I'm finding Glorantha to be a LOT. Looking at it from the outside, as someone who's known about it since I started TTRPGs back in the 80s, but I've only taken a dive into the setting in the last year or so, it's exceptionally daunting. So far, I have found it overwhelming. It doesn't help that nobody in any of my gaming circles over the years has been into it at all. The closest I ever came was my dad, who got me into RPGs. His group used the old Avalon Hill version as the game mechanics for their ongoing game, but they were playing in some sort of Medieval England-type setting. I've never known anyone who used Glorantha at all. It's a nut I really want to crack. As far as what part of the book I'm most interested in or might help me the most, I think it's the same as it was for you. The why & how of it all. Really diving into what "hero questing" is, why it's done, how you actually run that as a GM. Because let's be honest, if RuneQuest ever ends up on my table, I'll be the one GMing. GMing advise and guidance is what I'm sort of desperate for. I'm looking for my "ah-ha!" moment with this game, and I haven't found it yet.

This book will really help you get into Glorantha. Running it will help your players get into it s well. It is the perfect initiation. I agree Glorantha is daunting. Sss overcomes this by starting small and expanding slowly. Glorantha is amazing, worth the effort.

I think that chapter twelve - epizodes sound most useful for me too . I played both King of dragon Pass and Six Ages computer games and they are useful to set one into mood for Glorantha. So as you say this chapter goes deeper and builds upon that.

I was lucky enough to stumble across a copy of this at Half Price Books. For, like, not 250% the retail price. It's a great book.

It's hard to say exactly which part would be most useful. I have some Runequest books but have never run it as the world is so complete compared to other settings that it actually ends up being a bit overwhelming and intimidating for someone new to it. The Heroquesting section looks particularly interesting as it explains the cycle, but really for me the best part would be having a cohesive location with cultural details (customs, people, etc.) and then some linked adventures tied to that specific location. To me that is the promise of Runequest: to be an immersive experience where players actually feel they are part of a living community, and where they become invested in its people and goals. It's really hard to do that in many RPGs but Runequest seems tailor made to make that exact thing possible.

Liked and been subscribed for a while. I’m always very interested in roleplaying or GMing initiatory experiences, ceremonies etc. and how that impacts on your worldview - seeing the world through different eyes as you journey through your life experiences etc. so I think initiations either at the start or in episodes. It’s hard to choose!

Although I don't play Runequest, I do have the starter set. The book looks like it would also be useful as a source to draw inspiration from for my own ongoing campaign.

This book is just fantastic. It really does point the way toward really unlocking all that is truly exceptional about Runequest and Glorantha. If you bought the starter set, and have a group of players new to the game, I would recommend using some of the pregens and running a few of the adventures to help players get to grips with the rules etc. THEN, use Six Seasons of Sartar, roll up all new characters and go back in time, live through the History of the Haraborn [ideally following this up with the two sequels‘company of the dragon’ and ‘the seven tailed wolf’]. Do this and you as a GM and your players will really know what RQG is all about, and will have enjoyed one hell of a ride. I cannot recommend this enough. [oh please don’t include me in the draw, I already own it, let someone else benefit]

New to Runequest(have been aware of it for ages) and finally dipped my toes into the water. Yay. For me, understanding what a clan does, and what is expected of players to "adventure" in the game world. There is a lot to absorb in Glorantha and being able to parse what the players need to understand to get going and to enjoy the world is important to me. edit: grammar

I agree. There are a lot of cultural dimensions of Glorantha that players need to help with immersion.

I agree the Rmance Meeter is something I would use the most. I am also interested in the Treating the Community as a Character.

Great review. I've been reading through SSS( and The Company of the Dragon ) for a bit now. I would say that I wouldn't recommend these books for EVERYONE. However, if you are new to RuneQuest, and you'd like to run a campaign, but don't know where to start, this is it! You should also have either the Starter Set or the Core rules. Starter set if you're ok with using pregen characters, the core rules if your group would rather create their own characters. For me, the biggest thing I gained from this book( aside from really wanting to run this campaign, and trying to figure out if I can afford the time to do it! ) is a better understanding of at least one way to run heroquests. I've been playing RuneQuest since the early 80's with RQ2, and until I read this, heroquests were really a mystery to me.

The runes and how they should be played (character traits) is something I still struggle with - making those associations.

Hello! I'm a bit late there, but you never know I started reading runequest material last year after receiving the French translation I had backed. It contained the core book, the bestiary, the GM pack and the Glorantha sourcebook... and it was quite overwhelming at first to be honest. I'm lucky enough to speak English, so when Chaosium launched the Starter Kit I ordered a copy without having to wait for the translation. Only after that was I able to actually play the game more regularly. In the case of this book, I would take your advice when you claim it's probably one of the best ways to be introduced to Glorantha outside of the Chaosium books. I'm finally confident to play more thanks to the starter kit, so I guess such a supplement would be the best next step to launch a campaign in this incredible world. Anyways, thanks a lot for your review!
