some were duplicated. I still remember losing tv signal when it was raining, or when there was a power cut in the office- it would piss me off. My family had analog cable tv till 2018, so yeah, I had a lot of memories :) After 2018, there was a digitization policy that required set top box to watch channels, after upgrading, we lost all international channels... and even now they still have not added any :'( i guess they won't add.

    So it took me from 1993 to 2018 to realise why we lost obtaining sky free. We used to accidentally pick it up and yet didn't even have sky. Then suddenly it stopped. We never knew why. We bought sky in late 1993 and saw the new ident and style and had one of those viewing cards. But had always assumed that viewing cards were always needed. So... basically.... sky didn't used to scramble it but then changed in 1st Sept 1993. You little video explains what happened. Thanks mate!

    Sky was under increasing pressure by Hollywood studios and programme distributors to scramble their channels as they weren't happy at their material being available to view freely across Europe from the Astra Satellites. Also UK based broadcasters who joined the BSkyB Multichannels package couldn't allow their programmes to be seen across Europe either. MTV Europe's programme controller William Roedy had always said 'I will never make MTV a subscription channel' but a new programme controller succeeded him before the BSkyB Multichannels package and did. VH1 also appeared that day via Astra 1B channel 22 11.538 GHz V polarisation 7.02 / 7.02 MHz.

    @@anthonyperkins7556 "increasing pressure by Hollywood studios" It's interesting that Super Channel continued to be FTA until 1994 when it became NBC Europe - with American breakfast show transmitted live at 1pm CET, and some drama series in the evening. Also from autumn of 1993 Cartoon Network and TCM came - and it ran FTA for a year or two. So we were not completely cut off from Hollywood tv opium. Then MBC 2 started in 2000s, with Hollywood movies 24/7 - for the next 15 years, until UK's CBS channels were available to whole Europe until 2015. Then Russian free film domains done the job.

    @@oknar1977 But when Astra 2E / 2F and 2G came out, they currently have restricted UK spotbeam and European coverage capacity, i.e. national and commercial UK channels only intended for the United Kingdom can restrict their programmes to the UK with a very limited overspill to North West Europe, and the further south and east you go across Europe on the UK spotbeam channels, they eventually become weaker and non existent, there are odd hotspots where, with ridiculous sized satellite dish antennas, you can just about get anything watchable from them but the national HD versions are even harder to receive due to these using a more robust forward error correction mode and signal rate. Some commercial channels on Astra 2E / 2F, and increasingly 2G, on the Pan European spotbeam are not particularly worried about their programmes being free-to-view on the European continent as well as the UK, because less popular sports coverage, old shows / music videos etc don't attract such high royalty rates, like modern films and programmes with a high commercial value do. CBS's and True's owners Sony, decided, after their channels moved to the Astra 2 satellites from Eurobird 1 which covered the whole of mainland Europe, to restrict their offerings to the UK only so switched to Astra 2's UK spotbeam capacity for their channels.

    @@anthonyperkins7556 Yeah, but for almost 20 years they had beam all over Europe. We could receive all BBC radio stations, and when there were Olympics special BBC sports channels were available FTA. The Horror Channel was available from the first day it appeared in 2003. The started to shrink signal to UK from the summer of 2015

Nowdays, "HTTP/1.1 POST" takes like 50 microseconds, and then same is achieved. Crazy.

    when it first started sky was only 1 channel and that was it, it started in clear and then you could use a card and software from a laptop (ludipippo) and it would decode it... on the other satelites and with the right equipment french and scandinavian channels could be watched too and it was really worth it in the uk to get the receiver to do it and get to see other tv. Its such a pity you cant do it the same now with digital.

    I admit that I was never a proponent of Pay TV - still aren't and never will be. Yet, considering that governments force people to pay licensing fees or taxes (depending on which country you live) for publicly run / state-run television and radio, regardless of whether you even watch or listen to that content, I would generally prefer privately run / commercial / subscription-based television and radio over public / state media, any day. Why? When it comes to Pay TV, at least you can voluntarily decide if you want to subscribe to it or not. The Pay TV providers don't force you to watch their content.

They began closing down the analogue service in either late 1999 or early 2000, by closing down bit by bit until 2001 when they began closing down huge chunks of channels at a time until eventually there was only 3 channels left, Sky One, one of the movie channels and one of the Sky Sports channels. The service was completely closed down in September 2001, but the Astra analogue satellite service continued up until 2012, although with very few English language channels.

    @jacksiin1000 That's not true. BSB came before Sky and was a better system with more channels than sky. Of course, sky bought them out and then filled the air with American shows and low cost crap, paving the way for what we have today. BSB had a lot of home grown stuff, had movie and sports dedicated channels long before sky did (in fact sky only got sports and movies channels after they bought BSB). The dishes for BSB were the size of a dinner plate...Sky's were the size of a truck wheel!

  • @bt542000

    @bt542000

    sky started in 1989 which was 2yrs before BSB, which only lasted for less then 14mths, then bsb merged with sky to become british sky broadcasting and the movie channel and sports channel moved over to the new platform ch18 and ch20 so your wrong on what you said sky had sky movies ch16 on astra 1a and sky also had 2 sports channels on ch1 screensport and ch4 eurosport so again wrong saying sky only got sports after bsb ended. BSB had the squarial and skys dish was 60cm's cause the satellite was further away

    ... Do you know Jesus Christ can set you free from sins and save you from hell today Jesus Christ is the only hope in this world no other gods will lead you to heaven There is no security or hope with out Jesus Christ in this world come and repent of all sins today Today is the day of salvation come to the loving savior Today repent and do not go to hell Come to Jesus Christ today Jesus Christ is only way to heaven Repent and follow him today seek his heart Jesus Christ can fill the emptiness he can fill the void Heaven and hell is real cone to the loving savior today Today is the day of salvation tomorrow might be to late come to the loving savior today Romans 6.23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus
