Sinkhole drains lake at Lone Elk Park

The reason behind - or underneath - the disappearing lake at Lone Elk Park
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A sinkhole the size of an SUV is draining the lake at Lone Elk Park.
The St. Louis County parks department employees first noticed the lake’s level was lower over the weekend. Then, they discovered the hole. So far, they estimate it has drained about one-third of the man-made lake - and counting.
County parks design and development manager Tobi Moriarty pointed to a couple of possible explanations for why the hole opened up, including the recent 2.4 magnitude earthquake that rumbled in Eureka and the park on April 20.
“It could be the additional head pressure from the higher lake elevation, but it very easily could've been that earthquake. That would make a lot of sense,” Moriarty said.
This isn’t the first time there’s been a sinkhole in the lake at Lone Elk Park. A similar hole formed in 2016. That one was 20 feet deep and 12 feet wide. It took about $25,000 worth of material to fix.

They don't know what's under that little whole. Could be a huge cavern that could eventually collapse

Could literally be a 500' deep cavern underneath and cause an incredible deadly collapse later

Could it have anything to do with the mine right by the park? Just curious.

Well, like a glacier, theyre much bigger underneath. My garage dissapeared because the former home owners didnt use rain gutters, after some investigation.

This happens alot. There will be a karst plane underneath with soluble rock like limestone/gypsum etc. There will be loads of cave networks carved through this for the subsurface water to flow downhill. A blockage cleared somewhere in the cave allowing flow to increase down through that cave where yhe water will eventually reemerge as a spring somewhere at lower altitude. This is less of a classic sinkhole as we think of it with a cavern dome collapong in on its left and creating the sinkhole though that could also be the case at which point through the sinkhole the water now had a way to flow down and into the cave network to follow its path downhill.

J it is possible to calculate how large quantities in cubic meters of oil and gas people have taken up from the subsoil since 1846

Instead of spending 25,000 on material to plug up and refill… they should have used that money to see what hidden catastrophe lies beneath…

H what gets into the ground when oil and gas are taken up? what material has the ability to stabilize the subsoil as good as oil and compressed gas nothing can replace Oil and Gas so subsoil worldwide is and will be unstable.

so the first refill was a tax paid bandaid and now some more outhouse filler material will be purchased to smooth out this hole

Amazing a California government employee who doesn't give some kind of flippant, leftist answer in response to a question involving their responsibilities. How refreshing! 😀
