UPDATE: OCTOBER 2021: So something seems to have gone wrong for a lot of you trying this - I believe one of the later iOS14 updates has changed something which means that Setting Playback Destination to the HomePod Mini isn't connecting as it should. I'm working on a solution and will update ASAP! In the meantime, just be aware, Siri will only play through your iPhone...

Great intro to shortcuts. I’ve rapidly built up a SmartHome and recognize that adding new products will now consume less of my time but automating they home to take use of all of the tech is where I need/want to focus. This video was great as you’ve explained the reason for adding each step and not just that it should be added. This enables us end users to have a logic basis for figuring out what we want to do to customize this further. Thank you!

However, I have been having issues playing only one news podcast from apple podcasts. Even when I disable the continuous playing feature, the app keeps playing all the news until I stop the playback. I hoped this issue was solve in the latest update for apple podcasts but it is still an issue.

Very, very helpful. I have been looking for a certain solution, and the RSS Feed tip that you shared will work perfectly! I don't have a smart speaker, but I made a routine that runs on my phone each morning. I added dictation to mine to opt in and out of various actions.

Great automation. I took out the destination audio so it just plays from my phone while driving to work. I also added a way to get update of upcoming events and task for the day. Thank you it’s been a game changer.

Your third question should be why is another blind person replying to you? 🤣 On a serious note, we use a technology called a screen reader, it is an assistive technology for the blind. If you want to know more search for using voice over with iOS on KZread 🙏🏻

Nice tutorial, all good but, will not play this on HomePod mini. All the test is output on iPhone. Only radio is played on mini… Any fix available?

This video is virtually the exact answer to a sequence I want to run each morning. The only variation I have is: I want to say "Hey, Siri, start my day!" to trigger the shortcut. Any ideas?

Good question - if you simply name your Siri Shortcut as 'Start my day' rather than 'Good Morning', it will have the desired effect!

Hi! I set everything up as you did execpt i set up a calendar and a not the lights, everything seems fine, the text plays on my iphone and than the radio plays on the homepod. What can be the issue?

I had set up the Good Morning shortcut on my iPhone. However, the playback is always on my phone and not on my HomePod mini. I don’t know what part did I do wrong.

Will this work if i have the alarm going off directly on my homepod?

This is the video I have been looking for thanks. I got stuck right at the start I don't have an Automation tab under the Gallery tab?? Any suggestions?

Hmm, might be worth checking that the Shortcut app is fully up to date. Did you ever find a solution to your problem Pat?

Great video but the issue for me is when I put in Airplay to go through my HomePod what showed up for urs didn’t for me

This doesn’t seem to work with iOS 15 anymore, all spoken text will be played by the iPhone. The HomePod however will only play the music at the end. Do you have a way to fix this? -Yes the Playback destination is set to the HomePod.

Hi Philip, yes unfortunately iOS15 messed something up with this. I'm still working on a fix (at the moment, it plays only through the HomePod when the iPhone is unlocked - which isn't much use). Hoping to work out a fix and share it with everyone ASAP!

Great video! After I set everything up and try the play method it plays on my phone instead of my HomePod and then my volume button looks like my HomePod. Did I do something wrong?

Hi Joshua, Sorry for the very delayed response on this, I've been on a break for some time to finish my studies. No, you haven't done anything wrong - an iOS15 update inadvertently disabled the ability to set the playback destination to the HomePod which is very annoying. Here's hoping that it gets fixed in iOS16

Great stuff, glad you've got it working! Make sure the 'AirPlay' instruction is set to your specific HomePod Mini and ensure there's a good WiFi connection. Since my move, I've been encountering the same issue, and it appears to be due to WiFi dropping in and out for the HomePod - but I'm still working on that! Thanks so much for watching!

Hi C.A. - Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, it's been a VERY busy week! Short answer, no, we're not sure, but it's not just you experiencing it at the moment. We think it might have been something in one of the iOS14.X updates which has changed something. We're working on a fix and will post an update ASAP!

Hi Jennifer, sorry for the very delayed reply, I've been away for the last few months. Unfortunately an iOS15 update disabled the automatic playback function by accident, so here's hoping that Apple fix this in iOS16! Regarding the RSS feed, that is all still working okay - what seems to be the problem for you?

Agree with most people here - i have set my playback destination as my HomePod, however the shortcut still only plays on my phone instead of my HomePod. Can you please troubleshoot this? Feel like something is off as most of us are facing the same issue, thanks, much appreciated!

I actually set up a similar routine to the one shown on the day that iOS 15 was launched. It worked perfectly when I was on iOS 14 early in the day. However, later that day and after installing iOS 15, it stopped working. I therefore think it is a bug with iOS 15 (or 15 changed a setting to stop you being able to output to a HomePod).

This seems to be a problem for a lot of people at the moment - I'm wondering if one of the recent iOS updates has changed something within the settings. I'm investigating and will let everyone know a solution ASAP!

I didn't see your lights working as well in the demonstration? Was this script integrated with the morning lighting automation?

Well spotted John - you're right that the lights weren't seen to be working in the video, but that's because we were using those lights to light up the filming shot at the time! The good news is that, we have a better filming set up now so this won't impact us in the future!

The weather gets played back in in decimal point format (ie 84.33 deg F). I tried messing with the 'round' shortcut, but it doesn't work. tips or suggestions?

Good question - I believe if you want to have the temperature in Fahrenheit, this is often a problem. To fix it, input a Math command which will round the number for you: A really good example can be found here -> i.imgur.com/VruLYbS.jpg (Credit to original author of picture, but it's anonymous)

Not yet I'm afraid, I think some security update within the latest iOS is the problem. It appears to work consistently as a shortcut IF the iPhone is unlocked (which isn't much use). I am having an issue where when Siri is speaking the good morning text, it sounds very gittery and distorted. Almost like when you’re losing cell service during a call. My wifi and everything however is very strong. Any help??

Hey - unfortunately no, iOS15 caused a real problem with this, but I'm hoping that iOS16 will fix it. Up to now, I've not found a fix sadly...

Great video. Learned a few new things. Something that is quite annoying to me is that I can't get the automation to use the standard "natural" SIRI voice instead of the "computer generated sounding" voice. How do I change that?

Thanks for watching Frederick! If you want to change Siri's voice, go to the 'Speak Text' document instruction and click 'Show More'. This will open a drop down menu where you can change Siri's voice. Unfortunately the natural Siri voice we're used to isn't available yet (I don't know why) but maybe it will be added in iOS15?

Ensure that you set 'playback destination' to your HomePod/Mini - it should then play back through your HomePod! Hope this helped! (Sorry for the delay, we're now set up in our new studios!)

I can’t seem to get this to play on my HomePod even though it is set as the playback destination. I have googled and it seems you can’t get Siri to read text on a HomePod. So interested t know how this is working? Please help

Hi Clinton, thanks for watching. This tutorial uses a trick which gets your HomePod Siri to read text, but technically the process is done on your iPhone - not the HomePod itself. The 'reading of the text' is played through the HomePod Mini using Airplay. However, with the right knowhow, this means you can make the HomePod/Mini effectively read anything you want. If you go into Shortcuts -> Automations and create a personal automation, by first setting the playback destination as 'your homepod' and then adding a text action into the sequence (enter whatever text you like) and finally add the 'speak text' Document command, you can get Siri to read any set text you would like. Similarly, you can get Siri to read webpages using RSS feeds etc. I hope this helped! (and sorry for the delayed reply! I've just got internet set up in my new house!)

Looks like iOS 16 has completely broken this now. The speaking is fragmented, missing words out, or not playing at all most times. Also, the temperature readings include decimal points (for instance it says the temperature is 16.57 degrees). This is a real shame, as this Shortcut was excellent. Any ideas how to fix this?

This is a great question - I reckon there is a way to do this using the Time and Numbers functions within Siri Shortcuts, but it might get pretty complicated. If I can work out how to do it, I'll make a video on this for you Santosh!

@@HeyTechi One option I use is to make the last item in the shortcut to be: 'Start Timer for... x minutes' and ensure the timer setting on your iPhone is set to 'When timer ends... stop playing' - when the time has elapsed the music stops.

Or alternatively in an automation... set a Home scene to run that turns off all HomePod speakers based on the location of your iPhone. When you leave the house the HomePods turns off.
