Was never known as Marineland. Marineland is a different park in Palos Verdes CA. It was known as MARINE WORLD then merged with Africa USA to become MARINE WORLD AFRICA USA in Redwood City. Then relocated to Vallejo in 86. I loved MWAUSA as a kid so I want to tip my hat to that park (not trying to be a know it all.). One of the elephants there played the Bantha in Star Wars and they had the Bantha costume at the park! Love your volgs Jacob - ☮

K-9 was Marvin's dog's name. Cincinnati zoo also takes advantage of parking areas with solar roofs. It's a great idea and I've wondered why big places like Walmart didn't do the same? Several times storms have knocked out our Walmart and they lost a lot of inventory.

Recently found a hat from when it was Marine World Africa USA. Remember the whales and dolphins at that park. A friend and I got season passes and would drive from Sacramento after work for a quick couple of rides about once a week back in the early 2000’s.

My dad took me to Marineworld when it was just Marineworld. Before they added the warm blooded animals and added Africa USA. It had just opened in Redwood City on the peninsula south if San Francisco. It was very sparse compared to today's standards. The only non marine (and crowd draw) attraction they had was a water skiing elephant! Jacob my very first car was a used Toyota Corona. Yes, a CORONA. It was a great little car!. I drive a Prius now. Yes, they last if you keep the maintenance up. Safe travels, Jacob!

Used to go there so often as a kid. The last time I really went was when I was 19 I think which was... a long time ago now. It was basically my home away from home when I was young and got season passes. I used to ride all the rides by myself because my family was too scared, and I was the youngest. The shark aquarium is my favorite thing in the park, I could stand in there for hours.

I grew up going to this park when it was in Redwood City! It was Marine World, then Marine World Africa USA. They both outgrew the old space and also the land in what is now part of Silicon Valley became too valuable. The original land is now the headquarters for Oracle. I haven’t been back since it became Six Flags.

Park opened when I was 1 year old! Many, many fun school field trips were had. Small correction, it opened as "Marine World" not Land. Just a zoo, no rides. Then it merged with "Africa USA", becoming "Marine World Africa USA", 55 years later and I still remember the radio jingle. This vid was a blast from the past, thank you!

The original name of this park was Marine World, NOT Marineland. Marineland was a park located in Palos Verdes, California (near Los Angeles) that closed in 1987. Marine World opened in 1968 in Redwood City, California (on the peninsula south of San Francisco and north of San Jose). As the name suggests, it was marine life themed and had only shows, specifically involving marine mammals. There was a dolphin 🐬 show, a killer whale show, a seal 🦭 show, and a water skiing show (no marine mammals, just humans). They eventually explained by adding land mammals, mostly from Africa, with some from Asia. The land mammals included lions, tigers, elephants 🐘, zebras 🦓, various members of the cat family (cheetahs, leopards 🐆). The land mammals weren’t in actual “shows,” but shown while a host would talk about the species (what they ate, where their natural habitat was, mating habits, etc.) Similar to zoo, but with a little more entertainment. In 1986 Marine World move to the present location in Vallejo. At that time it was in the form as it was in Redwood City: the marine mammals, water skiing, and land mammals. At some after the move to Vallejo they began to add theme park “rides” (such as roller coasters). Then began a transition to what it is now. The water skiing show was dropped, then one by one the animal (both land and marine) eventually went away, to be replaced by roller coasters and other rides. This greatly accelerated when Six Flags purchased the park in 1999. Today the dolphin 🐬 show is just about the last remaining vestige of the original Marine World.

All that water around the park was part of the reason they chose to relocate to Vallejo from Redwood City. When it was Marine World Africa USA, it was predominantly an animal and marine park, but had water ski shows. In the early days in Vallejo, they still had water ski shows, and that's why there is a grandstand along the water's edge.

This was named “Marine World Africa USA” in the late 80s early 90s, it was one of the best wildlife attractions in California. My family would go every year. Six flags ruined it. Adding the rides forced cancellations of many animal demonstrations and some animals had to leave the park completely. I understand but very unfortunate that education was pushed aside for thrill rides.
