Skills in Demand Visa - Pathways to Permanent Residency for ALL Applicants | 7 Day Processing Times

The new Skills in Demand Visa will provide pathways to Permanent Residency for all visa applicants. This visa subclass will replace the current 482 visa program.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Ben Rice - Head of Policy at Tech Council of Australia to discuss the new changes to the Skilled Visa Program.
We discuss:
The implementation of the Skills in Demand Visa and the accompanying streams including the Specialist Skills pathway
The $135,000 salary threshold
Expedited processing times of 7 days
The streamlined Labour Market Testing initiative
Sponsorship Accreditation for Startups
Worker mobility - In particular a 180-day period to find another sponsor while still being able to work.
Implementation timelines

I have a bricklaying certificate from england and looking to try go for a PR, can i apply for this now? I believe i get 65/70 points on the point system. Thinking of doing this instead of trying my luck with a sponsership and working for a company for 3 years

just crossed my 1st year working with my employer under 482 visa, my visa will expire in Aug that means i woudnt be able to reach 2years work under 482, and in that case i wouldnt be able to apply for PR too. what would be the route for PR since 482 is changing again

Hi, thanks for getting in touch! In that case, you would need to apply for an additional 1 year 482 to cross the 2 year mark in order to be eligible for PR through the Subclass 186 Temporary Resident Transition Stream. The new Skills in Demand visa is only set to be implemented by the end of 2024 so right now the focus is still the 482. Even once the new visa is implemented there will still be arrangements in place for 482 visa holders to apply for PR.

Really nice changes but what does it means for who already has a 482?

Thanks for getting in touch! This will not effect current 482 visa holders and traditional PR pathways will still be available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions

Imagine if tomorrow Australia announced that it would cut mining in Australia by more than 50%. Let's remember that the international education sector here is the largest sector of the economy after mining, and there is no need to take resources from the earth, it is basically free money. What the government is doing is making Australia poorer and it will not solve the problem, it will send qualified people who are already here and pay taxes regularly to other countries and only those who are disqualified will stay here who do not pay taxes and do not have a place to return, in other words, a lot of people could become illegal and it will be another problem that will have a huge cost both legally and police-wise. The changes are very drastic and many people are already canceling their plans to come here, and these numbers that the government keeps talking about 500k are not taking into account who is leaving, for example in NSW 250k came but 75k left.
