Skoolie Skylight with Opening Hatch (plus 2nd skylight)

We had already ordered these Skylights for our Skoolie, when Mike looked at me with that impish grin... "I think I can make skylights that open!" This is pretty much how our whole bus-build has happened! Mike hatched a plan to make opening hatches, and got straight to work tearing out the old, and improvising the new. After finishing the first opening hatch, we had used up all the aluminum flashing we had purchased... and decided to simplify by making the second skylight (in our bedroom area) fixed in place, without opening. We ended up adding an additional layer of protection with the Pro Aluminum roofing tape on BOTH skylights. We are thrilled with the results ~ it's kind of cool to have two unique skylights!

P.S. These skylights are also available in clear or smoked, in many sizes! Check your opening size before you purchase; our skylights were about 2 inches too small, so we had to drill new holes to make them work.

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1996 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty.
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry

I always double check your older videos before I start that part of my bus. I am about to add some fans and a skylight to mine. I don't have a metal break and I was trying to measure everything on paper trying to form the flashing with a table, 2x4s and a clamp. You covered all yours with tape anyway. I am thinking about skipping the metal and covering the wood directly with the roofing tape now. It's also funny to go back and see unfinished walls and missing cabinets, now that you're watching TV in your bus and all.

Oops, square corners on a vehicle opening is a stress point and may lead to metal cracking. That is why they make airplane windows with rounded corners. Look up the story of the Comet airplane and how it broke apart in mid flight.

Thanks for the inspirational videos. I love your honesty quirkinesses. I’m a retired Paramedic, do it yourselfer, pilot (current job), photography and more craziness. I’m shopping busses now, planning to buy in the next month. I love travel, adventure and the southwest. I lived in Arizona as a kid. My favorites are Utah and Colorado. I’m still trying to decide on nine window or full length. I’d like a garage, but that limits bedroom options (shrinks the living space). Did you pull the ceiling and add insulation or just stick with stock? Since I’ll have to compensate for all the windows thermal inefficiently anyway (I like all the light), it makes me wonder if pulling down the ceiling is worth the extra time. Do you plan on sharing email in the future? It would be great to visit after my Skoolie is complete. Cheers
