I'm glad you have a part of the review talking about what effect lead tape has on the particular paddle. I like what lead tape brings to any paddle. I'm already looking forward to your next review. Another great review, thanks. I appreciate that you incorporated the comparison to the CRBN 1x 16mm. With the wave of new raw carbon paddles out from CRBN, Six Zero, Legacy, Vatic as well as others to follow, it would be great to see some sort of multi-paddle comparison chart that ranks each on a few criteria, especially if it also had a popular category-leader paddle as a baseline. Perhaps something similar to the charts you included in your SLK Halo review write up? Personally, I would love to see those kind of charts for each of the three categories of paddles you reference on your site (control, all-court, power). Lastly, I would love your thoughts on the 14mm versions of the CRBN 1x and the Vatic (only two I know of that have 14mm versions) and how they compete in the power paddle category. I just got the 14mm 1x and although I have only played with it for about 3 days, I do like it so far. It would be helpful to hear your thoughts, especially as someone with more experience and a broader array of comparisons. I also know you have to be selective in your choice of reviews, thanks again!

I’m currently playing with the Ruby and love it, however I’m looking for a paddle that’s a little more head light for more maneuverability at the kitchen (without compromising spin and power). Would you recommend the BD in this case? 8:18

  • @pickleballeffect

Yes, if you like the little extra power the ruby gives you then the BD makes more sense than the DBD and is lighter. It does have a stiffer feel than the Ruby that will take a minute to get used to though.

Thank you for another thorough and well thought out review. Another reviewer commented that he thought because of the way the perimeter carbon strip is fused to the face, it allows for some degree of flex as opposed to a one piece wrap. He also felt that because of that, there seems to be a break in period as the flex seems to increase a little. Is that something you felt too?

  • @pickleballeffect

    @pickleballeffect

    Жыл бұрын

There is definitely a difference in how these played using the carbon strip fuse rather than a 360 degree wrap. I'm not sure if there was a break in period but I certainly got used to the feel and they seemed softer to me overtime but I still thought they maintained the same power as they did out of the box.

Great review. Thanks for putting it out there -- I snagged the 16mm SixZero DBD and can't say enough good things about it. For me, I'm used to adding lead tape to my paddles to create some stability/control but this was the 1st paddle I haven't added any tape to. Pure stock configuration has been great. The spin is top tier (at least for H1'2023), sweet spot is huge, and the slight drop in power over pure power paddles is negligible and I like the handle length + low swing weight of the DBD out-the-box.

What we need, Braydon, and apparently what you are striving for is the ability to compare the four edge foam brands (and evidently they are all made in the same factory in China, though customized by brand): CRBN 1/2X, Legacy Pro, SixZero C/P, and Vatic Pro Flash/V7. For Vatic I am sure you will be getting their “new batch” paddles with a tighter carbon fiber face weave and more compressed polypropylene honeycomb core cells. Good question. I had a hard time deciding if the DBD should be categorized as a control paddle or all-court paddle. It does have more pop than your standard raw carbon but it's not a big jump. I personally prefer the softer feel of standard raw carbons and didn't think the little extra power it gave me was enough to justify its stiffer feel that I wasn't in love with though I could control it just fine. The BD, however, does have the pop to justify the not as soft feel and I thought it's raw fiberglass face was very innovative. I actually liked the BD more but I'm willing to bet more people will take to the DBD rather than the BD.

Hey Braydon, thanks for your review. I currently use a Vulcan V570CF2 and love it. Surprised I don't see anyone playing with it. I'd like to add a similar paddle to my tool bag with a slightly shorter handle and a little more pop. Definitely sticking to raw carbon fiber, so I'm looking at the double black diamond. The website lists the handle at 5.5" (same as my Vulcan), but you say it's 5.3" in this video. I know it's a tiny difference, but that's exactly what I'm looking for since I don't use two-handed backhand, but get a ton of spin and a bit more overhead power from the longer handle. Also, how does the DBD do on drop shots? bc my Vulcan drops are as good as I can get.

The DBD was originally listed as 5.3 but they later made the foam handle inserts longer and then called 5.5. I wouldn’t call it a true 5.5” handle.

@@pickleballeffect got it thanks. After playing today I realized I need more of a power paddle for my second one so I’m looking at CRBN 3X, not sure on 14mm or 16mm. My Vulcan is 16mm. Do you have a favorite power paddle? (5 or 5.3 handle)

Hey Braydon! I’ve read through all the comments on the video and it’s been a little while since someone asked about an update. I ran into a few Reddit users that mentioned the BD has more of a softer feel than the DBD. I am heavily considering the DBD for the added control while still having high spin and lots of power. I’ve seen some of JohnKew’s videos where he shows the fiberglass on the BD playing a big part in the longevity. But the common theme in all the paddle reviews I’ve seen is the DBD is everyone’s favorite. Are you still using the DBD as your primary paddle? If not what’s your current go to? Side note: While I’m waiting on the DBD to get back in stock I picked up a Pro Line Energy paddle by Pickleball Apes. They have one of the longest handles at 6.25 and the face is a mix of Kevlar and carbon fiber. Figured with you being a paddle nerd maybe you’d think about reviewing it sometime. I have mine coming in the mail this week. Excited to test out the new facing material.

I just ordered a new BD so we’ll see if anything has changed but the BD was much firmer and stiff feeling than the DBD when I did this review. The paddle I’ve been falling back on is the Vatic Pro Prism Flash. It’s just a super easy paddle to control and I know I can rely on it when I’ve been reviewing and playing other paddles. When you’re playing with a paddle that has more power you have to adjust to it and dial it in and it’s hard to do that when I’m changing paddles all the time. I haven’t heard if the pro line energy paddle. Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into it.

I haven’t hit a 14mm yet but suspect it’s got a little more pop and better maneuverability at the sacrifice of some stability and forgiveness. I have an order coming of the DBDs that’s supposed to arrive in about a week and half.

Hi again, besides the Black Diamond are there any other paddles that have a non carbon fiber face with a good amount of spin you would recommend? I am considering ordering the black diamond but am also interested if there are other paddles that could have longer spin life potential compared to paddles with carbon fiber face. Thank you again.

  • @pickleballeffect

The Selkirk Power Air paddles have good spin without raw carbon fiber, but their stuff wears out too. The only paddle I can think of that has longer spin potential than raw carbon are the Gearbox CX14 paddles. Gearbox uses their core to apply spin and doesn't totally rely on grit so the spin potential lasts longer.

  • @pickleballeffect

You can tell a difference with the handle lengths for sure. The CRBN 1x feels longer and the head looks smaller. I actually really like the 5.3" handle length. There are lots of benefits to a longer handle but 5.5" eats into the paddle face too much for me so I like the slightly shorter handle of the Six Zeros. As for the extended length difference, the CRBN is obviously your standard elongated length but the hybrid length of the Six Zero felt more like a standard shape than an elongated shape to me.
