I just (3weeks ago) bought a second hand eGolf in Germany (Wolfsburg actually). It's a brilliant car. Yes the range is not ideal. But it's for travelling around the city, to and from work (I live just outside the city), doing the grocery run, running errands. And I love the car. It's so good. I'm really sad they discontinued it. Only to bring out very expensive EVs that the Germans also say are too expensive. The ID range? Come on. Far too expensive for what they are.

I don't think I'll ever let my 2017 e-Golf go. It's perfect for urban living and even regional (100-200 mile) trips with the 36kWh battery. Really fun to drive and extremely well-engineered.

@@slk23 You're right - regional trips are also great in the eGolf. I bought a 2020 model, and it was well looked after. VW owned it, then someone bought it from the company, then someone else in Wolfsburg bought it from them. Then I bought it. So it's a bit more than second-hand. But it's had all its inspections and passed the TÜV (roadworthy test that has to be done every x number of years in Germany). It's a lovely car. All the best with your eGolf. And as they say here "Allzeit gute Fahrt".

I have a 2019 eGolf. These cars are rock solid, zero issues whatsoever, drive like a dream, no rattles, great interior quality, batteries seem to last very long, adaptive cruise is perfect, superb LED headlights on a SEL trim... I just checked yesterday and a 3-year old eGolfs with ~23k miles on odometer go for about $20k USD. Which is funny when you realize that they were heavily discounted by VW when new and were eligible for 10k in tax credits. People were buying them new for about $17k USD after all the rebates in 2019.

There is a pedestrian noise but it’s pretty subtle compared to newer cars, it’s not a bad noise actually. The speaker is behind the front passenger side fender, there’s an access panel in the wheel well that can be accessed if you turn the wheel all the way to the left. On mine I disconnected it and wired in a resistor to stop the error message.

Be careful with retrofitting LED Lights. The Lights from the Golf 7.5 won't fit, cause you'll need another fender. The pre facelift Golf 7 came originally with halogen (yours) or xenon headlights. But the European E Golf actually came with LED Headlights ONLY! They where especially designed for the pre facelift E Golf in Europe. You should check them out. But they'll have no side marker.

Regarding the ESC issues, I have a 2007 Audi where one of the wheel speed sensors was intermittent and threw a whole bunch of faults including some related to the steering angle sensor, once the bad wheel sensor was replaced and the steering recalibrated (turn lock-to-lock) followed by a short drive, all the faults went away. Might just be something as simple as that. Looks like a great little project EV. Edit: then again, given the angle needed to keep the car in a straight line, I think there may be a deeper underlying issue 🤣

With the previous owner's cards in the car, that pretty much guarantees either it was towed, and he let it go, OR he may have been arrested on a DUI or accident, and never went back to the car. Odds are there are some pricey surprises--and a battery pack. An ABS module can be a fast $1000. Run the VIN, see if there is an accident listed.

If I had disposable money to throw around on stuff like this, I’d 100% buy this. It’s basically fully depreciated and could be pretty much revived for $1000 and some DIY time (not like new, but good enough to be a cheap runabout). With this thing being a VW, every suspension bushing in this thing will be shredded. That’s why it clunks and wanders so much, typical VW/German car issue. They all do that and have since the 1990s. Tires in the size these old Golfs use are basically the most common 16” tire size ever, so you could put tires on that thing for $200 (not good tires, but tires). The steering angle sensor/Horn not working is a classic sign of the clock spring/spiral cable being broken. It’s common after airbag deployment, they’re kind of a one time use thing for airbags. If there is an ESP fault, it might disable regen.

The eGolf is the most well-rounded of the compliance cars for sure. Don't throw away those seats just yet.. They look identical to same generation Golfs and GTIs, but the frame is actually different because there are battery modules intruding into the (also different) floor pan. I'm also doubtful there's a true measurement of battery degradation available to any scan tool. Best I could get was max energy capacity, but you can back into health percentage from that.

I loved my 2015 eGolf, with its 85 mile range so much that i bought another one after the first lease ended (after 18000 miles). Still had the 85 mile range but that's more than enough for most days, including the 66 mile round trip commute I had at the time. I drive a BMW i3 120 ah now, with a mighty 150 mile range. If VW made an eGolf with ~300 miles I would've gone for that and never bought another car.

If the 12v battery was ever disconnected or dead without having the software adaptations corrected afterwards, it will throw every BS code and refuse to drive correctly. German car BS, but solvable with the right dongle. Paid $13,000 net, brand new, for our 2016. Android auto, heated seats, dual zone climate control, heated windshield, for $13,000! No DC charging on ours but we've put 55,000 miles on it. Great driving car, handles Colorado winter with no issues. I compared it to the Bolt and Leaf at the time, and the Golf was the only one that felt like a real car.

The minimum charging state is what it charges to when charge planning is active. It then always goes to 30% for example when it's set to that and then continues to full charge to the set time of departure (and waits in between depending on how long it estimates the charge to take).

Hi Kyle, You just bought yourself a “Money Pit”. As a VW owner from a teenager. I’m now 68 years old. Last VW I owned was a 2003 Golf GTI. VW’s turned me into a backyard mechanic, that’s the only way anyone can afford any used VW golf. I know these suspension noises and issues. Take it from me, don’t modify it with nylon bushings and lowering it with sport springs and struts. Unless you want a super harsh ride and more knocks, creaking and noises. As they say, “Kiss” (keep it simple stupid). Put all original rubber bushings and struts. And keep the stock wheels with a good set of EV tires. I have bought VW’s with your enthusiasm and paid the price in parts and repairs. My VW Golf GTI was twice as expensive to own and maintain than my 2003 911 Porsche, that car needed allot of repairs. Alyssa’s reaction to this eGolf was the right one, let this one go. It will be a fun car to drive, but it will cost you dearly, and you won’t be able to give it away. Sorry for the bad news. You and Alyssa have a Merry Christmas and happy holidays, keep up the good videos. 👍🏻👍🏻

I have a 2015 Jetta, all steering wheel buttons stopped working (including horn)... the "clock-spring" wire ribbon that transfers power to the steering wheel on my Jetta was replaced by VW recently under "extended warranty" as it was a known problem. Maybe same your horn/steering angle sensor? Your front end collision theory might be a bigger issue but thought I'd share.

Getting SOH without any tools on the eGolf: Charge it full over night on AC. It has 190km of range and displays that the second you unplug it when SOH is 100% so if it says 180km instaed of 190km you know you've got 94.7% SOH It balances the cells even after you've unplugged it, so that's what happened after you have fast charged it. It used some of that precious energy. You basically need to AC charge it for some time after it reached 100% to balance and top up the difference

Did a roadtrip from Netherlands to Switzerland, was a nice drive, because the EU has enough charging infrastructure 🫣

Granted it was a Toyota, but back in the day I had an 07 Prius, and it threw a light for the abs and stability control which caused it lose regen capability. Inside the front brake calipers there was a sensor that counted the teeth on a ring around the drive shaft. There was about 3 or 4 teeth that had worn down likely from the car having a bad wheel bearing that I neglected to fix in a timely manner.

The driver's side floor mat (visible at the very end) is backwards. The squared off end goes toward the seat and attaches to the plug on the floor, which will prevent it from sliding up under the accelerator and catching on it, as it did when you first started your test drive.

21:03 "If It charges I'm buying it" I said the exact same thing when looking at my 2nd Nissan Leaf. Looked over "everything" and then took it to the nearest DC Fast charger. But I hadn't popped the charge ports, assuming it would have both the j-plug and Chademo (like all of the Leafs I had seen previously). Turns out the DC fast charging was optional and that particular one didn't even have the port. Wasted trip. Took it back to the dealer and said, thanks but no thanks. I should have checked the charge ports before taking it out.
