This is the movie that Ebert said in his print review the following: "I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it." Ebert's review of the movie is more famous than the movie itself.

As much as I enjoyed when they gushed about films that they loved I found it way more entertaining to hear them flat out destroy a film they hated. Siskel and Ebert would make a film roasting into must see television and when I first watched the review for North and heard Siskel and Ebert’s outward disdain and disgust towards it I said to myself if it’s that bad of a film then I want no part of it.

I genuinely think if Rob Reiner had not directed this and it had a great cast I think they still would have disliked it but not to this extent. Siskel even said whenever huge talent was involved in a bad film it was always more fun and easier to destroy. And that makes sense because Reiner was too talented not to know this movie wouldn’t work.

Siskel and Ebert always tore apart bad movies with big talent in them. In this case you had a great ensemble cast and Rob Reiner’s directorial career was on fire for about 10 years plus as mentioned Elijah Wood was proving to be a very good actor. Had this not been as big I’m sure they would have disliked it but not to this degree. They were just extremely upset because everyone involved in this project the cast and Reiner was f capable of doing so much better so they were too smart and talented to know this wasn’t a good project. I don’t hate the movie and wouldn’t even put it in my top worst of all time list but it’s definitely a disappointment when you consider all of the talent in front of and behind the camera and the saddest thing is Rob Reiner went from being an A+ director to now a D grade director whose maybe had two good films since.

Allow us to replace the credits with the words "We're Sorry" a hundred times! This movie is...amazing! It actually goes beyond belief! In today's PC world for a film like this to get made, let alone for kids, it's scary as shit! How could anyone greenlight this? How could anyone sign on for it? How could they get all these big name stars for such an ugly piece of cinematic prostitution?! Maybe Rob Reiner thought he had too many good films and needed a bad film to even it out. I felt the same shock and surprise as Nostalgia Critic at this review when this came out. I saw the ads and trailers and thought "Well, this looks like an innocent, whimsical kids movie. And Rob Reiner directed this! How bad can it be?" Then I looked at S & E's zero stars reviews and thought "It's THAT bad? How is that possible???". After looking at the clips, I finally started to understand. Now that I've seen this, I completely understand their reviews, while still failing to understand what Reiner was trying to do.

North was just an awful character in general. I know it’s not Elijah Wood’s fault by any means. I mean he put in the best effort he could even at such a young age and his ambition even in a stinker like this is admirable. But the character was such a pompous jerk and so poorly written that it doesn’t surprise me that is what he was dreaming the whole time. I feel like Elijah probably got pushed into it by his parents or agent and then Willis probably got talked into it by his then wife Demi Moore who encouraged him to take part because Rob Reiner was directing and he had just directed her in A Few Good Men. I can see her telling him if Rob Reiner is doing it you have to. Well unfortunately Demi got Rob Reiner at his best when they made A Few Good Men while Willis got the worst with North. Regarding the other stars who participated Rob Reiner was one of the best directors of this era. He had never made a single bad film until North. Everything before was good if not flat out classic. So I can imagine actors signing on to work with him alone because of his track record. It would be like getting to be directed by Steven Spielberg in 1941 or Francis Ford Coppola in Jack. The movie sucks but working with a legendary director is a opportunity too good to pass up. I’m sure that is what most of the cast who signed up for North was thinking.
