Six Secrets Of Sustain For Electric Guitar [And Quite A Bit On Feedback Too] - That Pedal Show

Музыка

Sustain is the holy grail for many guitar players. So what it is, how do you get more of it, and why do we care so much? We look at six things you can do…
Life too short for long KZread videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! What about sustain then? Why are we so obsessed with it when it comes to electric guitars? Let’s be honest - most of us are so eager to play the next note that any actual, meaningful sustain is largely pointless isn’t it?
Well, not really. As we discuss and demonstrate, there’s more to sustain than meets the ear. Maybe it’s not just about the length of the sustain. Maybe it’s more about the envelope of the note dynamic; the EQ; the harmonic feedback; the interaction with the speaker… and lots of other cool stuff. We get into all that and more, offering tips and advice on how you might improve your own sustain. Well, your guitar’s sustain anyway.
Enjoy the show!

I have a cheap Tele which had an issue with the neck pocket. It was just a hair wider that the neck. I decided to remove the neck, fill the gap with wood glue and screw it back on. The next day I tried it and I was astounded by the results. Essentially I had a bolt-on + glued-on neck. Not only it sustained much longer, but the frequency responce was broader, with more low mids and more punch. I liked it so much that I did it to my Fender guitars as well, with similar results.

I really enjoy how you guys start at the most basic level and build upon the foundation. A lot of people would either gloss over the basic concept of sustain or fail to get very far past the basic concept. It's great than when you are demoing effects pedals that you get into what the effect actually is and use the pedals to show that instead of just showcasing the pedal.

I have never thought "I wish this guitar had more sustain" it always baffled me when people said it. However, I have always felt that note "bloom" was a better word for it. I never cared for the length of the decay, but its vocal quality (where that low level feedback that you demonstrate here gives it the mojo). Great episode guys, really cool.

I saw Bob Mould do that back in the 80’s. He leaned his Gibson in front of the cab and it fed back for probably 20 minutes during intermission or something. Even then I knew it was a trick because there’s no way that thing could’ve sustained the same note like it did. It was basically a static note that never changed the whole time. Brilliant that you saw Soundgarden. Much respect.

Glad you guys cleared that up. So many videos look at 'sustain' 30 seconds out and determine things like strat necks sustain longer or steel girders sustain longer (Jason Seaborn), or heavy blocks sustain more. But few realize what you want is a loud 'decay' - or the sustain of the first millisecond or second or maybe two. And the more compression, reverb, delay and natural sustain you have, the less overdrive/distortion you need, and the less fizzy your tone.

Once again, an episode of TPS sends me to the place I'd been trying to find. I did play at some pretty serious volume and got a feel for how things were behaving. THEN, I wound my clean preamp up until I could just feel/hear a touch of compression (small combo, but very clean headroom amp). This made the harmonics so much more alive. I have a proper contraption of drives (and this is mostly your fault, fellas!). Before it was over, I backed off all 3 of my strat PU's which I would not have expected. This made for some killer clarity and less low end. Perfect. Now, with the power volume back to a more acceptable level for a house with people living in it, my drives all work together marvelously. Love it, Love it, Love it.

Probably made worse by vocal mic in same loop. Great to have the dynamic duo back! G

It occurs to me that understanding the frequencies at which your different guitars really resonate - like the Les Paul was so lively at D, for example, but the 335 was different - could inform your guitar choice for songs in different keys (assuming you're blessed with such a choice, obviously!) This show came at just the right time for me. Only this week have I been falling in love again with the guitar tones by Keith Scott on Bryan Adams albums. The sustain Keith Scott gets out of his original 1963 strat and the Gretsch for songs like Everything I do, I do it for You on both solos and held chords is just jaw dropping. Such tasty playing. I would love to hear Mick do a version of Please Forgive me by Bryan Adams as I reckon Mick’s voice and strat sounds are similar. No one writes songs with Guitar tones and solos like Bryan Adams and Keith Scott any more.

Great episode, guys! One trick you didn't mention is something you both do (everybody does) quite intuitively is to maintain sustain on a single fretted note by introducing new transients - wobbling the string like a nano bend, not enough to change pitch much. It's especially noticeable when the frets have lost their crowns and the string catches on the ridges. It's a glorious sound. I think SRV was the first player I noticed doing it.

That all sounded great! Glad you brought out the Ed O'Brien Strat. Whatever that TC gizmo was was bizarre. Kind of goes with a show idea I've had. You should do a challenge episode using weird devices to make music such as the Ebow, Gizmotron, power drill a la EVH, ray gun a la Steve Stevens and whatever other weird things you guys can find. Cheers.

Exactly! Quality of interaction is the goal. Note decay quality is a necessary part of musical interaction. All elements in the chain of sound creation and delivery within the artists listening space contribute to inform them of the quality of their contribution in real time. Music creation requires sharing quality time. Is there no musicality without or beyond time?

Great show guys. I remember my first acoustic, my brother in law used to go crazy over how much “sustain” it has. I’d no dammed clue what he was talking about, haha. Still have the guitar, and it is actually pretty good for a sub $500. With my electrics, I find I don’t have too much of an issue getting harmonic feedback in my wee studio, rather, it’s far too easy to get into nasty, screeching, uncontrollable feed back, even with my little amps (bassbreaker 15c, katana 100 2x12c, and black star Artist 15c)

thx soooo much - this is the topic I have been pleading for - I was slightly despairing when I saw the pedal board (I can't afford the chase bliss pre-amp let alone 2 great amps and the rest) - I predicted I would eventually see "my" EOB strat (tho mine wasn't given to me by EOB) - slightly disappointed that it didn't have the whammy bar - cos that's way fun - you did inadvertently address my big issue : polyphonic sustain through EQ and compression - tho you have to do a whole episode about the latter (as you both said) - a lot of the ep was also DAW friendly and I thank you for that

The attach of the LP was so much higher than the strat and that is why the LP won. On an amplifier the feedback network can diminish the sustain. Thanks guys great show!

This is one of the most fascinating videos you guys have done in a long time. I was literally glued to the screen and will be watching again. If nothing else, the discussion you guys had and some things you left unsaid that became apparent helped me understand more of my own preferences. One thing that bugs me...I'm not convinced that single coils are more dynamic than humbuckers. Dynamic range is about the difference between the loudest sound a thing can make without distorting (itself) and its noise floor. Humbuckers drive an amp/pedal into distortion more easily because their output is higher, and their noise floor is lower from picking up so much less hum. I'm pretty sure that if you actually measured it apples-to-apples, humbuckers would have as much dynamic range if not more. The difference is more so that something about Strats and Teles (specifically) reward you for playing harder while Les Pauls (again, specifically) reward a much lighter touch. You can't play them the same way and expect the same results; it's not just about what happens to the signal electrically....LPs just choke out if you hit them the way SRV hit his Strat...the sound dies almost immediately. And you guys have both said that you play hard. I'm totally convinced that's why you (and most people) prefer the guitars you do...they match your playing style. As for why that's the case, I wouldn't hazard a guess. I would, however, bet that you could count the number of people in the world who really understand why on one hand, and I'd bet one of them is named Paul.

This reminded me of the common reflection that some of our favourite tones from records (especially from heavier bands) have less gain than we imagine. The guitar signal may be cleaner but when it's processed in post, the compression that is added makes it behave as if there were more gain. Ie the benefit of gain with the benefit of more clarity.

Hi Mick and Dan! I'm still at the early parts of the video, but here's just a little idea. I would normalize the peaks of the Strat and Les Paul waves for the sustain comparison. They obviously have different envelopes and different outputs, but the Strat might 'win' in the total sustain 'race' if we normalize. Moreover, amp and other equipment choice following the guitars, and the way those are optimized for that particular guitar would have a significant effect on the final amplified sustain picture. You are my favorite in KZread. Cheers from Turkey!
