Wonderful Mischa Auer ( the Swami) was the only one of these actors to achieve real film noteriety. Four years after this film he received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his hilarious role in "My Man Godfrey" with Carol Lombard and William Powell. Mischa had a tough childhood, his family barely escaped the Russian Revolution, settling in New York where Mischa went to work at a young age in the Yiddish theater to help support his family. He had a very long and successful film career mostly in comedic parts.

Maybe not in our vile, corrupt world of today. The streets where such a "theartre" would exist, would be filled with drug-addicted, hooded zombie thugs, looking for a dark place to crash and maybe find their next victim. The world you remember where such films as these were popular, no longer exists today. We allowed it to vanish by voting "demon-crat" through the decades.

I don't think my parents liked me.At the age of 12 I had a heart attack .My parents wrote for an ambulance!

I really like these Pre Code films...thanks for posting!!

A big house setting for a whodunnit murder mystery horror. The confusion arises when an ancient spiritual mystic meets western aristocrats in costumes typical of 1920s aristocrat fashion. The film is quite light-hearted but also commands attention to keep up with the detective plot.

The opening credits music was written by an inconsequential fellow named Franz Schubert who unfortunately never quite finished what he started here.

It's so funny to see men in those swimming-suits! Those days even men were "modest". I love this movie, thanks for sharing. Just keep posting similar like this!

Oh they did, that's why this is Pre Code, it wasn't until the 50s that Hollywood had to straighten out, what could be seen, and heard from the screen. A moral code! Behind closed doors tho it hadn't changed, People back then lead pretty wild lives, immorality was pretty bad, it' has just gotten so much worse. Now almost everything is acceptable! Sad that our world accepts just about everything that's shoved down our throats by Hollywood ! Some of those actresses had to sleep their way up Hollywood's ladder, to get anywhere. Their bosses expected and demanded it, for them to get anywhere, in the acting world. You want to get somewhere, you sleep with me! And preform any perverted sexual act that they wanted. Period. Sad indeed.

@@victoriataylor5457 , Harvey Weinstein' name comes to mind; on of the really evil moguls of Hollywood. The reality is that God gave us free will, freedom to choose. Sometimes people wisely and then other times not so well. But God did not give a special anointing to censors to override my free will, freedom to choose. I don't need no stinkin' government censors to dictate what I can see or read or hear. The reality is that politics is violence and political government is the bane of humanity; it is not Christian but imposes manmade "laws" and constitution that supplants Gods laws with Satan's filth. That said, I prefer the movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s as the language is cleaner and the perversion and immorality are not nearly as common as seen in the movies since the 1970s, well IMHO of course.

I laughed out loud when Swami called Watkins “Watson”. 😅

thanks. simple, entertaining, catchy, pre-code at its best. I'm addicted to those films, and James P. Burtis is terrific. I don't need him to say something, I don't need him to speak at all. he makes me laugh just by looking at him ;)

Siilent Films before 1924 are also not covered. Movies my grandmother and mother watched, these tell a little of their behaviors .... in retrospect.... little tells a lot sometimes.

Not sure how comfortable Schubert would have been in using his Unfinished Symphony as music for the opening titles....

I'm gonna be real careful to not call anyone else Watson, unless their name is actually Watson.

Another great Flick Pick PF. In a cast of somewhat spoiled and ungrateful people - the old man stood out as a pillar of common sense and decency. And the butler - showing true shame for his past - really turned a new leaf - and was loyal to the end - to his only true friend in the world - who gave him a break. Can a leopard change its spots???? Apparently so - if he sees the light. Thanks PF Hope you're doing well.

thank you for posting this it was a decent film some of the acting was a bit flat and stiff in some parts of the film but it got better i think. the murderer is who i thought it was going to be i'm not gonna post who it was really only because i found out who it was on another film i watched once and it did ruin the film for me.

Wonder what poison the judge took, never seen someone drop so fast .

Probably cyanide. It kills in under a minute. Of course, the real question is why he had the poison on him when he wasn't expecting to be caught.

Clever! Needed more Russian Mischa Auer, 27, his 30th film in the last 4 yrs; comedy/drama wizard. At the 2020 conversion rate, what's $9k more on top of a $37k mystic habit? Note to Franz, she's 33 yrs younger. Duh! Finally, anyone who wears spectator loafers can do no wrong and deserves more respect, Watkins.

@@miapdx503 That sounds like a challenge to put together. Still, I bet you could find those things piece by piece somewhere such as eBay, maybe in more specialized online stores. Would you want wool for the suit, or linen, or... ? Did you see that film Carol, with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara? The Carol character had clothes like that, I think.
