They both sound great. I have been seriously considering Sire to add to my collection. Sweetwater had a Labor Day sale for the Marcus Miller P5 this past weekend. If I had the money, I would have jumped on it. I do own the Fender American Pro 2 P bass in 5 strings, and I love it. I have no regrets buying it. But the Sire does keep up with it in some regards. Good review 🦞

I love this Sires P5. They both sound great.

great comparison! On my all my fretless & acoustic basses I run "pressurewound" "groundwound" "rollerwound" "halfround" or whatever your favorite string maker calls squished roundwound strings. looking forward to the next one :-)

thanks for the review. didn't know that Sire went back and made a decent pickup for this bass. the original one was horrible to my ears. i replaced mine with a split from Howard Ulyate here in Nashville. huge improvement! i may go back to rounds on this one, i really liked the sound of it. great job!!!

The change was for the R model to my knowledge for a more vintage vibe. I don’t think the pup change applied to all models.

I am not a 5 strings guy I have to admit. Still struggling with my Spector LX 5. But I am a fanboy of the Sire P5. I had strung mine with LaBellas for one year and now decided to go for Roundwounds. I think I am not a flat string guy either 😅. But for the Sire price tag, it’s worth to have them both with flats and rounds.

Based on your spamming of this bass...there's one coming to a local shop next week and I'm going to try it, I tried the P5 and loved the quality but I'm not a fan of precision necks. If I like the V5 that's coming next week I'm gonna order the V5R! Thanks for posting so much info about this bass, I'd never heard of Sire till the guy recommended them over a Fender Squire CV bass that I was going to get!

"String-wise", as a worship band bass player, I use flatwounds on most of my instruments. This fits my sound needs best. With regards to 5-string P basses: esthetically speaking, they are not my favourite (sorry to disagree with Beebee - typically I am 100% aligned with Cats' opinions) - as they are just HUGE: I guess I could hide behind them - just like Beebee did in the video - but OK, that could be useful in some situations, not only for a cat 🙂. 4-string P's are already quite chunky.... But: great idea to test the Schecter P! I am absolutely looking forward that review, Lobster!

James Jamerson, Duck Dunn and even early Chuck Rainey tones could well be my 4-string tonality to crave for, the P5 4-strings shall definitely NAIL IT - period

I’m not a headless fan. I still feel the SRMS 805 is the better buy. I know it’s a matter of opinion and playability but that’s how I feel about the comparison.

Hey Lobster. I know you’re more keen to clean tones, but could you show off some mid-gain stuff in the future? Even just moderate settings on something like the Darkglass Vintage Ultra from Neural DSP could be enough. Either way, great job on the videos. You’ve pretty much sold me on the P5 as my first electric bass.

my guess is that the P5 gen2 is now "more vintage". I was not sure if I take the P5 or the P5R but the sound of the P5 gen2 cached me immediately. Look to swap the 5 string for a 4 string, less neck dive (one tuner less, thinner neck with same weighted body) and 5 string is not "vintage enough" for my personal taste.

WHERE ARE YOU??? 6 months away? Why??
