Great review on subs, they seem good for SPL over SQ. So DDX for SPL, and SVR for SQ/all around sub? Skar seems the perfect choice, they are priced well and perform top notch. Keep up the good work my man.

Both are good just different. X5 is smoother sounding has less punch or slap than the VXF. VXF hits the lows a little better and the X5 needs a lot more power than the VXF. the smart 3 was barely enough power for one Soundstream 5 12" where it was perfect for a vxf.

If I’m not mistaken, I think the guy who helped design the ddx was a former worker for sundown audio and helped design the sub. Which is why it has quality specs about it.

I've heard good things about the DDX sub but haven't had or heard them. I has 2 sdr12s d4s for a year and they were nice entry subs. I upgraded to 2VXF12s d4 and they slam so much harder and lower. Now I'm running 2VXF12 d2 on 2 rp2ks. I am a Skar fan but they don't compete with Sundown Audio. Then again Sundown is over twice the price but Skar is a great budget company so F the haters

Jeesh does everyone always just bring up SA when talking about subs? How much is a SKAR DDX 12"? What? Under 200$? Now remind me how much a 12" SA sub cost please. Its like reviewing an Honda Accord and then saying "well they dont compete with Cadilac or Mercedes but its ok" lol See what I mean? Also, by now, Im sure the name SA has been beaten to death

In my opinion the DDX are loud and the slap hard but not that great. Musical sound quality. I would go with 2 audiopipe 10’s like these amzn.to/3skprmY they slap HARD . Yet sound great. You can even do 1 soundstream. R3 12” in a large ported box and those subs sound killer and are super punchy and accurate. If you go with Skar do a vxf 12” in a large ported box. Of the 3 I mentioned the vxf will hit the lows more but are still punchy. So hard to recommend things because there’s so many options and people have personal preferences but these are the three in a nutshell they’re fairly decently priced that I think you were like if you listen to metal. And all these go ported as long as it’s a decent ported box they will keep their accuracy but you would just get way more impact in my opinion a good sub will sound just as accurate in a ported box now if it’s a slappier, The subwo, it may need to be in sealed to be accurate, but that’s not the case with any of these.

Sorry wrong person. A DDx 10 will be louder than 2 svr 8” most likely. But the DDX are a little peaky. So I would say it depends if you just want loudness and volume or good daily driving sound quality. To SVR 8 inch subs would sound pretty good

  • @HiFiVector

I have found that most all brands TS parameters are not exact is a pretty big variance from what spec say to real world. Some brands are closer than others and some are very far off. I Have even compared three different DATS units at the same time to verify the accuracy in the past just to verify the consistency between DATS units and although there’s a small variance they are pretty consistent. So I really wouldn’t be too hard on SKAR because again it’s most brands.

@@HiFiVector Oh I agree completely. It seems that the companies that do more actual testing of their products (Research & Design) are a bit more consistent. The companies that don't actually make their own subwoofers it can be very inconsistent. Do you agree? Example, Sundown seems to be a bit more consistent to me. Possibly because they are very hands on when it comes to designing their subwoofers and they understand how each part affects the specs and therefore sound of their products. Possibly I am wrong but it seems that way at least.

Yea they are meant to be SPL “ burp” woofers so they sound quality is not that great but they weren’t designed for SQ. They do slap extremely hard and are very loud. But as you said not very musical and very harsh. But a lot of guys like them because they don’t care about sound quality. They are built very well and can take a lot of abuse.
