Skid Row Homeless Sweeps Make Homelessness Worse

Every week, Los Angeles Police Department and LA Sanitation sweep large areas of Skid Row, displacing homeless people, and often confiscating their belongings, making it harder for people to survive homelessness.
Homeless encampment sweeps are a means to forcibly remove people experiencing homelessness from public spaces under the guise of street cleaning. Homeless sweeps fracture communities and damage physical and mental health. They regularly result in the loss of life-preserving shelter and medication, trauma for those being removed, and tickets, citations, and/or convictions that act as additional barriers to housing stability. These sweeps are conducted by governments with no plan to house or adequately shelter displaced residents and sweeps siphon public funds away from effective, long-term solutions to homelessness.
Taxpayers pay over $70 million each year for the Los Angeles Police Department and LA Sanitation to displace homeless people under the guise of street cleaning. We all want clean streets, yet homeless sweeps only make homelessness worse! The only way to keep streets clean is to solve homelessness; however, LA's politicians continue to invest more in pushing homeless people out of sight than helping them. Homeless sweeps do nothing to help people, and they make homelessness worse.
If you live in Los Angeles, here is a link for the City Council contact information broken down by district. Please reach out to your legislators to demand they stop the sweeps. lacity.gov/directory
Nationally, please support Housing Not Handcuffs housingnothandcuffs.org
We all must advocate for more housing and support services and stop homeless sweeps at the local level. At the same time, we must continue to pressure state and federal legislators. Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will worsen.
Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.

As someone who was once homeless for three years, I realize how lucky I was to have a vehicle during this time. I realized I couldn’t afford housing in Colorado and instead of toughing out another winter in the Rockies with two elderly dogs, I moved back east and was lucky to find a house for us. It’s affordable housing and I feel blessed. I think many of these folks who have a source of income need to move to affordable housing. I had just enough money to make it and I’ll never forget how happy my dogs were. God bless all those struggling in these crazy times.

I've been homeless for 7 years. It's hard. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs, but people think that's why I'm homeless. One day, I woke up and I had no wife, and no savings. All I was left with was debt, an eviction, and my son, who is disabled. I hope one day we'll have a home, but sometimes, I feel my only home will be a coffin.

@@MikeTMike Good afternoon,Mike. I wanted to say that one should know that seniors and disabled people are the fastest growing demographic for becoming homeless, due to both a permanent housing shortage ( and it's not accidental either!)and the high rents that accompany that. There are many homeless people, who do work. It's not simply drug addicts, and drinkers who are in this situation, and as for mentally ill people, they really need to be in a good residential facility, humanely run. They can't take care of themselves. Wherever you are living now, one thing that is needed is to find a caseworker who is able and willing to sign you and your son up for affordable housing. I know it's Labor Day today, but tomorrow is when you should start the process ! You'll be glad you did. If you don't have a storage unit, please get one that's affordable,of course. And that can store all your document, which you'll need for applying for housing. Income letters for the both of you, bank statements. Medical paperwork. It helps to have listed any rental history, and references from where you last rented. HUD is usually the agency for housing, that different housing authorities work with. Most people who are homeless, really hate being in that situation. I know of some people who( foolishly) choose that life. But it's the high rents, and foreclosures that made people homeless. Any fool who claims that only drug addicts, and drinkers, or crazy people are homeless, is either ignorant, or simply bigoted !! If you can find other homeless people who are just like yourself, it will help, as far as being understood goes. There are lots of criminals out there, especially in isolated places. Do be very careful who you let in your lives !! I can't emphasize that enough ! While you are still homeless, two things are important- that is having both gym membership, and storage unit, preferably with electricity. Whatever you can afford. It will make everything easier for you both. Cheap gym membership, like Planet Fitness, or Crunch Fitness, for example. Kudos to you,for shunning substance abuse and alcohol, and being a dedicated Dad !! If you were evicted unjustly, legal aid can expunge that record for you. It sounds like you were ripped off in some way. One must be persistent when it comes to getting housing. Your son is disabled,so you do qualify. It's common to be blocked and turned down, so keep at it, looking into different agencies. Shower at the gym daily,if possible. Appearance does count. And if it's not needed, don't ever volunteer that you're homeless ! Not at the gym, not at the storage facility. You won't be treated well if you tell the wrong people. That goes for any jobs you have. People have gotten fired that way ! I hope you can update everyone who is rooting for you and your son, here and there. Have a good day.

@@kidturbo3451 It's easy people need to create real communities again. Too bad the corporate structure, which is fed by the public school system only to be a farm in which harvests people and creates societies instead that feed off of the chaos in it all. The moment they created the Federal reserve 100 years ago, years later they instituted the compulsory school system. This is when we all became enslaved again by the banking system of which America tried to get away from. They held the president up with a gun to his head (Wilson) and said If you don't institute the IRS to go into debt through the Federal reserve (private organization like federal express or Federal ammunition/not government) they were going to crash the stock market and make all his sponsors lose all their investments. Money destroys everything and it's a system of enslavement and debt. It's why all things suck today The games you play the videos you watch it's all propaganda or a tactic to get you a addicted and subconsciously impressed. That's instead of good worthwhile experiences in which we enjoy our lives and seek better things for each other and us all. After the first dollar is created more than a dollar is owed on its behalf and therefore there's never enough money in existence to ever pay the debt back and if we tried today we would still be in debt and all the whole country, because it magnifies the more money that's created. The compulsory school system breaks the children Spirit like the horse on a farm and put psychological cages in their head, to condition them into this dissociated animal house where in. Corporations are slave plantations by another name. They have farmed all of us out, so that we're all divided and weak. It creates a class system in which people are divided and conditioned into this at a young age, instead of an equal community in which everybody takes care of each other and provides worthwhile lives for us all. Corporations should be illegal of which don't offer equal partnership for all of its members and some shared stake in the endeavor of it all. Community should align there goals towards each other and share equal obligations as well in the scheme of it all. In a community everybody's taking care of everybody has a place everybody has a responsibilities everybody has a home everybody has food and everything they need. In a slave prison system homeless is running rampant and everybody gets a job for some stranger they don't even know who creates an organization that serves only his end and goals and expects all of its members to give up all of theirs in this dead-end pursuit of hell on earth. I could go into detail, but too much for here and I don't want to waste my time on people who won't appreciate it anyway. It's self-evident and not that difficult to see if you look, but to see the truth would demand and obligation from you to do something about it and that's something you likely don't want to do. Maybe you were born into money and are set for life or maybe you weren't and you destined to sell yourself forever just to make ends meet. Either way the system is designed to prevent you from getting up, unless you're already there and in that case it's designed to keep you up above other people for no real reason at all. Except employ the slaves of Be one yourself. Slaves can't build communities, because they have to get jobs and waste their time serving something else that doesn't serve them. Therefore the Masters create communities together and leave everybody out, only to prescribe bosses and managers to Lord over everybody. Whereas in a real community, real leaders live amongst their people and don't expect more at all and make sure everybody's taken care of and all the wealth is spread around. That way everybody's success is tied together and nobody can scam the rest or take advantage of it all, because everybody shares the burden instead of putting that burden on other people who don't even have the means to get a home and living like gods themselves and assuming them beneath them, only for the sake of how many tokens they've won in this casino of life they've turned into monopoly and forced everybody to play. Then all that matters is who owns the law and who works for them...

@Heg Dog Exactly. I get sick and tired of this "gimme gimme, the world/System owes me 'xyz'" mentality that has began to run rampant here in Western society. I'd venture to guess 98% of these people are, as you said, CHOOSING this lifestyle. Because it's easier than getting a job digging a ditch or something that may require them to start from the bottom and work their way up. I see enough homeless in my part of the country and I have absolutely ZERO sympathy when I can see someone on the side of the road with a cardboard sign asking for a handout and they are, quite literally, a 1 minute walk from at least 3 or 4 different establishments BEGGING for workers.

Such a horrible country to choose to harm suffering people repeatedly instead of helping them. There are places in the world (not in the US) where people without places to live can build their own ramshackle dwellings, starting with tents, then move to scrap wood and pieces of metal, and form their own clusters of hand-made homes. They're nothing opulent, they're sometimes beset by crime, but at least the people are allowed to stay and have a place to live and they aren't sadistically attacked by police and people don't come and deliberately and gleefully destroy their only possessions over and over.

I work downtown with the homeless. Most are addicts, they will not get shelter, because most shelters don't allow drugs. We have vouchers for, gas, clothes, furniture, sometimes rent. Most don't want that, they rather have the money. Why? Drugs, that why. Our restrooms, are now closed, our dressing rooms, are closed, needles, and using the floor instead of the toilet. If the majority of the homeless helped themselves, most people would help them. No one will do anything as long as you give hand outs. This is a vicious cycle. We can help them get a home, but someone has to pay an electric bill, maybe a small portion of rent, and again most will not. It interferes with their drug money. The ones I feel most sorry for are the children, to them this is normal because this is all they have know. They will stand in front of you needing food, a place to live with head to toe tattoos, their children with no shoes, no winter accessories, but yet can afford tattoos. It is so sad. So yea, if they can move out the homeless, then I say do it, maybe they need to find another way. And to the ones that think I am wrong, I don't care. My mom and dad divorced in the 70s, my mom had NO child support, three children, lost our home, we stood in the charity line for cheese and can chicken. My dear mom, put us with our grandparents, worked three jobs, slept in her car till she could get us another home and food on the table. It's called guts, sweat and determination. The government is not your keeper..

I see where you are coming from, but the homeless people aren't the people you should be resenting: it's the officials that have failed to implement the means to get them off the streets, healed and into work. Taking issue with their perceived laziness and your personal disgust solves nothing. This is especially true when "able bodied" and young people could just have easily run away from an abusive family, lost their home to another rent increase, or have made the reprehensible, diabolical sin of coming down with an expensive disease. I'm not saying you should restore your empathy for the man berating you and shitting in your garden. What I am saying is people change when they are left with no option but to eat trash as they slave away to get back on their feet, if they still have that hope. What I am saying is you COULD try to tell apart the homeless man that stole from you because they get a sick thrill and the one that didn't want to die clutching their stomach. You COULD try and tell apart the "able bodied 20-40 yr old" woman homeless woman that was lazy and the one who happened to get raped by the wrong uncle, but you would never get anywhere, so just give the help to everyone. What I am saying is you aren't failing to fix homelessness when you lose empathy for the man shitting in your yard, you are failing to fix homelessness when you are complacent in letting governments fail to change the conditions that put more people on the streets and dismantle the infrastructure that gets them back in homes. You can resent them all you want, it doesn't change the fact that you don't end homelessness by somehow infusing vagrants with a can do attitude, or throwing them in prison. You end homelessness by funding the education and healthcare that could prevent thousands of vagrants being created, fund the social programs that give people the means to get back on their feet if they want to. Oh, and if you want less homeless people, you make homes cheap again. Although I bet someone like you would just loooooooooove that.

@@lewiscain-mcaliece1805 You seem like you haven't been educated. People are allowed to resent to the homeless people when they cause trouble to us. You said it yourself how we should be resenting to officials who failed to implement the means to get them off the street, so why are they targeting normal civilians? Target government buildings, public parks, and other "non residential" homes that doesn't belong to an average normal citizen that actually wants to help them. I was homeless for a year and we literally didn't go around shitting on people's home but actually sought out help. Homeless people aren't all lazy but most of the one's you see on the streets either have an addiction or depression. There are TONS of resources, but you have to literally go out of your way to get them. You ran away from an abusive family? Join the military or get a job. I knew people in foster care that ran away and was working at a fast-food restaurant. You lost your home due to a rent increase? Get a better job, the internet is literally full of opportunities. Learn a trade, a new skill, grow instead of staying in the same job for 40 years. You got an expensive disease? These people wouldn't even be on the streets if they had an expensive disease. They'd literally pass away because an expensive disease means constant spending on said medicine. People are literally playing their part by volunteering in charities, donating food, going out of their own way to look after these people and they come to your home and shit on it. These people do not have to help them out at all, nor should they even on their own will. It's their life, their money, their hard work. When they go out every weekend to volunteer, they're doing it because they want to be part of a small change, regardless of how small that is. I agree with your points of making healthcare accessible and having social programs to help them get back on their feet. We don't need cheaper homes, we need to build more homes for these people because affordable homes will only cause a more competitive real estate.
