RIP Australia was the first country to fall in love with Rodriguez's debut album, 1970's Cold Fact, after it sunk without trace in his homeland. Festival Records pressed up a few copies anyway, one of which was bought on the off-chance by a deejay at radio station 2SM, Holger Brockman. "Australia was my first triumph, but that movie's helped me a lot. It's never too late and it's never too early, man. It sent me global at 70 years of age." " Rodriguez has more than aesthetic reasons to love Australia, which he has visited for the five times. Peace out.

I was surprised that you didn’t do a tribute to the incredible Sinead OConnor. That’s not a criticism. But would appreciate knowing if it was because you had never reacted to her? She was such a powerful force in Ireland and became such an icon as someone who fought against injustice For me, Robbie was the “third shoe” of this round. I have vague memories of that Sugarman documentary. Thank you for honoring him here, Wayne. To me, he represents the many great artists who have talent and desire, but who, due to circumstance (luck? crappy management? A record label who didn’t care?) never break through. You’re a class act, Wayne. But then, we’ve all known that for years now. Peace ✌️🙂

Rodriguez was a tremendous musician. I discovered him just a few years ago myself and felt embarrassed I didn't know who he was. Wayne, always appreciate your tributes. RIP to the Sugarman

Thank you for such a heartfelt reaction Wayne and the shout-out. This hurt, especially having just heard about Robbie Robertson and Sinead O several weeks back now. Your thoughts on his initial lack of success seem spot on. Musically his producers failed; I think the album sounds great but was the wrong treatment for the time, as too many of the songs were backed by pop-sounding orchestral production. Seeing "Searching for Sugarman" that first time just blew me away, what a fond memory and amazing introduction. Hope some folks who got to see him might comment and share their story.

RIP Sugarman. Surprised you aren't online with a Robbie Robertson tribute, one of the most seminal songwriters and musicians of our time. Maybe it's on its way.

"...along with them goes a little bit of the the world's essence." A poignant sentiment and the word/phrase that I may have been trying to find since August 8th...Searching for Sugar Man was one of the most moving documentaries I have ever watched...it was my 1st introduction to Rodriguez (as prob. most of the US) and I quickly purchased the DVD & soundtrack afterwards to share with all of my friends and family, as well as his 1st two albums. I believe that you surmised his early situation perfectly here; he was quite young when the first 2 albums were made, and he already had a wife and one little girl by then (if not two) to provide for, and he just moved on to an 'ordinary life'. Clearly, he was not guided by anyone (with some clout and integrity in the business, anyway) to help him promote, encourage and protect him and his music. I'm sure there's more to the story that we aren't privy to, but I think you hit the nail on the head with your instinct about Rodriguez's early recording circumstances, and the ruthless business that it can be. I was so moved to finally see him perform live at the Granada Theater/Santa Barbara in 2017. It was a magical experience to finally be in the same room with this musical poet. There is just something about Rodriguez in a mystical sort of way, yet he's not intimidating...he just seems to be from another place and time 💫 His eyesight was already quite deteriorated by then, and he needed assistance to get to his spot on stage, but I thought he was amazing that night in every way. He was already 75 yrs old that year. I believe he began to have more serious health issues following this time period, and then of course going into 2020 with the Covid lockdown, he had to stop performing publicly, and who knows how that situation affected his well-being in general. His health became quite fragile over the last 3 years due to at least one stroke, if not two, though it seems he was still in decent spirits. One of his last in-person magazine interviews, with the French magazine La Monde, just around the time of his 80th birthday in 2022, touches on that. I subscribed to the English version for a month just so I could read that one article and print it out! Some of the translation from French to English is a bit odd, but it's a fascinating read and gave some insight of how Rodriguez was faring just a year ago....Wayne, I'm glad I found you and this tribute here tonight. When you posted this on Aug. 10th it happened to be my birthday, and I drove to the beach in the evening and said my goodbyes to Rodriguez as the terracotta sun sunk into the horizon, playing my Cold Fact CD over and over all the way home...I'm sure Rodriquez would have agreed, you're a stand-up, class act!✌Warm Greetings from So. California ~ RIP Rodriguez, you slipped away and the world is a bit dimmer🖤
