This activity explains a simple model of hand showing forehand, arm, muscles and working of the arm.
The activity is simple for any teacher, student and parent to try. The student will get understanding of the working of the arm with a fun filled activity.
Steps for teacher to follow are listed bellow:
1. Use ice-cream sticks, match sticks, rubber bands and pins provided in d-box.
2. Take two ice-cream sticks and fix them the using pins.
3. Pierce another two pins on either side of the first pin. See the Journal page 11 for clarity.
4. We need to fix match-sticks on any one end of the ice-cream stick. They represent the fingers.
5. Keep the ice-cream sticks in a right angle so that the setup looks very similar to an elbow.
6. Fix one rubber band through these three pins.
7. Try to move both ice cream sticks and observe the changes in rubber band.
8. Here ice cream sticks and match sticks represent human bones whereas rubber band acts like a muscle.
9. According to the movements in bones, muscles attached to that bone moves which results in various movements make in our body.
10. For moving any bone, usually a set of muscles work in opposite manner. One set of muscles contract, while the other set extends or elongates. This can be observed in the way rubber bands get extended and contracted in our mode.
