Sitar Samrat Nikhil Banerjee: Raga Malkauns: Tabla: Shri Samir Chatterjee

Malkauns is a raga in Indian classical music. It is one of the oldest ragas of Indian classical music. The equivalent raga in Carnatic music is called Hindolam, not to be confused with the Hindustani Hindol.
Please note that the tabla player is in this performance is Shri Samir Chatterjee and not Anindo Chaterjee.
Malkauns belongs to the Bhairavi thaat. Its notes are Sa, komal Ga, shuddh Ma, komal Dha, and komal Ni. In Western classical notation, its notes can be denoted as: tonic, minor third, perfect fourth, minor sixth and minor seventh. In raga Malkauns, Rishabh (Re - second) and Pancham (Pa - perfect fifth) are completely omitted. Its jaati is audav-audav (five-five, that is, pentatonic).
Arohana : .Ni. Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa
Avarohana : Sa Ni Dha Ma Ga Ma Ga Sa OR Sa Ni Dha Ma Ga Sa
The 'Ga' used is actually Ga-Sadharan (the rough minor third), 316 cent above Sa [3]
Malkauns is a serious, meditative raga, and is developed mostly in the lower octave (mandra saptak) and in a slow tempo (vilambit laya). Ornaments such as midh, gamak and andolan are used rather than 'lighter' ornaments such as murki and khatka. Komal Ni is generally considered the starting note (graha swara), and the notes komal Ga and komal Dha are performed with vibrato (andolit). All five swaras can function as pausing notes.
The komal Ni in Malkauns is different from the komal Ni in Bhimpalasi.
The best time for this raga is late night.
'Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj' (film Baiju Bawra), 'Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi' (film Navrang), 'Chham Chham Ghunghroo Bole' (film Kaajal), 'Ankhiyan Sang Ankhiyaan Laagi Aaj', 'Balma Maane Na' (film Opera House) and 'Rang raliyaan karat sautan sang' (film Birbal My Brother), 'Gori tera gaon bada pyara' (film Chitchor), 'Ek Ladki Thi' (film Love You Hamesha), 'Tumko Lekar Chale' (film Jism), are a few Hindi film compositions based on Malkauns. 'Rajasekhara' in the film 'Anarkali' in Tamil and Telugu is a composition based on this in South India.

A most complete Malkauns by the God of Sitar, leaving us in a trance. A reference benchmark of sorts. One only wishes that the younger generation of musicians follow and emulate Nikhilda to keep alive the purity of our music , rather than playing to the gallery for larger following & recognition and in turn loosing the soul of our music.

Raag Malkauns fascinates me. It does things to me. It keeps Dr.Hyde in me away. Dr.Jekyll takes over. He in turn is seduced by the initial plaintive notes of Malkauns. The introspective langourous initial Melody becomes a cyclotron as it adroitly moves in drut khayayal. A pastmaster, Nikhil, If ever there was one! May his tribe multiply Jashwant Narsidas Ponda

@@VISHUDDHATMA Yes, I was the tabla player in this concert recording. It is Bath festival during the Autumn of 1982. It has already been published by Chandradhara, a recording label from Stuttgart, Germany. Unfortunate, the key person, probably the CEO, of Chandradhara, Mr. Gopi Nag is no more. This was a very special performance by Nikhil Banerjee. We drove from Wembley to Bath in the afternoon. On arrival at the venue, the organizers delivered to us that they had already sold out all seats in the auditorium and more people, traveling from quite far, were waiting to be accommodated. They needed permission from Nikhil ji to remove some of the chairs and make arrangements for everyone, including those waiting outside, to sit on the floor. Nikhil ji was apparently very enthused to hear this and happily gave permission. With people sitting around us on the floor, eager to soak up every nuance of his artistry, Nikhil ji played an inspired concert of five hours. This Malkaunsh was the cream of it. He was evidently in a sustained state of trance during it, taken over and guided by some divine energy. I was fortunate to be the closest to him to witness and experience all it. And, thanks to Mr. Ratan Mukherjee for carrying and setting up his Grundik spool recorder, so that we are able to hear it now and in the future.

Listening to the 'ahaha and vahvah!' from the listeners in a small room, at 49:33 this is obviously not a formal studio recording and thus a private concert. So the name of the Tabla Player is difficult to find out, unless we get some help here.
