Modern Icelandic is descended from Old Norse. Modern Iceland can read the old dialect (being Old Norse) with very little difficulty as it has not changed that much since around 09th/10th Centuries. Icelandic is the closest language to Old Norse

@@FlamSparks actually elfdalian could be closer, a minority language in sweden. At least in pronunciation because it retains nasal vowels. In fact some people think that language is the closest to proto-germanic, but boy does it so strange.

The lines from the Völuspá in this song are only two, both from stanza 52. The rest is completely made up, and in fact the rest of the lyrics is in Icelandic, not in Old Norse. The song treats contemporary themes of climate change and migratory flows provoked by environmental conditions and wars.

"jörmun-" is a prefix which, attached before words, indicates that the noun they refer to is "big, great". So, "Jörmungrund" means "wide ground"

I wonder why you didn't used old futhark for the runes.. When writing Old Norse, does it make more sense to use younger futhark ? If yes, why ? Anyway, love your content on SKÁLD's songs !!!

Elder fuþark is a writing system which was used at a very early stage of the language to write not in Old Norse, but in Protonorse, a far more ancient language. Writings left in this Protonorse (and thus in elder fuþark) are very few. When the language evolved from Protonorse to Old Norse, the writing system changed as well, creating younger fuþark. Using younger fuþark is more historically accurate, as it was the alphabet associated with Old Norse. However, in this specific song, I didn't use it for the majority of it, since it's written mostly in contemporary Icelandic, not in Old Norse.

Norwegian can be a starting point (mine was Swedish), but for Icelandic, it won't be enough. For contemporary Icelandic, the government of Iceland made a site where basic teaching is free: icelandiconline.com/ If you want to further your studies in either contemporary or old Icelandic, goes without saying, a university course is your best option without a doubt. There, you're likely to be addressed to quality material and be helped by someone competent.

Hey :) Juste quelques petites corrections pour la traduction Fr ^^ 0:35 "Les enfants dans LES bois" 2:39 "Des poiSSons", sinon c'est encore plus inquiétant ^^ 2:42 "Des baleines au lieu des ours", même au pluriel, un seul S. Ce n'est pas comme en anglais ^^ A moins que les paroles fassent référence à des ours femelles (ourse) et dans ce cas, la phrase est bien traduite :)

Is this based on doggerland? It was a land that was once connecting Britain to the European mainland, but was flooded after the ice age ended due to rising sea levels. most of the lyrics here gives me doggerland vibes I always wonder if certain mythological stories were based from a similar event. Story of Atlantis was probably from another land like Doggerland flooding after the ice age, and the stories remained but the origin forgotten

@@SolarisDreamweaverVT well, they both start by "jörmun-", which means "strong" or "great". So, "Jörmungandr" is the "strong/great monster" and "jörmungrund" is the "great ground". A couple of these lines are taken from the Völuspá, but the rest is in Icelandic and is completely made-up. This song is rather contemporary, talking about migratory flows caused by wars and climatic changes.

"Learning runes" wouldn't really help you understand the meaning of that expression: runes are just an alphabet, it's a language you need to learn to understand it
