Sad when she said "not always romantic, fun you have people disrespecting your vehicle cause they think you are a bum, a vagrant or whatever." People should not be judgemental and assume the worst. People should be respectful and understand why an individual or a couple or a family live on buses or tiny homes. Since the pandemic, many people have moved towards tiny living to have less financial stress. Now in 2022, with apartment rents skyrocketing and mortgages going up along with everything else, people are moving into skoolies, vans, or tiny homes to survive financially. One day I too want to move into a tiny home on wheels. Julie I have respect for you and your vehicle. You did an amazing job creating your own tiny home on your bus. Know that you are not struggling financially to pay rising apartment rents, rising electric bills, etc. You did an awesome job, thank you for sharing! 💖

Thank you! I should add, those moments are not common. It's definitely become more acceptable over the years, with more people creating non-traditional dwelling spaces. Still, every once in awhile you get someone who has strong negative perceptions of your choice.

Hi you are fabulous. Wow. How georgous your home is. You are so good. Im in a financial crisis like others are. If i had the money. I would be a nomad a.s.a.p. ive lived in apts. For 47 yrs. My birthday is next month. I will be 75 yrs. Old. My husband dont understand. Why nomad life is better than what we. Are going through. He has been out of work for 6 months before the pandemic hit. The rent kerps going up. So if he doesnt get a job by sept. 1st. 22. We will be homeless. Even if wr had to live around town. Its bettet than being on the street walking. We have a subcompact car. It is not comfortable at all. It has a 1.7 engine. 4 drs. At least you did the right thing. Where did you by your schoolie at. Can you say how did you get your title transfered into a van. What did you tell the tax office. I live in texas. The cost of the license plates registration. Thank you. Please reply.

Usually folk that make fun of others, do so because they need someone to step on/bully and make a mockery of. (Often times because they want to dish out all that's been done to them. If they only knew what Time fastforwarding would do. For some, having "the works" (in life) will have them do and say things arrogantly.
In my life I've had neighbors with beautiful homes, jobs, families, etc. etc. I'd take her as a neighbor any day. I say that because I had to relocate after a fire, in Santa Cruz. I ended up living in a number of places, most notably near a bunch of college kids that had RV's, busses, vans, etc. Best neighbors I had in years. I'm >65. They appreciated their living quarters, like Kat does. I bet she would make a great neighbor. I'll leave it at that, but it's been a tough few years now... and I'm understanding who the 'real people' are around me.

Thank you, Kevin! One of the things I think makes this life work, especially in the city, is to be considerent of people around you. You're not as anonymous when living differently. People are watching your behavior closely. I think over time I gained trust and respect of the community I chose to live amongst. I kept communications open and it worked out well. I appreciate your comment very much!
Such a lovely home. It seems so cozy. You did a fantastic job. Don't let anyone give you a hard time. Lots of time people are just jealous.
So much respect for her. She has done an amazing job on that home. WOW I'm so impressed.

I wish I knew about Skoolie life when I was younger and my kids where home. Being a single mom I struggled a lot to keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellys. While working 2 jobs the whole time. If I knew about skoolie life I would have done it in a heartbeat, when my kids were younger. We could of had so much more quality time together and able to travel to see the country. Me and my kids love to travel and camp. This would have been a wonderful life for us. My kids are now grown and on their own. I'm getting older and ready to retire. Now I'm getting ready to start my own adventure in a short skoolie. I don't need a big bus now its just me and maybe my kids from time to time for a vacation trip... I think this Mom is doing the right thing living on a school bus with her son. What wonderful memories they will make. So much less stress not having to worry about rent or where your going to live. No one can take her home away from her and her son she owns her home now. This life style has to be freeing for her and the stress level must be way down, she can now breath not worrying so much. My hat is off to her, I wish her and her children all the best. I think this mom is smart to live on a school bus with her son it make a lot of sense to me....

Thank you! We're probably around the same age. My kids are grown and have independent lives. My son is 21 and travels with me. We're currently working on an organic farm in upstate NY. @@Katmondieu 2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle. Twenty-four months twenty-four thousand miles around South America. Alaska, Panama, all over North and Central America. Summers up rough logger tracks to remote mountain lakes, winters on isolated Baja beaches. . Our interior is 7w x 12l x 7h, about 700cf... perfect for three RedHeelers and two adults (plus a frequent yummy third!). . For the last couple-three years, we workkamp a small organic teaching farm near the outskirts of Eugene, Oregon. We share the acreage with a couple-three dozen semi-permanent travelers in various versions of home-built ExpeditionVehicles and RecreateVehicles.
I'm glad she knows what's right for her. I have seen people living in school buses in my town. It's not the elegant lifestyle some youtubers make it out to be, but what else can they do when a house on a street is financially impossible? Who wants to put all their money into rent? Not me, but I do.
Kat did an excellent job with this Skoolie - it has so much charm and character. It has soul :)

I honestly wish I had the freedom to start this bus journey with my kids when they were younger. Alas they were fairly grown when I started it: 24, 18 & 16. My girls had already left home. My son spent the most time on the bus as I stayed in the city 2 more years as he finished high school, then one more year for work.
You did a wonderful job on ur bus conversion. I could live in it very easily with what youve done with it. I love how you did the kitchen and the sinks are really cool! Ive never seen sinks like those before. Be very proud. Thank you for sharing your home Be safe, stay well, and God bless

Thank you! I found the sink at a Habitat-like store called "The Big ReUse" in Brooklyn. It was perfect for the bus!
I love it when she said the bus is "me". I think the way she has customized the small space to suit her needs and desires is yet another example of why alternative living gives one a real independence more than that of buying an apartment and paying for a mortgage for years etc. This mobile home is also green - a big thumbs up to her brother in the solar sector. As to judging Kat, well yes they should, she should get five stars out of five, because the future of our planet should be greener, more diverse and mindful of who and where we are. When I think of all those millions cooped up in apartments and depressed over bills which haunt them until their last days - the life in small and alternative spaces is really and truly a blessing. So Kat you have my vote, and I by the way loved all the working. Look at the repurpose of the IKEA furniture. Daily I see so much waste. People have lost the skills of their forebears and it has led to more waste and pollution. Yes the future needs to be alternative.

You have so many unique ideas (and thank goodness), didn't show every nook and cranny of your home and where everything is kept and located. It's like I just got a tour of a vintage mobile museum. Michelle, 2003, as we scribbled our RequirementsStatement -- on a brown paper grocery bag -- for our ExpeditionVehicle, we focused on positive travels. A couple-three years ago, we developed a fresh RequirementsStatement... focusing on a workkamp on a small organic farm near Eugene, Oregon. As we scribbled on a brown grocery bag, we quickly realized the simplest route to find our potential cow-orkers... at Farmer Markets. And this's the darnedest thing -- our workkamp acreage has the four mules we requested in our RequirementsStatement. . How are you coming with your RequirementsStatement?

You have a beautiful spirit . You don't have to explain what you do. I think that people in general are afraid of new things, different concepts , anything out of normal. The days of having a place to live to own is fast becoming out of reach . The bus conversion is a way to answer . You are safe, your rent is not going to double. The things you carry or create are the things you love . If you decide to purchase some land , park your bus build a shelter over the whole thing , landscape your oasis , one day you can have your serenity and made people ever so jealous. I think people forget the way the ancestors started, in caves, in sod houses, one room houses. Additional rooms added as family grew.

Your build truly looks like a home, and it obviously is reflective of you. As you have a wood stove in your bus, did you have any issues with vehicle insurance? Georgiann, Today on the skoolie forum, I saw several busses for sale. Some, converted. Some, partials after the converters lost initiative. . My preference: Empty... toss in some car-camping gear, go have fun. Allow the conversion to evolve organically, based on your use. . Suggestion: * avoid trying to dup a stand-still house inside an 8x20. Example: In our ExpeditionVehicle, we have no cabinets above waist-level, giving a visual and visceral sense of openness to a closed space. As you might expect, less 'storage' requires less stuff. Take up harmonica, quit them tuba lessons.

It fits in 2 parking spaces so I can park it anywhere you can park a car. Beside public parks and in National parks are usually a good bet. Do research for the area. Ask permission of businesses for overnight parking. Follow parking rules. It also depends how your bus is registered. A commercial registration has different rules than a privately registered vehicle.
