SISTERLOCKS | I'm BIG MAD at the Sisterlocks community 😤

I left every single sisterlocks group I was apart of, and I feel so much better! Here's why. 😌

Not all head can carry 400 locs! My 8 yo daughter has 367 locs and I watched her consultant tying herself in knots trying to squeeze 400 locs on her head! She was all type of apologetic for not being able to reach that number 😳, I was confused because my baby looked amazing with a very full head of locs! Yeah the community is toxic even to their own!

I had SL long before they bcme popular, and there was NO social media. I lived in NY and in the rare instance that I ran into another woman that had SL, we could just call out the name of our consultant and laugh: we were all seeing the same person 😅 She got us all together once for a "meet up". We marveled at how different locs looked on different heads, and at how gorgeous we all were.

Isn't it funny? No matter the group...some people will always seek to make themselves "elite". I cannot figure it out. Yet historically we have perpetuated this trend. Culturally...socially... racially....economically....color wise.. familial legacy. Perhaps it's human nature to want to "one up" each other. Regarding the "sisterlocks sisterhood" it is especially sad and unseemly. This hair journey has been a collective long arduous trek. Just as we finally embrace our own innate beauty almost immediately we "muddy" it with negative elitism. In the words of the late great Al Jerraux..."We're in this love together. So let's behave accordingly.

To he honest with you. I love it when small, micro locs are not the same size. When there's variation in loc size, it looks like there's more texture and frankly, it looks more natural. I also don't care for the grid. Your locs are very tiny. Can you imagine having 100 more of them? Every head is different. No matter where you go, there's always a group of people with low self esteem who try to bring others down to where they themselves are. I'm so glad that you recognized that and got out. African Americans, especially, know what it feels like to be put down or considered to be "not as good as" someone else because of skin color, body shape/size, lip size, etc. So now that we're trying to move on from that here we go again with loc number and size. Insecure, petty and mean.

I recently started looking into sisterlocks because my mother wanted me to do her hair. Now, I'm not a certified consultant but I figured I've been braiding since 9 yrs old, licensed cosmetologist, certified Trichologist & natural hair consultant so it shouldn't be a problem... I did notice ALL the above while doing my research/browsing and experienced some of what you mentioned. I didn't let it deter me because I know & understand my skill level. Btw, my mom's hair is turning out beautiful & I'm finishing tomorrow, Yayyyyy!!! 🤗 However, she will NOT have 400+ locks because of thinning issues she has contributed to. However, her hair will be healthier & less stressed (due to her over manipulation) and that's what's more important to me. So, thanks for the positive vibes🤗

At the end of the day the common denominator is that mostly women and men of colour get our hair done like this, it becomes an extension of who we are and to put down another woman or man because you’re not satisfied with the number of locks and I hair it’s self deprecating.

I watched Sisterlocks videos, and I specifically watched the videos of women in the Sisterlocks community and their attitudes towards other forms of small locs ( which has frequently been called step-Sisterlocks ). Because of the elitist mentality and separatist attitude, I decided against Sisterlocks altogether. Instead, I installed my own locs. And the most hilarious thing about it is... women that I see in person that have Sisterlocks... Do. Not. Know. The. Difference!!! I have been loc’d for 3.5 years now, and I absolutely love being in complete control of my re-tightening schedule and not having to deal with the mental drain of socializing with people who look down on other loc’d sisters because they don’t have a Sisterlocks certificate.

All these things could also be said for the loose hair natural hair community. Texturism is a HIGH-KEY problem there. You'll never see proper representation on youtube for anything higher than 3c, even though the majority of black people have 4b and 4c hair. People want to act like looser curl patterns are the only way to make natural hair look "aesthetic". It's annoying and toxic asf and a big reason for why I left the loose natural hair community and transitioned to having locs.

4:50 Tell me about it. I did DIY microlocks and I am LOVING them but I've been looking for someone to do reties. I called ONE SL consultant so far and she was SO rude. She kept laughing when I told her I did them myself and used a 4 point rotation (she acted as if a 4 point rotation was somehow wrong and unheard of even though interlockers have been using it for years), she referred to my hair as "... whatever you have on your head", and repeatedly told me I didn't have sisterlocks even though I knew that already- to the point that I had to say "I dont CARE if they are sisterlocks or not". After seeing my hair in pictures, she begrudgingly said I did alright and said she'd schedule with me, but I feel like I'd just be laughed at continuously if went to her. I want to go to someone who is knowledgeable about sisterlocks AND microlocks. I feel like she just wanted sisterlocks to be the ONLY way someone can have nice, smaller locs.

My sisterlocks look much bigger than yours but I probably have a larger number of them. I used to feel really insecure about the size of my locs because of the way people act like all sisterlocks should be insanely tiny. It's really messed up that seemingly regardless of the number, there's this pressure to meet some imaginary standard of what sisterlocks look like. All of ours are beautiful and unique.

The things that you mentioned are the reason that I did not get "Sisterlocks." Although my loctitian is a certified Sisterlocks consultant, I have micro locks installed. My grid is a a little different that the straight sisterlocks grid and I LOVE IT! My consultant is leaving the community as well. Her given reasons are that many consultants are not cosmetologists and are not trained to take care of the scalp and other hair issues that are not addressed in any Sisterlocks class. She also doesn't like the sisterlocks tool. At any rate, She installs the number of locs that are appropriate for your hair texture, health, and density, and although I counted my locs, not once has she ever. I am 5 months loc'ed and when people approach me or comment about my Sisterlock I am happy to inform them that I have microlocs.

I’m sorry you experienced that, I’m glad you did what was best for yourself and left. When I had my beautiful sister locs I was in a toxic relationship and it caused my hair to fall out, so my consultant had to cut the rest off . Negativity eats away at you and starts to effect your health over time. I’ve noticed the nastiness that goes on as well and it’s all the way across the board from skin color to hair choices. The saddest thing to me is to see a beautiful sister with natural hair whether it be locs or lose .... make fun of a sister with a wig or weave. I literally see grown women acting like children with the swinging of their hair and scratching of the scalp excessively as if they have lice, just to prove the point that their hair is real and other races do this too, I’ve noticed it more and more! My hair is natural lose I’m going to get sister locs again hopefully this year because I miss having them. Your beautiful and so is your hair. God made us all in his likeness and as a bonus he gives us free will ... the power to choose whatever we want!!! Thank you for sharing and having the courage to speak on it!! God Bless You! 🥰

I like this video and agree with the sentiment - some of those groups have some very bad behaviours. That said, the lock count does matter in some cases - on my first set I had 472, this set I have 572 - my last set were too big! The difference in this set vs the first is pretty phenomenal and it’s not just about the count it’s about the overall establishment. I don’t agree with any kind of put downs or elitism, but I believe the loc count can and is helpful and indicative - along with other things. But bad energy is never good - glad you got out and wishing you all the very best on your journey.

Maybe some people suggest less to help keep maintenance manageable if they do it themselves or more affordable if they have it done by a consultant. I don’t self retie so it makes little difference really - same length of time in the chair as it used to take before but this new consultant is more skilled than those I have had previously. Ultimately your consultant will work through this with you - pick a good one! Best wishes Hope that helps?

I have been on my sisterlocks journey for 13 years. I have 350 locks because my hair is soft and fine. It took years before my hair would even lock. Even now if I wanted to I could comb it out. I did my research before beginning sisterlocks journey. I knew the stages my hair was going to be going though. To me it was going to be worth it in the end. I had what I call the ugly duckling stage that lasted for almost a year. During that stage the hair band was my best friend. I love my hair and the only thing I would have done differently would have been to have my installation done when I first saw/wanted them. To me all sisterlocks are beautiful to me know matter what the size of the lock. No sisterlocks look the same because of the different grades of hair types. Enjoy your journey and don’t let those folks get under your skin. Bullies will be bullies these just happen to be wearing sisterlocks.

Why is everyone making locking so difficult? It is a natural part of who we are and where we came from. Our hair literally loc on it own without any manipulation. So why would anyone think of degrading someone because of the amount of loc or how much money you spent. I am so sorry for such an experience. It is so messedup

I never joined the sisterhood community and I'm enjoying my locs. I git my locs installed because I wanted my God to be a neat as possible. My location was certified and gave me the introduction welcome kit to sister locs. I had already made up in my mind that I was going to do my own sister locs, so I watched the good bad and ugly about sister locs. I decided I was ready after 3 yrs of looking into what I felt was a commitment to grow my hair in the 4 yrs. It's going 👍 great. Thanks for sharing.

Who knew this was a thing 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m newly in this natural journey inspired by my 17yr old... You are so right you are already trying to build confidence so negative comments from your own community is unfortunate and unnecessary. Who the hell has time to count braids and/or locs 🤦🏾‍♀️ wow just 😳 nice video by the way

Like a month ago I have found out about this hairstyle before I did not even know it’s exist. So, I liked it and start doing my own hair , just so easy to do it but takes a long time . We have the time now .

I survive. I got when I started doing research about sister locks versus micro locks. It’s almost like a snobmess vibe

I love that you shared your thoughts on this subject. I have never joined a SL group but these ideas that I hear going around that if you don't have a certain amount of SL then they aren't real or if you retighten with a tool that isn't SL you no longer have SL is ridiculous. I like the suggestion of starting your own SL group and keeping it positive. I would join your group in a heartbeat! But we also have to bring the SL company to task because they set up these rules to begin with and planted these elitist type seeds.

Each person has their own hair journey. As many people that are in a journey, it it how many that it should be accepted. It is really crazy, the "The Them and US" attitude. Gosh...I do my own hair and save my money and I wanted hair Freedom not another prison. Folks become the things that they rage against. Glad you took care of yourself and get out of situations that cause more emotional harm.
