Skate Tracks: first long distance roller ski adventure ever

The last part of our world trip brings us to Scandinavia. This time we travel on roller skis (cross country skiing on wheels). We pull a trailer behind us and start an unknown adventure. There is almost no information on the internet because just few people ever tried to travel this way. We skate from the Netherlands to Sweden, 3.350 kilometers. It's the last part of our four year world trip. The next plan: writing our book!
** Comment on the broken frame: We used an older Powerslide frame for this trip. The company never experienced that a frame broke this way. The reason is probably the excess weight we had in our trailers because we loaded 20 kilograms extra food in the trailers (on top of 45 kilograms). When we hiked the AT, we had to change our new shoes after 1.000+ kilometers. It's normal that our gear wears out, especially when we use it so intensively. Powerslide is very happy that we tested the skates so extensively and will make sure that this is taking into account in the product design. In general we are extremely happy with our contact with Powerslide. They helped us out a couple of times during the trip, and have sent us a new frame so we can continue skating in the future.
We are Zoë and Olivier, together we are WeLeaf. We are travelling around the world on human power since September 2016. We left Amsterdam by bicycle, hitchhiked across the Atlantic Ocean, cycled the Americas, north and south, hiked on the AT, did the complete Northern Forest Canoe Trail and skied for two months in the Quebec winter. You can follow our adventures on KZread and one of our social channels.
We are writing our book at this moment. Interested? Read more about our book on www.weleaf.nl/en/book and subscribe to the registration form forms.gle/7svvZzgxb4vGM5NZ9

Wow, this is the best video I've ever seen on YT! I was literally moved to tears at the end of your journey. What an incredible experience to share with the person you love through some of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen! The camp sites were crazy beautiful, especially the one by the rock at 18:20 and the shelter by the lake where Zoe gave us the tour! I wish I had discovered you guys sooner, I live in North Carolina just off the AT near Sam's Gap and it would have been an honor to meet you both. Thank you for sharing this trip and I look forward to reading your book! Best wishes to you both for a life of love, peace, and happiness. Take care of each other and maybe try knee pads next time! 🙃

Hi Michael! This is one of the most heartwarming comments we have ever received on our videos. Thank you so much! It has been an amazing adventure and the perfect end of our world trip. Sweden and Norway are so beautiful! It's the reason why we stay here and settle :). It would have been really nice to meet you in person! The AT was one of our highlights :). It's such a beautiful trail, completely different than any trail we have in Europe. We would love to come back and do the whole hike :). Thanks for the inspiring words and maybe we will meet somewhere! You're always welcome in Scandianvai!

Good luck to get killed on the road. That is the stupidest thing I ever saw. It is sad in my book. I'd rather roller ski on the bike path every day than to be roadkill.

I was just researching cross-country roller skis and found this video by accident - but I was riveted! Just incredible! What an adventure! What an achievement! I've completed a few challenges myself - 1,000 miles from Lands End To John O'Groats by bicycle, and every triathlon distance up to the half Iron Man (before injury struck!). But this is just beyond imagination to travel 40,000km under your own steam! The sense of achievement must be out of this world! Well done!!

I wish I was young again to do what you did. When I was young, 1963-1970 I did trips like this by bicycle from Brooklyn to Canada, south to Cape Hatteras, up through Cape Cod. Watching you in this beautiful part of the world, safe among friendly people., with stops like that roadside bakery!!! Oh how wonderful. You probably realize that even if you do more wonderful things in your lives, nothing will ever top this trip. Those lakes, those smooth rural roads, camping anywhere. It brings me joy to see you doing this.

Hi Michael!! Thank you so much for these very important words. Sometimes we forget to realize how special our four-year adventure is. While writing our book, we relive our journey :). And you're right, even if we will continue, nothing will top this trip, because nothing is as good as the first time. But we also learned that you're never too old (or too young) to do these adventures. We have seen 80-year-old men hiking the AT or families with 6-year-old children cycling in Colombia. They are our inspiration :)

Groeten Marcel

Your adventure was incredible and totally inspiring, from reading the comments i think the first domino has fallen, because of you both. But what has truly set you apart is the connection you have with the people who have watched the video, and commented on it, your own comments being very humble and genuine, and replying to nearly every one!.....a true human connection that needs applauding. BTW i spent 5 winters in my past in Norway and we pulled sledges while skiing, one metre of rope harness added would have helped with the sideways pull. Fantastic trip and beautifully filmed, well done.

Hi Eamonn! Thanks for this comment. To be honest, it touches us! For us, the connection with people is one of the most important parts of our trip, online and offline. We learned that the true human connection is the most beautiful gift. Without all the people that help us and motivate us, we would have been home for a long time. Thanks! About the rope harness. Can you explain the one meter of rope harness? It don't get it

@@WeLeaf While serving in the Mountain and Arctic Unit initially we skied using telemark skis, skiing the classic method which was fine for a fixed sled and harness, skiing in a straight line, all the kinetic energy was forward. When we started using the skating method we found a fixed harness to be too rigid for the lateral movement of the skis {which then caused a side movement in the sledge}, attaching a metre line of rope from each side, instead of being fixed in, allowed a certain amount of give from that lateral movement and was more comfortable on the operator. Keeping the sledge straighter, with less side movement, especially over longer distances, really helped with the continuous forward movement of said sledge. When watching you it seemed you were too close and too rigidly fixed to your sledge, hence the side wards/lateral movement...... Only an observation.

@@eamonnflanagan4180 Wow the Mountain and Arctic Unit! Zoë would love to do this too! Thanks for the explanation. The harness we use is quite flexible, so it didn't bother us. At least, we got used to it. Maybe we have to try your suggestion and see if it feels more comfortable. Another option is to extend the length of the aluminum bars (they are adjustable). Thanks!
