When my school went fully online, I bought a $300 chair so that "I can sit for a longer period of time". But after watching your videos and doing my own research, I decided to go completely furniture free. Removed my desk and refunded my chair and it has been amazing. I am naturally an active person and going furniture free was really liberating because I could stretch while I work. I don't think I can ever go back to the old lifestyle of a desk anymore. I am a creative as well and now the whole floor is my table its freaking amazing. My old desk was 2 meters long and even then it was still small for me to work on my projects and in the end they all get done on the floor. It was so frustrating trying to read details off the imac on top of the desk etc I guess I just needed that push to make the transition! Thanks a lot thoughtworthy co!

I shortened both my dining table and my work desk to about 35cms and it’s perfect :) they are the exact same size and width now so I can push then together for dinner parties (post lockdown 🤞) also, a skeptical friend came over for dinner the other day. At first she complained that she constantly had to shift but when I explained why that is a good thing, she was completely on board :)

The best part of “floor” or “ground” living is that it’s what are natural biology evolved for. Sitting and lying on firm (but cushioned) surfaces is unforgiving of bad positioning. You don’t get to lie there with your neck too flexed for 45 minutes, you’re gonna know in 45 seconds that’s it not comfortable. So it forces you to find the right position for sleeping. When sitting on a cushion on the floor again you’ll be figuring and adjusting every few minutes. This is what you’re supposed to do. Sitting motionless for hours is only enabled by hyper comfortable unnatural devices called modern furniture. In the mobility community there’s a saying “the best position is the next position.” We’re supposed to move, not be still for hours on end. Floor living forces this principle because one position is simply not artificially made comfortable enough to stay on that long. But you’re right it’s not about furniture free. That’s why I call it floor living. I am, ironically, a furniture maker. But most furniture is still applicable to floor living. You just cut the legs shorter and forget about modern chairs. Chairs are the hardest thing to make anyway so good riddance. Luckily I have an eastern design aesthetic so making chabudais instead of dining tables appeals to my design style anyway. And they require less wood and less stress is on the legs because they are so short that you can get away with daintier designs that don’t have to support high leverage like 3 foot long legs have to deal with. And one cool thing is that, as a tabletop gamer you don’t have to have a massive dining/gaming table for large gaming sessions / board games. You can just use the floor. I’m f course you could make an absolutely massive Japanese dining table if you wanted.

My floor gang setup is a coffee table and a couch cushion with a pillow folded in half to provide sit bone relief. The pillow also brings my elbows to just the right height which is a bonus considering it was really only something i did to prevent sit bone pain. Sit bone pain is the largest source of pain next to ankles in my experience with this lifestyle, lower back can sometimes be a burden to but its gotten better over the years because my muscles have got stronger. I have never had any back support like these two do _(EDIT: I have no clue how but i forgot that i did used to have some back support actually. When i first got into this lifestyle it started out pretty simple, I took a couch cushion and placed it on the floor and used the couch as a back rest. Then i switched to the wall which worked nicely but i needed another cushion for my back. Most recently about a year or two ago I switched to no back support after re-arranging my setup. This was basically just me changing the Feng shui of the room cause i got bored of how things were arranged.)_ but if i did have one of those chairs it wouldn't be at the right height and im not in a position to saw my table legs shorter lol.. I'll also be honest i thought i was the only crazy person to live like this 🤣 I got into this lifestyle for lack of space reasons while somehow making it work and getting used to it. 🤷‍♂ It's crazy cause now im thinking.. lol i sat at a desk for most of my life and have been floor gang now for about 5 years.. the one thing I think would be better is back support for when you just wanna lay back for a second, i did say my back has got stronger but i can't lie being able to lean back every once in a while is nice. I think that's about it from my experience honestly I'm curious if i would enjoy going back to a normal desk at this point, i am moving in about a months time so it will probably be goodbye floor gang but we'll see.. 🥲

For anyone who stumbles upon this, this is my setup: Bought some legs for the desk today (legs have 30cm, desk is 3cm thick), I found after a week of testing that 33 cm height overall really is ideal to rest the arms (my height is 182cm). I sit on a computer chair with dismantled legs (the only flat seat with a backrest I had at home). It's not very thick (~4cm), so even if I add an additional cushion, the height is still good, although less space for legs. But my arms can rest even more comfortably. Mind you, I'm quite flexible and sit cross-legged most of the time. It's good to be flexible. If you're not, then sitting on the floor may get you to start stretching and working out - definitely a benefit. I placed my latop on a few books so I can look at the screen straight, without lowering my head which would invite slouching. From my other comment, I found it would be good to have a yoga block instead of an additional cushion, to elevate the spine properly and straighten my back. Hope this helps. Good luck!

the thing is with reminders to move, is you are facing less impetus mentally and physically and i would also argue that there is more risk of injury or at least misuse of body, when starting to move from a very static position. also, just my little personal soapbox point here: those office chairs on wheels? less good for caring for back in terms of avoiding slip discs etc. stable chairs will be the future i like to think, with the futuristic office offering antique style Shaker style chairs ..these would also definitely offer impetus to get up and move about and stretch. this is such a good youtube channel. thankyou to you both, throughtworthyco

I have a DIY sit on floor, chair and standing desk setup. I have a floor desk and a beanbag for sitting on the floor, a conventional table and chair setup and then I put the floor desk on the table for a standing desk HAHAHA. My mom calls it weird but it works for me!

I've replaced my bed with a handmade futon and tatami mat setup, which is amazing. So that's a start. I still can't sit on the floor for long without my legs dying and falling off so still working on that part.

My husband and I are elderly and we did the same sleeping move. Sold the high antique bed and we feel much better. Only. mistake we made was getting 5" high shikibutons as we are newbees- we could have use 3" high ones at the tatami is so great. Sold our couch and 4 living room chairs also- but we need the bookcase and other storage pieces as our small house has no closets.

An alternative to floor desk is a floor chair + a food serving tray thing on legs that kmart sells to put the keyboard on and then sit with that over lap with keyboard on it and mouse on the ground and then look at in my case a big tv with the computer plugged into it.

In my defense, I was listening to all your videos while on a 6 hour kitchen clean-down and simplifying of all my kitchen/dining/decor items. Not much left for our family of 4. It’s so calming and will make for less time cleaning and sorting in the kitchen, and more time out in nature! Love your channel. You both have a wonderful gift for guiding the viewer with humor and positivity. Keep up the good work. Yours is unique among the many minimalist options out there.

Not sure if anyone else does this. But when I need a break from the desk/chair setup, I usually just sit on the ground and put my laptop on the chair. Or sit on a beanbag instead ✌🏻

  • @Summer-xu8qu

This is an interesting idea. I still think that standing desk/chair setup is better because I think constantly moving/changing posture is gonna break my flow and make me really inefficient. Standing desk/chair setup would help me to keep my flow while still allowing my body to move around. Still, I think it would be a nice idea to have furniture free living in other aspects like sleeping on the floor(which i already do), dining on the floor etc.

if you already have a standing desk and a task chair. you're on the right track. i suggest a saddle chair or perch/wobble chair that adjusts its height so that you're in a half sit/stand position. finally, get a walking treadmill or stationary bike for your desk. i don't have a task chair but i do have a walking treadmill and an ikea nilserik, a folding chair and a yoga ball for variety. all of which i can plop on top of the walking treadmill that's permanently centered on my standing desk. im in the process of replacing the ikea nilserik with a saddle chair because i believe a saddle seat is superior to the ikea nilseriks seat style.

Haha actually you wouldn't want to see how it looks like below the tables! At the moment, we use 3M "velcro" strips stickied under the tables, and it's barely holding together. We've been toying with the idea of using magnets to organize the cables, maybe we'll experiment with it when we find the time :)

The only problem was that I do not have space for one more chair...?!? I never considered sitting on the floor, we are so blocked in our minds nowdays...whole Japan (and other cultures) was sitting on floor for centuries, it cannot be "that" bad, right? 🙃 This is really crazy, thank you for enlightenment, I am starting tomorrow😉💕

  • @ThoughtworthyCo

Getting up from the floor is a natural movement we should all be able to do, unless someone has a pre-existing injury or something. In a way, it's the same kind of "burden" as when we're working out our legs doing squats, etc. Good luck!

  • @bwfrieds
    @bwfrieds11 ай бұрын

If you want to try squatting against the wall, like at 1:29, you might already have a folding ironing board. That could help you find your preferred height during your trial.
