sam I think he'll sign a new deal and go in a year or two - can't see him finishing his career at United. Probably just stick with Valdes, but Lloris would be awesome.

Yep. I lived there for 18 years and all the German teams I played for spoke fluent English ....but I had to speak German in changing rooms. Couldn’t speak English haha steep learning curve

van der sar came in 2005 and oliver khan retired at 2008 so if we had bought khan around the 2003 mark then he probably played 5-6 years

Barthez was a decent keeper. He did make some mistakes, but he wasn’t a poor keeper like Taibi or Bosnich. He had some really good periods for us, playing in goal in 2 title winning sides. Think we just had such high standards after Schmiechel being so great for us.

You can yell these 2 are good good friends. Peter even understands his german. Some mite say he learnt german or speaks it. But I suspect Peter knows german because of Oliver & Oliver knows Danish because of Peter. My mind is blown. But it makes sense. They have the same personality & are both goalkeepers & both reached the pinnacle. Its amazing to see.

Goalkeepers Alliance. Also I'm fairly sure German is taught as a 2nd language in Denmark which will be why Schmeichel understands most of what Khan is saying. There's also a Danish speaking minority in Northern Germany near the border.

I remember him consoling another goalkeeper after his team beat the other while everyone was celebrating. Very respectful of Kahn . 👍

These two weren't just great goalkeepers. They were also leaders. De Gea has bags of ability but if were to take one thing from these guys, it would be that leadership quality. He's already becoming more vocal at the back which is really promising.

Aw man I so wish Oliver had gone to United, he'd have been brilliant for us!

If there were two keepers I used to fear in Europe of spoiling our chances at success, it was that man Oliver Kahn and Gianluigi Buffon. Absolute bastions of the game and to this day, even as a Man Utd and Milan fan, it’s so sad Buffon will probably never win a UCL.

It's lovely how he stayed true to Bayern.

Schmeichel & Kahn where two of best. Goalkeeper's in the world of The two i would say. Schmeichel was probably more. Athletic of the Two kahn was good, both have won the Champions League, Schmeichel won it with Manchester United, in 1999, and Kahn won it with Bayern Munich in 2001,⚽😃

With the deepest of respect to Peter Schmeichel, I wish he didn't leave in '99 and I wonder if he feels the same in hindsight.

Well, after that failure, it took us sometime, but we did by some luck rediscover Edwin van der Sar and restored him to greatness, again.

I hold it against him too cause had he have came definately we could have added one or two more champions league in the cabinet by now..

Can people help me understand how german players who have never played or lived in england speak so good English ? Does german and english have similar roots ? When Bastian spoke, he spoke with very few grammatical errors.

They start learning English in Primary School (or whatever Ze Deutsch equivalent is) in Germany between the ages of 5 & 8. Plus they're always exposed to the language via Music, TV Shows etc.

Taibi was the best replacement. He just didn't have time to grow.

He was immense in his debut against Liverpool and got man of the match. Funny how the howler was his one and only mistake and he was gone (although tbh, he didn’t have much of a career after us, so who am I to question the judgement of Sir Alex?)

Thank god we never signed him. I always thought Kahn was extremely overrated and he thought himself he was brilliant. He played with an abundance of arrogance like Neuer. It most be A German thing. But neither have come close the being as good as Schmeichel or De Gea.
