I only clicked on this link because of Naseerudin Shah. And, I cannot believe this is what you did to the original story! Manto courageously addressed the stereotypes associated with fair skinned. The story skillfully under lines the fact that values, which we regard very highly as Indians are not just owned by us. Emotions of love, loyalty, sacrifice is universal, no matter what culture we belong to or language we speak. Also, another beautiful aspect of the story is that, there is no negative character in it. Each of the character has her/her own understanding of commitment, including the father himself. They were all correct in holding their positions. Keeping in mind, the era in which story was written ( in the backdrop of partition riots) i think it was a very balanced representation of communities involved, as well. The twist in end, was gruesome, but it was needed to show the sacrifice that supersedes all or else the story would have been lame and too predictable. The skill of writing short stories require unpredictability factor- a little hook at the end, which keeps reader guessing. As far as acting goes, boy have very inexpressive eyes and thats my only issue. For rest, they all did the decent job. The real winner though is story. Amazing work by Manto. Good short story

Disaster this one. Where were your brains while making it? How did the actors agree on working such a lame, unempathetic script. Life is not an Ekta Kapoor soap opera where a women would keep making sacrifices let alone this extreme. Are you trying to imply a white girl can easily do it? Death is better option then making yr loved one experience such a hell alive. How come that guy and his future wife din't save her? Why are you implying that rape is better than death through this video? Isn't it required to educate more people that it is not something this ordinary? Is it because of meagre penalty for it in India that you guys feel it was ok to show that? Both women look like they are at mercy of that guy and have no self respect what so ever. Conception to conclusion shows how disrespectful creative team is towards women's sentiments. Please do some research next time!

Well... not everyone is expected to digest manto.. In the story he reflects on how hypocritical Indian men are/were. While it is common for a "cultured indian man" to have a perception of a western women as he describes violet after his hurt ego. The irony though is that she is the one that makes the grand humanist sacrifice to save his and his "family's" Honor. Every detail of the story is critical of Indian male hypocrisy.... Exists still seventy years later...

The story shows male hypocrisy but doesn't show anything great about the two women either. None of the women have any dignity/self respect. To be precise I don't think audience can relate to it.

Despite being set in early India; story lacks basic human instinct of "Fight or Flight". The male character is a hypocrite. Few get the chance to die with honor and he never even tried to save his one true love. Is this about the same India where till this day Honor killings are common place? Also sexier white female will not necessarily mean all four Goons will run after her. Fight or flight always or you all will surely die in a riot.

Shocked at the ending. Unbelievable that Naseer Saab took on this script!

Moanto's story was very deep indeed .. This story just rubes the surface of the original..

How can girls or women love this film! A man who doesn't trust his true love, can easily be dwindled and finally doesn't have courage to fight for it! That too at expense of women! Very politically incorrect story for today's time!

Shivanya Singh Taking all creative freedom of the story teller into consideration, I'm not asking about the setting or the flow or even the relevance of the facts to the selected story period. I'm simply questioning the motivation behind selecting such a mentality of protagonist. But I agree that the story can be taken in two ways. One of them is of great sacrifice, other is of equivalent cowardice and ego. Somehow I can't get past the second angle.

It was a very touching short film ....surprised by the large number of negative comments...all the actors did a great job ...male and female lead also did their parts so well ...some dark truths behind castes and their consequences have been highlighted so well ...

This is philosophy. The first short story that actually resonates with the role of short stories in society. Short stories used to be typical in that they left raw, open ended questions prima facie and this is one of the few stories that does so. I am shocked to see such a reaction among the viewers. This makes me realise that providing structural advantage to a gender is inherent not only in law, but also among the masses. Heightens respect for philosophers and shows how diluted and short sighted is today's vision. Makes me realise that "the mob" is eternal in its being.

Rather disappointed! A bit worrying that these sorts of films are still made today... this made no sense at all!

Good work by violet, the story shows intense love of violet for her lover and it shows the limits to which one can go to save her/his lover (from violet's side), but at the same place it do not shows the same feeling from boys side. He easily fled and left her lover to be raped or even killed by those mens. The story was good but it could be better if they had shown the boy fight till death to save his lover, which I think would naturally be anybody's reation, in his place.

Unlike the comments, I did not find this short film bad. Infact, this short film actually made sense to me. It portrays a world which is difficult to understand by the generation today. It's not cliche, the story actually makes sense.

Mr Punkaj Parashar, you ruined the image of a true Indian man. He would have died while rescuing a lady's dignity no matter she might have broken his heart. Woman's dignity come first against all personal hatred. If Param dies in the end after knowing the truth, your film might have been batter...

I am not sure what film maker try to portray. An Indian young man who dont trust his true love, come to any conclusion by trusting anyone he meets and suddenly loves his fiance for her value, culture etc! And finally who dont even have the courage to fight!

Its is based on the riots .. LOVE . Family, sacrifice.. In that time it shown very well. Contrast of values have been shown. White Euopean, INDIAN, ALL have them if LOVE exists. Ending is WELL done, based on situation. Remember those 4 bandits would have been MAny and they only leave you alive with SLaps and kicks and take the girl with them . YOur only aLIVE becasue of a SACRIFICE. Understand the subject, we can not always be the HERO . SOmetime LIFE gives you no options, him or her , she chose him as she had a choice..

Such a waste-forced storytelling, terrible acting(except Mr.Shah) and miserable editing. Wonder what made Naseeruddin Shah even agree to this. Bad one.

According to me this story is trying to convey the loyalty and pure love of violet and trying to show it was all wrong what her lover thought about her just because due to his mentality about western girl , he just thought she was playing with his emotions and now leaving him for someone else. Meanwhile violet too love him so much even his family that's why for the respect of his father she make him hate herself and in end also she sacrifices herself to save her love of life.

Very regressive story! The guy is so shallow you almost find him disgusting. After being rejected by the girlfriend, he shows off his 'loyal' wife (who actually has no substance) to get even with his girlfriend. Even when he sees his girlfriend's sacrifice he is OK to throw her to those vultures. So cliched and uninspiring. I wonder what made Naseeruddin Shah to take up this project!

Women have lots of courage to sacrifice in love 🥺 Master piece 🙏❤ nice Drama build-up and good concept.

One of the Best short films I have seen in a long time. Hollywood standard cinematography, script, acting and finally direction. Congrats to your team and all of you. Bravo!!!

I'm not sure if the story and the plot could be any more contrived (forced)! The very basis of it is flawed. 'An Indian going abroad to study' aisa hota tha... but an English woman coming to India for studies... naah! i don't buy it... And the entire thing with the letters! It's so badly written... Her coming to save him out of nowhere! Again, very contrived. The dialogue seems more for exposition than for taking the narrative forward! The cutting, shot selection and lighting (especially the ECU of Violet in the beginning, couldn't be more forced) has seemingly no justification! And very successfully it took me out of the film! Their acting - deplorable. They are clearly trying too hard... Phir Naseer sahab ki entry and I want to watch the film, just for him. But you give him lines after lines that have information/exposition written all over them... and then at 05:00 the camera jerk! I am out of the film again! Music, too overused, too over-the-top! The transitions between scenes don't work well at all... The production design, especially for the outdoor scenes is shoddy. The costumes don't feel right, neither does the make-up! The film is really bad, period. It's extremely difficult to like any aspect of the film at all...

shwetabh suman :) I'm sure. But we need to put things to context here. We are looking at 1940s. And in the early 20th century, women in Britain itself were not given even educational opportunity/award/recognition. The most prestigious of universities were allowed to limit the number of female students relative to male students. It was only post-1975 that women got equal education opportunity in Britain. Hence, I think, the idea of an English woman coming to India as a student in the 1940s is too contrived. :)

agree with you Rajdeep. That ECU is there probably because they thought of doing the letterboxing later. but it's really awkward. And those slide transitions in between scenes are also so strange, so conspicuous and unreal. And the guy's character is really strange. the patriarchal, disloyal, egocentric.... and yet the film takes on him in a soft light, which is the worse thing about the film.

The ultimate sacrifice. There can't be an example of a greater devotion. The ending really took me by surprise. 😢

Truly appreciable, respect commanded by an individual is derived from the sacrifices of innocent lives, a touching inspirational story reminding that unknown beautiful lives are sacrificed when violence and hatred are encouraged.

Wow the guy had no right to lecture her about loyalty and culture and all that extra though. He also suspended someone else loyalty for 10 long years and then go on and boast about how preeto wait for him for ten years. Other than that, the ending was also pitiful. Preeto dragging him away while violet was on the road half naked. I could never leave a person like that even if it means it’ll cost my life too.

Better end if param get died with vilot in attempt to save her...

Very Nice Story and Deep Love and sacrifice showing in this short movie...Very Emotional

Sincerely i want to understand why the men with knives attacked the actor and why they left him when the British lady spoke, what was it about? Why will they want to kill the actor? Quite confusing

This story made me cry and felt sadness. I never understand why it is big deal for people in South Asia, who cannot take their word back. What they said at the first place.
