Skinny Fat Bike Build, Part 5: The Reveal!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this multi-part series, Park Tool's own Calvin and Ben have built a skinny wheelset for Calvin's fat bike. In this episode, we finally see the wheels in action, as Calvin takes his bike for a spin, and talks with Ben about the pros and cons he's found after putting on some miles.

    Use all that width and do a dual rim setup on 1 hub...

    so get like a 32 spoke hub and use 2 16 spoke rims or do you try to hunt down a 40 or 48 spoke hub for a fat tire so you can use two 20 or 24 spoke rims? I can't see any benefits of doing that though. and why not just glue 2 tubulars next to each other onto the fat rim?

    Love these guys! Thank you for showing us what CAN BE DONE. No matter how difficult. I wish that manufacturers would come up with solutions/options for those of us who can only have one bike (RV, apt living, storage space limitations, etc) and have a second wheel-set on the ready to be swapped out. Because why use your fat tire/mountain bike tire in the City Streets or on any other pavement? In the long term, it is much better, easier, lighter, faster and MTB tire-saver way of riding if you have another (as similar as possible - cassette, etc) wheelset for the Street on the Ready.

    One of the best videos I have seen on youtube - I just bought a Salsa Beargrease with 27.5 X3.8 wheels that I was going to convert to 29er wheels for summer touring. Your video let me know that I am not insane (At least this idea is not insane) The frame is truly amazing - but one thing I have to look at also is the gearing because the thiner wheels will not work with the 28 tooth and I will have to up it to at least a 34- Once again this was a wonderful video.

    Hello there Calvin, Ben! Just a question, Do you have any issues with sram brakes with shimano rotors setup (or vice versa) as you have on your skinny fat bike?

  • @parktool

    @parktool

    6 жыл бұрын

    No issue. Rotor thickness is a standard across brands. However some rotor use a "spider" system for arms, which can vary in height and thickness. These can interfere between brands, but a flat rotor works across the board.

    I want those rims+tyres+hubs on my 29+ except the rims & tyres should be 32"... And if that cuts the weight with 8 pound it will only weigh 9,5 kg which would be wicked bc the susp. fork weighs about 2 kg alone. Switch it too a rigid carbon fork and you're at 8,2 kg.

    Dish soap and a bike degreaser for the chain, cogs, etc. Spend the rest on new cables and housings. I just dug out a nasty 15yo trek mountain bike and did the same thing. Rides great now that it's all adjusted.

    I did the same thing. Also specialized did something simular a while back. 24 rear 26 front. My reasons were: I had a fox fork that got stiction. Fox dont service forks 5 years old or older. A 1 1/8th straight steerer fork with 160mm of travel to fit a 26 inch QR wheel was next to impossible to find or way over priced compared to the 650b equals. A 140mm 27.5 fork thru axle was an easy find, and allowed a similar ride height. Since I was gonna have to buy a new front wheel either way, I might was well make it so i can use the wheel on a newer bike later. I like to keep 2 wheel sets.
