Nothing wrong with PVC locknut traps. They just need a little lube to avoid the "false tight" situation you just encountered. Good job.

I used those traps in all 4 drains I just re-did last week. One that was there before already had pipe dope on the threads, so it must be no secret. I did test my shower and went downstairs to find water on the floor, but the union nut was tight. Then I grabbed the pipe it connects to, to see it move up and down a quarter inch. Whoops, that was a bad false tight scenario. Cross threaded or something. I also had galvanized pipe in my bathroom sink drain just like this house. PVC trap and galvanized at the wall, down. I cut that all out and was amazed to see the galvanized pipe nearly rusted closed at some areas. No regrets cutting it and changing that all out. Just a little drywall work to do now.
