Sketching with construction lines - part 1

Part 1 - Sketching with construction lines helps us to build our design ideas quickly and clearly. This video explains what construction lines are, how to use them in our sketching, and how they improve communication between the designer and the person reading the sketches. This method will help you to become an accomplished designer.

    Incredibly therapeutic and helpful as a designer, stressing through product sketches. It's absolutely paramount to try and stay calm and relaxed when sketching. Your point about not getting bogged down with an idea and not treating it like a perfect artwork is probably the best advice you could give and something I'm still working on. Thanks for the video man!

    My art class just started covering construction lines and I was getting really frustrated because I just couldn't grasp how to "draw" an item into a box. But the way you put it, "just draw a box and keep doing that until you're comfortable with it BEFORE you do the object" made me a lot happier. Like yeah, okay, I can draw a box! Thank you so much for the tutorial, really appreciate it.

    Seeing this video for the who knows amount of time, I'm able to explain what makes construction lines so easy after using them constantly. You use the cube then after draw lines for when you are going to use a final line, To make it stand out and make people notice the lines that were required to make it more easy and understandable of how that person was able to draw it. In this video, You see PDM, Draw a cube first, Then add mostly just 2 light lines then after add confident heavy font lines which were in fact drawn with the product in mind. Very interesting concept, I struggled understanding what made construction lines to fustrating. 😂

    This short video comes to prove, that anyone who wants to become a designer of any kind - industrial designer or an architect or a clothing designer or any designer - they have to be able to have artistic skill .Not only they have to have a talent and artistic skill, but they have to spend sufficient time developing, drawing from nature, taking art classes, and being very diligent with that. Before they even touch a CAD system. Because there is no such a thing as a good industrial designer who cannot draw a perfect line or a perfect 3-D object by hand. This is a note to all young wanna be industrial designers - just remember your schedule tends to be equally good by hand. The computer .With all the wonderful CAD systems is only a tool. Just like the pencil.Any industrial designer, or architect, or fashion designer have to master both tools equally well.

  • @productdesignermaker

    @productdesignermaker

    5 жыл бұрын

    Rahul Devilish Hi, many thanks. I recommend becoming comfortable with a range of tools. Pen, pencil and biro. I use each for my work (and marker pen). I’m using biro a lot in my videos at the moment because there’s no going back/rubbing out. This encourages the designer accept that there will be mistakes on the page, and not to care. A more relaxed approach when designing is really valuable. We shouldn’t care about mistakes, amongst the mistakes will be our really good ideas. Designing is about worry free idea making. It is not about making artwork. I think I’ll make a video to reinforce this! Thanks for the inspiration!

    Is it standard practice to do sketches in 2-point perspective? If so, why 2-point perspective rather than isometric or some other parallel drawing system? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

  • @productdesignermaker

    @productdesignermaker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Erik Binnix Two point perspective and isometric drawing are similar in that they show three sides of the shape. Most designers favour two point perspective because isometric takes more time (if using a ruler, which many do) and is less realistic. We see things in perspective, so sketching in perspective looks more natural. Working quickly as a designer is a good skill to acquire, so working with a ruler is to be avoided in many cases.

    @@productdesignermaker Thank you so much! Im just a student hoping to become an engineer and I wanted to refine my sketching. I have been watching lot of videos and this one was really helpful. I have also been trying to see what types of sketches I should be practicing and I think the answer is all of them :P You also just answered a big question I had specifically in the world of product design. (Side note - really impressive how you respond to every comment, thats super cool from a YT creator)

    I found this very interesting and useful!! Why do you use a biro as I would tend to use a pencil? Are there any benefits?

  • @productdesignermaker

    @productdesignermaker

    5 жыл бұрын

    OTGill ! Thanks Ollie. Biro for a couple of reasons.... it shows up so well on video (graphite bounces the lighting back at the camera without careful positioning). Biro also gives a big range of contrast which helps distinguish between the construction lines and the bolder ones. Also it is good to develop these skills using different tools.... pen, pencil, biro, marker etc. Finally, you can’t rub out biro.... regardless of which medium we use, we want take rubbers/erasers out of the equation.... using biro encourages us to make marks/commit our ideas without being able to fall back on a rubber. The key being that we aren’t trying to be neat or produce an artwork, we are trying to communicate our thoughts and ideas!

    Abdul Ghani the construction lines are like scaffolding that we put up to build a building. They’re like a wire frame. We draw the light construction lines to act like a framework for heavier lines. When we feel we have our construction lines in the right place, we can draw heavier lines. I hope this helps.

    Trouble is that when my videos are any longer, people stop watching. KZread doesn’t promote videos which have low retention rates. No promotion, no audience, no incentive to make videos. It’s a shame but each video takes many hours to produce and when they get such little response, it’s difficult to find the reason to continue. With all that said, I am planning a comeback, after I’ve finished writing, filming and producing a couple of courses.
