Sit On Kayaks in Flood Rapids - Near Disaster! (Medina River)

Спорт

So the Old Town Sportsman 120 sit on top kayak rips rapids...This trip we challenge the Medina River at 1000 cfs after some heavy local rainfall. Nothing like paddling in the Texas Hill Country with high flow rate!

    Thank you so much! It’s honestly at a point I never thought it would be, so that’s pretty cool haha. We will see where it goes! Man I hope you can find happiness for real. Outdoors are one of the leading ways to help that, from a scientific perspective. I’m always so much more clear after a stint in nature. There’s lots of paddling groups all over the states. I work 8 to 6 M-F and have all the complexities of life to deal with. Its tough to find time to get outside and even tougher to find time to edit and produce content. But its something I enjoy so I sacrifice other things to make time for it. I don't have sponsors and the ad revenue was basically $0 last year so it doesn't bring in much revenue haha. Sit on is all I've ever used, my footrest are built into the mold of the kayak which allows me to lock myself into the kayak better by using the force of my legs pushing me into the seating. The add on footrest seem too weak to my liking. I have hole plugs but pop those out when facing rough waters. Ended up buying a wet suit for wintertime floating which in my opinion is the route to take over a sit in kayak. Chunk the Pump!

    Id argue that the old town sot was a better choice than the pelicans the others were in even with the higher center of gravity. Flooded waters, while fun, can be so dangerous and brings many hazards into play that normally arent. Especially with pool toy boats such as sundolphins/pelicans.

    Man I was a great video. That 120 handed those rapid very well. I usually just see people using it two fish but you use it to kayak & that's what I really like to see. I don't know if you know man but my doctor released me from my foot surgery & man I've been kayaking every since. And it get better! My foot shrinking. It's no longer 6 1/2 inches wide now it's 6 inches wide now. I am so happy about that. But I still have very fat wide toes so. I guess I'm going to have to live with that. Hopefully I can find some shoes and socks to wear by time winters time gets here. And then on top of that! Just two weekends ago my third son John just got his first Kayak and we have been kayaking every single weekend. Man I love kayaking with my son it is so awesome. Last weekend me & my son John , my co-workers , & a couple of his buddy we all went kayak fishing & man we all had a blast. Made some new kayak friends which was awesome. & just yesterday me and my son went kayaking about 10 - 15 mile or the river & got sunburn really really good yesterday from my our heads down to our feet. Which you know i have to kayak Barefooted 👣 and found out my son do too because his foot is very very extremely wide too. His foot is exactly like mine. You can almost call us ( TWINS ) foot. "LOL" he does not have very fat wide toes like I do but he do have big toes though that's are equally straight across like mines foot though. Tell you we are both feeling the sunburn today man. I think I need to stay away from Red Lobster for a while. "LOL" I love kayaking with my son now & he loving it too. Am ready to take him kayak camping now . It is so much fun with Father and Son kayaking. Thank you for sharing this video brother. Look forward to the next one.

    You should actually learn how to whitewater kayak. Texas has a decent enough community to learn and it is much much safer than in the craft you guys are in. It is also more fun. I’ve been down class III/IV in North Carolina and spent plenty of time around swift water. I’ve even owned a whitewater kayak but sold it since it wasn’t used much in TX. • @adventuring_with_MK

    I’m loving the videos! I’m curious, do you think a sit on top or a sit inside kayak is better for kayak camping? I always thought sit insides were better for that, especially in faster moving water (I was thinking your stuff stays dryer when it’s actually under part of the boat), but would it would be about the same as having it on top (just strapped with the bungees on a sit on top) if they’re in dry bags? Have you noticed any difference with this? Are there advantages or disadvantages for either type of kayak when it comes to camping? What you said about the self-bailing ability of a sit on top seems like it would be good for traversing wavy/rapid waters, but a spray skirt may also keep water out of a sit in if you’re going through rapids. Just curious of your thoughts on this!

  • @GatewoodBrown

    @GatewoodBrown

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! I’ve done both and am now 100% on the sit on top train for river kayak camping and general kayaking. The self bailing, comfort and storage capacity excels above a sit in kayak. Also with sit in, you’re limited to using several small dry bags instead of bigger, fewer dry bags so organization is more important. Also you’ll have sitting water inside a sit in so there’s more potential for saturation if your dry bag isn’t good. Sit in kayaks are lighter and more maneuverable so if you’ve got a skirt they handle better! I never liked dealing with a skirt though. Hope that helps!
