I try to do skip levels meetings, but I also meet with my teams on a monthly basis. Team A monthly sync, Team B monthly sync. It is not a project review meeting; it is more for knowing them and catching any concerns directly. Also, it is helpful to see how every member interacts.

I've found skip levels to be more manageable because by definition, product management teams are smaller than engineering teams so I can still meet with up to 50 people over a quarter. Sounds like you've chosen to meet with folks of greater seniority as a practical way to rightsize the group. Have you considered round-tables as a way to supplement these 1:1 meetings? What do you see as the pros/cons of a roundtable with more folks (but different dynamic) vs. a skip-level with one person?

It's a good question! To be honest, I've never done structured roundtables. I've toyed with the idea of having, say, weekly lunches with subsets of the team (either per team or randomly) just to make sure I get to see everyone, but haven't made the jump. Most recently because of COVID - even though I suspect that only makes it more valuable. When we did them as a leads team meeting a team once a week, I found them very useful. You lose some of the intimacy but gain scale.
