I'd love to see strong US ski jumpers, this discipline needs renaissance of popularity abroad the Europe. I say it as a Pole that can enjoy good disposition of representatives, but they compete with only 5 other ski jumpers instead of 10 like it was earlier :(

I was there the first year it opened.. helped groom the hill for the skiers, Greg Swore was the first jumper off the hill, but the weekend belonged to Adrian Watt.. If you want to be a ski jumper, you start at a very young age and keep at it till you are an adult and by then.. the ski flying hills are no problem.. I personally believe Adrian Watt was the best ski jumper the US has ever produced..

The last event here at Copper Peak was held in 1994. So I assume this video was from that time (perhaps there was a small exhibition after that). If anyone knows the date of this footage, please share.

This video was proably made early in the 1990's. Today the record is 831.5 feet Back then, Planica were the largest hill. Today, that merit is shared between Planica and Vikersund (both classified as HS 240 hills)

2:30 Wrong! They accelerate all the way reaching quite a high speed at landing. Ski jumpers can reach 130 km/h at Planica event (99-107 km/h at take-off). Such speed and energy can harm a body - legs, so they don't allow women on anything over 120m anymore due to women having about 30% more fragile body compared to men. Lot of women had legs broken in around 2010-2013 (not sure when i was when they put a ban) and they just don't allow those long jumps anymore.

+Sssaga Benches I would not say wrong exactly. You have to consider that the ski jumping/ski flying technique was quite different back then. The flight position was not nearly as agressive as today, therefore I would agree with the commentator that in the first phase of the flight the did lose some speed. The ski flying technique now is incomperable to the one in the video above. Peter Prevc rules the skies nowadays and maybe we will see a new WR in Planica in less than a month. Can wait! Cheers!

Because of surface area. If you flattened your hand out and put it outside a window of a car, you will feel pressure. The same thing happens for ski fliers, the pressure slows them down.

@@cateyesaircraft5619 No we do not slow down. Or should I say the best definitely do not slow down but, as stated above, land with around 130km/h. The surface area ia slowing you down a bit but you trade altitude for velocity (the the landing is at around 32 degreea relative to flat terrain and around 2,5 degreea relative to the hill).
