Thanks so much for showing the hand drawn early work of James Jean, the ones that are published and so rare to find now. James Jean has such fine skill with the figure and make narrative art, art that tells multi-layers of subjective stories.

Thank you so much for sharing (I will be getting his books). My good friend attended SVA and he also became a famous artist. The highlight of the dot.com era assisted great illustrators such as Frenchman, Pete Lardy among others (also studied at SVA). I had the pleasure to hang with these individuals due my close friend who was well known in the industry. I attended SVA night classes but at last, I was no where near the talent of those great individuals.

It's probably just some notes, description of the object you want to draw. I've seen many people doing this before, Cesar Santos for example. You can check the interview with Cesar Santos on Proko's channel. He explained what's the purpose of the writings in his sketchbooks.

I've asked this question many times for these kind of ink and pen work. How the hell do they have it come out so clean, confident and gestural, all at the same time? I can do direct pen on paper, but it never is this clean, or it becomes too rigid. I feel so frustrated. Do they start with one part of the body, say the torso, and then compare that to another part and then draw that? Because when I do these kind of drawings I like to capture the gesture first, then the masses, then likeness. But with direct pen and paper, this way of doing it ends up messy. What am I doing wrong?

You kinda answered your own question when you said confidence. You have to practice to the point where you know anatomy backwards and forwards. You can get to a point where you are confident enough of your knowledge on anatomy that your drawing doesn't look muddied. However, I will say, I am familiar with the type of ballpoint pen he uses, they are called SKB ballpoints (just google it). They have the finest point I have ever used on a ballpoint. You can achieve a really light line if you use light pressure on the pen. I highly recommend.

I started drawing directly on pen 2 years ago. My line quality has improved a lot and I’m more confident, but it’s still not the best. Art takes a long time to master. Pages and pages of book need to he filled.
