It's nice to see how every artist has a unique approach to sketching, seeing him start over multiple times was testiment the phrase "every artist is his own worst critic" :P I would strongly disagree with ever working for a company for free, even if your goal is to gain experience. Also, not every artist needs to go to art school, it all depends on what you're hoping to achieve, if its simply for the degree, then that's fine, but don't stress about it, there's plenty of industry artists who never studied, some would even suggest it's a waste of time! which is true in some respects, it depends though I know I wasted a lot of money in animation school and found my true passion in illustration, it's better to get your foundations in drawing down, practice, learn from artists you admire, go to events if the goal is to meet other artists, this is from a self taught artist.

For clarification, I went to RITSC in Brussels, animation. I had great teachers, but even if the program of the school is not in your interest. Brick and mortar schools are great to surround yourself physically with like minded people. Personally in my opinion it is invaluable to have human contact to practice soft skills. Its not all about technique

Hi, as usual amazing video and art, I am an aspiring illustration and concept artist, with skills in 3d too, but I have clear focus on fantasy illustration, but that's not the point, you mentioned going to art conventions in europe, I am from poland and art schools here are terrible, it is a consensus, so I decided not to go, I would this year. but about conventions, what of them are you talking about? strictly ART conventions have a lot, if not mostly modern art and abstractions or sculptures... you know. Where to find convention for people who like game art, card illustration, fine arts? is it just comic con, and gaming cons, or is there something else? please help.

I wouldn't advise any artist to work on any professional project without pay. Its wise to request reasonable pay for requested work. The only art I do for free is art for myself or as a surprise gift for someone I know and care about. There is extra stress involved when making art for someone requesting it on top of having the skills and setting aside the time to produce said art. Unless its a ground up project with trusted friends and a fair % payout & credit for all involved solely based on the success of the project something like royalties where you work for free up front but get payed later for the time invested, I wouldn't do creative work for free. Too many artists get taken advantage of.

Never never never never offer your services for free, ESPECIALLY to strangers because it sets precedent for other artists, brings the bar lower, and suggests to non-artists that art is something that can be got for cheap or free. If you will be adding your hand to a project without pay, you better be CREDITED as a co-creator and in it at the ground floor as equals with the rest of the team ie; if you aren't payed, nobody's getting payed.

Problem with art schools is that none of them teach you how to draw, the only way to get in, is to be a pre-established artist, and as someone whose art education consisted of 'draw this' and then write an essay about it, and not about how to see form, shape, perspective etc, you can't make that jump up, I want a school to teach me, not to expect me already to be taught. (Also £3000 is not affordable for a lot of people nowadays, and not everyone can afford accomodation/food, working and going to classes can be a lot if you are a sufferer of health conditions like severe chronic fatigue)

You are going to have a hard time if you offer indie companies to work for free. It's also selling yourself short no matter how bad you think you are. It sets a bad precedence where game developers think they can just get the work done for free. And why would they respect you or your work. Unless it's a big company their exposure isn't valuable at all unless you hit the jackpot. You can do it better yourself.
