・・・Lyrics・・・
Seems our journey is now through
All is saved in thanks to you
There was something I should say but
Surely it can wait another day
Since I laid my eyes on you
Skies have been forever blue
Two friends started just as neighbors
That is why to say this will take time
Ever since the day we met a parcel of my mind's lost to you
When you made my name /the same just as / the one you love /then I knew
Maybe to your view I'm just a faintly colored hue that's alright
Even if the only things you say are yes or no I'll see blue sky
So with our final time
Shall I say my line
Pray this time my heart will shine on through
Which finally
In finalty
Isn't true
Since I laid my eyes on you
Skies have been the bluest blue
Now that everything is breaking
Let me say the same thing one more time
How you do and where you been and why you never call, say it all
Long as all the words you say are going straight to me, I'm enthralled
Feelings flowing out across the screen /until the bat'try runs dry
Even if the only things you say are yes or no I'll see blue sky
So with our final time
Shall I change my line
Bare it all and cry and show the truth
To finally
Say finally
I love you
・・・Japanese Translation (By Itoki Hana)

I think there's something implied that most younger gamers don't know about: In older cartridge games, save files were stored in RAM that needed a steady flow of electricity. These games had a battery inside the cartridge to keep the memory running. These batteries last a long time, but not forever. Eventually, the battery will run out of power. When this happens, the cartridge will lose it's ability to hold save data.

As a "younger viewer" I find this interesting but also a bit sad that all the game will forget if you forget about it. I assume that it's no longer like this, so that's good.

@@fygygufyufyyfhchcxgxy4290 Starting with the Game Boy Advance, cartridges didn't need a battery to save data. Apparently Game Boy games had shorter life on thier batteries compared to other systems, while the memory circuit on some NES games for example, were arguably over designed to potentially hold saves for around 70 years.

For those of you didn't see the first Undertale Newsletter, Itoki Hana was one of the first Japanese fans to send letters to Toby Fox when the game was still relatively new. After a few messages and a package later, the two met and have since collaborated together to make several songs, this being one of them. Kinda comes full circle.

One of the saddest parts of this story is that the "battery runs dry", just as the lyrics say, and if you know anything about GameBoy era games, you'd know the game cartridges contain their own batteries to hold save data, and if they die, they lose their save data- but more importantly the ability to save ever again after that without replacing it. This is why the save files reset in the end, and why it mattered so much for her to admit her feelings now. She would never get the chance to do so again. And even if she regained sentience in another file, it would all be deleted the very next day.

I feel terrible. Something strange happens whenever I listen to this masterpiece. All my internals chrun begging me to cry and my head feels pressurised. But no tears fall through - It's truly a lovely song, i want to cry all day thinking about it, but somehow I am just unable to. I haven't felt this emotional in a very very long time. One line I think is overlooked is "feelings flowing out across the screen until the battery runs dry" this not only proves that she is aware that she is in a game, but I believe that she isn't referring to the console battery but the battery that keeps the save intact (yes that was a thing with old cartridge games) and that is why the save is wiped at the end of the video and why her voice went back to what it was at the beginning. I don't nesserly think that when she falls into the darkness it represents going into the dark world, it could represent that that version of her is gone, or at least her memories are

So, I've watched this a couple times now, and first off, great song, it's been stuck in my head since i first played it. But also, i realized that there's actually a pretty deep story for those who couldn't catch on to it, so i thought i'd get into detail: At the very start, we see that the player made it to the end of the game and triggered the end cutscene dialogue. The pink haired girl tells him that "there's something she should say" but doesn't find the courage to say it. At 0:32 it might be tempting to think that what were seeing is a flashback of their journey, but I think what really happened is the player reset the game in slight disappointment that the pink haired girl didn't say what she wanted to, now trying to reach the end again in a strange hope that she'll somehow be able to find confidence and change her dialogue. In the following scenes, we can see that the player asks her to come on a journey with him, and in excitement of her saying yes, he drags her across town and helps her on their way. The girl says something easy to brush off at 1:07, stating that the player named her after "the one he loves," or more specifically, his real life crush. From here we can assume that when the player first started the game, he had the option to name the girl whatever he wanted to, and that's when he chose the name of his crush. The next scenes show more instances where we see the girl is shy and unsure, saying in a conversation that presumably started before the cut that she isn't able to swim, and she also says she's no good at dancing when the player asks her. Then at 1:43, the player reaches the end cutscene for the second time. When the song says "pray this time my heart will shine on through," it becomes evident that in the girls inner thoughts, she, too wants to gain the confidence to say what she wants, she even stutters twice if you pay attention to the text box, which we don't see in the original cutscene. But in the end, she hesitates and can't get it out. At this point, the player gives up and sets the game down, and the girl instantly regrets having not said anything earlier. She tries to stop him from leaving at 2:07, but she's unable to, and can't do anything about it. Years later, the player finds the game in his old stuff and decides to play one more time. But as you've probably read in someone else's comment, old games like this one used to run on a certain battery that lasted a long time, but when depleted can't hold save data anymore, purging the game's world forever. The girl sees the player again, but realizes that the game is breaking and that there isn't much time left. But now, with one more chance, she rushes the player to the end of the game to trigger the cutscene for the third and final time. The girl goes to HIS house instead of waiting for him to go to hers, drags HIM through town, and helps HIM on the journey. She even finds the courage to both swim and dance with him where she couldn't before. And when they reach the end, for the third and final time, she bares it all and cries and shows the truth, and finally, says- finally- "I love you."

"When you made my name /the same just as / the one you love /then I knew" Man, this is such a line. It hit me really hard. When it was common for RPGs to let you name the characters, I'm sure many of us used to name the characters after our friends when we were younger, like, now it's really uncommon cause of VA, but now even when playing those games we let the default names; but those times when you just imagine you and your friends and crush as the videogame characters in games like Earthbound or the early Final Fantasy were just really magical.

"even if the only things you say are yes or no, i see blue skies" This line is also pretty good, in games usually your decisions and things you can say are usually really limited and depend on what the creator(s) decide, either you control a character that speaks and decides things for his own, or having to control the classic silent protagonist, which usually can only say yes or no but makes you feel like you're the character and not a random god controlling someone's body 👁️ She loves the player even if the only things they are able to actually say are yes or no 🗿

Surely it can wait another day..." is very similar to what Paula from Earthbound will say at the end of the game just before she goes home. Paula will say: "Ness, thank you for escorting me home. There was something i wanted to tell you, but I've forgotten it. I'm sure I'll remember by the time I see you again. Well, I guess this is it… Good-bye. Uhhh… So long…"

I see this song as: A character in a video game (the pink girl) is sort of programmed to love the protagonist (the blue guy). Blue really loves this video game and plays it multiple times, until he forgets about it for a while. Years later, he picks it back up-- and it's different then he remembers. Pink's confidence is greater, and it changes the storyline in multiple ways. Instead of having a choice to leave her behind, Pink is the one who drags Blue throughout the rest of the game, going on adventures together. Instead of being afraid to swim, she jumps into the water with him. Their newer adventures strengthen their bond and gives Pink the confidence to finally tell him how she feels.

I looked up to him so much and he always played old-school video games. He got me into them even if he hated that I accidentally overrided his saves on games. I miss him every day and always missed spending time with him and enjoying time with him. I wished I got another chance to really tell him I loved him and just how great of a big brother he was to me. Even if I was never his full-blooded sister, every chance I got to have to be in his company and reciprocate the love he had by sharing games and anime together felt like my skies always turned blue. I'll always miss you Bubby ❤ Thanks for making this life better. I love you.

At the start of the story, the girl is uncertain and shy around the boy she loves. She tags along only at his command and is reluctant to show her true feelings. And just as the story ends, her last moment with him is spent praising his accomplishments, and not him as a person. The screen then dims, and the girl realizes that what she has done is not the ending she wanted. It's too late, and she thinks she will never see him again. But then, a miracle happens. The handheld is put away along with the players' other toys, and the internal battery aging, corrupts the save file, diluting the surroundings. The girl keeps her memories of the boy and knows she has to go for it. So, she leaps through the platforms in an effort to be with him, but.. it fails. The girl falls into a pit, leaving nothing but her wishes at her disposal. So, she prays for another chance, and the game, miraculously, changes the story so she can demonstrate just how much she loves the boy. In this new opportunity, the girl takes every chance she can to enjoy herself, value herself as a person, and be with the one she loves. And, this leads to a much more hopeful and interesting relationship. And when they both experience the same events again, the girl now knows that love isn't about being a part of another person, it's about the other person being a part of you. So, when the final scene plays, she has the willpower to declare her loyalty to the boy. The save file is reset, but she knows that the ending she wanted, happened. As the handheld gives it's last breath, she lives on in spirit.

I love how well this story plays with the differences on the reset. Whether the "game" is literal or a metaphor, it still shows that this love-sick heroine is stuck in a loop with the "protagonist", wanting to tell him she loves him but unable to find either the confidence or strength to. Maybe it's not just her, maybe it is something about their circumstances, maybe it is just the game's script. But she breaks free of that. She goes through the same journey again, taking change into her own hands the whole time. It doesn't matter if it changes her life drastically, it doesn't matter if it's not what she's "supposed" to do, she finally just takes the leap, and confesses her feelings. I think the biggest indicator the whole game setting is at least somewhat metaphorical is the fact that the videos draws a distinction between the game and the real world artistically, with the game being pixelated while the real world is his res, as can be seen when it pans out to show the gameboy. But right at the end of the song, when the girl finally says "I love you", she's suddenly drawn in hi-res art. She's become real, she's made her _feelings_ real. God Omocat's artstyle works so perfectly for this story.

I think it's also meant to be a commentary on games like that. The first time when she says "All is saved in thanks to you", it's very much "you saved the day", but I think the second time around it's got something else to it, where even though the media dies over time, the game isn't gone because you still think about it. Just because your adventure with her ended doesn't mean she's gone. I think this fits with how much it feels like Link's Awakening, where we have a striking image of the protagonist and the female lead looking at the body of water while the female lead wishes to be free using an allusion to a native animal, little stuff like the floating instruments playing a song, it being on the GameBoy even. The game has very heavy themes about the fleeting nature of life and how something can be said to persist even after facing oblivion, which I feel is kind of the message in the video as well. The two seagulls flying off during the intro is also a reference to this, although I don't really feel like going to far into Link's Awakening right now.

I feel like this song's concept may be partially inspired by one of the interviews hosted with Shigasato Itoi about Mother 3, which is the next game in the mother series after Earthbound. Mainly due to this line: "When you made my name the same just as the one you love, then I knew." In the interview, the interviewer and Itoi discuss the power of naming characters after people in your real life, as well as the interesting, unique feelings it sparked in the players who got to see these beloved characters go through the dark trials and tribulations that plague the unfortunate world of Mother 3. It has always been a fascinating concept to me, although I admittedly do not have the strength to name characters in any game after my family myself (except Tomodachi Life and Miitopia, can't go wrong with that!) because we're not the happiest bunch to start out with, and I don't think I'd be able to tank anything bad happening to those family-named characters... unless if I know that the nature of the game is sillier or feel-good in nature. The closest I came to it was when I affectionately named my partner pokemon in PMD: Explorers of Sky after my pet, having zero spoilers story-wise and not anticipating the twists that the narrative would take. I ended up having an emotional crisis at the ending scene because I had gotten so fond of my partner, likely amplified by how I projected my beloved pet onto this adorable lil critter. I was in absolute despair because of these brilliantly written characters and their painfully human reactions, and I didn't even think things through to realize that there was a post-game, so I literally thought that the journey ended there...but I was soon proved wrong! :) Saddest pokemon game I have ever played. I did not see the feels coming. Obviously, the girl in this song is likely talking about the player first naming the girl's character after a girl he crushes on in real life, so it's not quite family, but it's still a loved one, so it shares a similar sentiment to that discussion. Here's the translation of that interview for those interested few! (Edit: Forgot to mention there's spoilers for the plot of Mother 3, whoops) mother3.fobby.net/interview/m3int_06.html

This gives me a big brain moment for something special A young girl finds her love here but she never achieved the ending she wanted and was shut off too quickly, one day the Player (the one holding the game boy) resets his save file and in the process Girl becomes self aware that she’s in a video game, with the new given chance she decides to take this second chance in hand and does her best to make her wishes true and be with the one she truly loves. The Young Girl realizes how much she wanted her own ending when she saw her love and everything she knew break apart at the seams and so she takes things into her own hands with this new given chance and gives herself the ending that she always wanted. Where the game ends where she can finally rest when the game ends where no other story can be told anymore and she is wiped being happy that she did what she achieved to do

The use of the old game console is brilliant here. I love the theme of the battery slowly dying and the world crumbling as memory is lost. The player outside of the game moves on and has an evolving complex experience, but the girl is trapped in a cycle of trying to reach her friend, neighbor that she loves. The player can only reach her through yes and no options and can only watch her lose her memories over again. I'm not religious but I think this is kind of how a god would see humanity. Completely alone in heaven with simple, beautiful creatures appearing, disappearing, but never lasting or remembering. It's melancholic and makes me glad to have other people that aren't just stagnant characters in an old game.

What a beautiful song and video. There really is something incredibly powerful about the idea of a computer program falling in love and being unable to express those feelings because that's not in their script. At least how this song portrays it, it's a very pure idea of romance - they're not looking for validation, they're not trying to destroy things to fulfil their desires. They just love, and whether or not that's requited is alright by them.

After a recent breakup, this song hits me even harder. “Seems our journey is now through” reminds me that we’re over. “2 Friends started just as neighbors” describes how we started and how we met. “Ever since the day we met a parcel of my mind’s lost to you” reminds me of how unconditionally i loved her. How much i thought about her and her wellbeing. “To finally, say finally, i love you.” ….. This is self explanatory. This song hit me like a truck originally, but now it hits me 10 times harder.

I'd like to think this is how the story went along with my analysis of the lyrics and video. I'll have a short summary explaining my interpretation of the story along with an explanation section below on why I think that way. "Short" summary: The story talks about a girl who gains self-consciousness by the end of an rpg game that is being played. Maybe it's because of her will to show her love, but the unthinkable happens, and she's able to think for herself and have a "free will." The game ends up being reset by the player, but the girl manages to maintain her consciousness during it. The player plays through the game again, and the girl falls in love with the hero again. She follows the game's intended sequence but with a mind to experience the journey like a living person. However, during her journey with the hero, she slowly realizes that she is a part of a game thanks to her being already self-conscious at this point. This was likely due to the weird responses the hero would give only being "yes" or "no" alluding to the fact that games during then would not have allowed for complex dialogues. Now realizing her love for not only the hero but the player as well, the two continue their journey, and after defeating the worldly threat and saving the world, their journey soon comes to an end. She wishes to convey her feelings but is hesitant partly due to it being against the games code to stray out of the intended dialogue and her also not being truthful to herself. She ultimately fails to tell the player her feelings, and the game is ended. Her view of the world goes dark as everything disappears once the player shuts the console off. Maybe it's because of her consciousness, but she's left with the regret of not telling her feelings and is left alone. The player, now satisfied from finishing his favorite game twice (or even more) now, decides to move on, and the game is forgotten for a long time. After a long time passes, the player stumbles onto the gameboy and decides to boot it up again, seeing how corrupted and broken the game was due to age, he decides to reset the save file to start again. The girl finally had her chance to spend time with her love after all the years, and she didn't want to lose what's shes built during her journey. Her earnest wishes and struggles manage to change the games code to such that she remembers her memories as the game is reset. This also may have been possible due to how unstable the code was because of the corrupt state of the game. Now, having the powers to change the scripted sequence of the intended game, the girl leads the hero/player in a make shift "new game plus" and does all the things she's wanted to. She knows that this will be their last journey together before everything ceases to work, so she wants to leave no regrets behind. After their final journey comes to an end, she's able to break free away and finally conveys her feelings to the hero/player. Now, having fufilled her wishes, the save file is erased due to the failing state of the game and also as this "new game plus" route was never originally intended to be in the game. It was created from the will and wish from a girl, and now that it was completed, it ceased to exist. The ending credits with the pixelated repeat of lyrics to the start of the song represents the game returning to its "original state" where the girl is back to being generated code spewing scripted dialogue as her memories and conciscousness moved on before the game boy ultimately loses its battery and the system breaks. It is truly a beautiful tragic tale. Now for the in-depth explanation as to why I think this way: First, I believe the lyrics with the pixelated vocals are not the conciscous dialogue of the girl but scripted dialogue. It would make sense that the vocals that are almost 8-bit is tied to actual game as games during that period would only have had that level of audio. In contrast to this, the life like vocals of the majority of the song are the thoughts and emotions of the girl. The lifelike voice strays heavily away from the usual 8-bit voice, showing the "life" in her character, symbolizing her coming to "life." This also means that she first gains consciousness at the start of the song during the intro ending scene of the game where her voice slowly turns from pixelated to life like. This also makes me believe that the original intended ending for the game is the girl thanking the hero for saving the world but not conveying her love from the game devs. This leads to the fact that I believe that the journey we, as the viewers see in the video, isn't actually the first time the player has played the game. During the end scene of the journey before the player shuts the system off, we can clearly see that the sequence of events is slightly different from the intro sequence version of the same scene like the girl not hesitating/sighing. There is also the fact that on the "altered" version of the scene, the girl says "pray this time my heart will shine on through" emphasis on "this time" so clearly she remembers being in this moment as she wants to convey her feelings "this time". However, like the summary states, she fails to do this due to some reason and is left forgotten and alone for years. She clearly seems to be self-conscious on the "first play through," we see as she says many quotes that hint at this. "When you made my name, the same just as the one you love, then I knew Maybe to your view, I'm just a faintly colored hue, that's alright Even if the only things you say are yes or no, " This shows a level of understanding that shows that the girl is aware of her existence and where she is in. Now for the makeshift "new game plus" idea, I paid attention to when the "buggy glitches" would appear during the second half of the video. First, it's obvious that the game hasnt been touched in some time from the pile of junk that is shown behind the game boy. This would have caused some bugs and corruption to the games system. When the player resets a game, you would expect things to be fixed and things to be normal again but you can see that in the second play through of the game, the buggy glitches are still apparent during the journey between the two. This makes me believe that this "new game plus" where different events occur was never intended to be in the game, but only created due to the girl's wishes to do the things she regretted not doing. She was somehow able to use the games corrupted state to change and carve her own story to see as it fits to fulfill her wishes. This further is backed up when the save files are all deleted, and the glitches are not seen in the credits. Showing that once she had finally finished her goals and moved on, the unintended "new game plus" was wiped, and the game was back to its original state. That's why we hear the pixelated vocals in the credits that sing the same intro part as it's just back to reading the scripted dialogue. The things that caused the bugs are no longer present in the game. Once the love is conveyed, the "new game plus" can come to an end, and the save file is gone forever. She knows that this will be their last journey together as the quote "until the battery runs dry" signifies that the battery of the game system is too old to be charged and the girl does everything to do everything she wants to do such as swimming in the ocean and presumably dance with the player. She can finally move on and accept that she and her memories will no longer exist after this. She may have to "bare it all and cry" for the short lived happiness during the time the two spent but that doesn't matter, she may be lost but the player, will remember their journey and her and that is all that matters. That's why she can "show the truth" of her feelings so she can finally, Say finally, "I love you." I couldn't sleep because of this damn beautiful song and had to write an analysis on it. Thank you for reading

This song reminds me of all the wonderful worlds I get to experience playing video games, meeting new people, exploring the world, making my own stories within them... Then... some day, I'm done with it. I move on to a new world, rarely if ever returning to old ones. I have nothing against them, I truly love those worlds. But sad part is you can't stay in them forever, cause there's a limit to what that world can offer. And once you reach that limit, or that end, or what have you, that's it. But even afterward, no mater how much time passes, what memories I have of it remain, the love I have for those worlds will always stay with me.

I'm a very imaginative person, so when things like this come out I tend to see a message that is different than the one being told. When I hear this song, I imagine that everyone around us is their own "video game cartridge". We're all living out life, making decisions, slowly aging & leveling up. Sometimes things happen to those cartridges, they slowly decay or stop working abruptly. Some people don't make it to their fullest potential before their battery runs out, some people wait to say "I love you" until it's too late. When I listen to this song, I think of my own regrets, the things I wish I could've said to people I've lost that I thought I had more time with. A singular message resonates with this entire song for me, and that is to not wait to speak about how you feel to someone. Don't say "surely it can wait another day" like the girl in the video, because you never know what's going to happen in the future. And it's because of this personal message that I can't help but cry every time I listen to this song.

These guys just don’t get it. Kirby was initially produced by Shigesato Itoi as a sequel to Earthbound. When he discovered the limitations that he would have in terms of story, he ditched the project entirely. Masahiro Sakurai took what he had and turned it into Kirby, while Itoi began work on Mother 3. As such, the original Kirby has many references to Earthbound. Nah, I’m kidding. Can someone please tell me what Kirby has to do with Earthbound?

You guys have genuinely made memories and miracles happen. To the creators and the wonderful famdoms supporting them, from the bottom of my heart, thank you 😊 🙏

it's because the ribbon fell into the void. the pink girl's sheer amount of will to confess her love to the hero reset the game once again, but she's extremely possessive now and able to do something out of the game script but the game couldn't hold on for too long because its battery is running low thus making the save corrupted. in the end she able to confess her feelings

This one song captures perfectly that one feeling I have with my relationship, my partner struggles a lot in expressing themselves, all they do sometimes is just say things back and they struggle a lot with showing it through words but i know well that they love me, they have shown me a million times that they do. and even if all the things they say are just little gestures, small actions, or love you too, they make me the happiest person there is, and i know i make them happy too. Sometimes you don't need a billion words to know you are doing things right. You know know that you are.

I don't think a song has ever grown on me so much before, when this released I thought it was okay but recently I've kept coming back to it because parts of it are just so good, especially 0:32 and 2:34, the way the extra instruments and counter melodies come in is just insanely good and catchy. Really like this song.
