    Thank you so much! I picked up the flute in school band, it was a very basic class and if I played wrong my sound was drowned by the other instruments so I did things my way because I sounded good compared to the other beginners-- I know I was terrible. Recently I got my own flute and I realized that I had a sound problem, I thought it was the flute but it was the fact that I was not tounging. And I'm reminded that things are so for a very good reason! Haha My sound is much better now thanks again!!

    How do you get noise out during the faster notes rather than just the sound of air? It's hard, when playing 16th notes, for example, for me to get enough air in to make a clear note rather than an airy sound.

  • @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Usually when a flutist is making noise when they are tonguing it is because the tonguing action has not been built up enough. You need to practice single/double/triple tonguing exercise EVERYDAY starting very slowly and going faster as the tongue gets stronger. Also make sure you keep the tongue down low in the mouth and the teeth open. David

  • @helpsavethehumans

    @helpsavethehumans

    DrDavidandJudiKlee What do you mean by "down low in the mouth"? I have only ever single-tongued, but I'd like to learn to double- and triple-tongue. However, even when I'm single-tonguing, which I've been doing for years, it's difficult for me to get tones out during really fast runs. They go by so quickly that it's mostly just air rather than a clear tone with each note. (If I slur the notes, then obviously it's much easier to get the tones out because there is a constant air flow rather than short bursts of air.)

  • @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    9 жыл бұрын

    helpsavethehumans There is a limit as to how fast you can single tongue. I have had 1-2 students that could single up to 132 to the quarter note. Most flutists cannot single any faster than 70-85 to the quarter note. The tongue needs to remain low in the mouth (pull the back of the tongue downward toward the lower jaw) other than the tip that is used for the articulating. David

    Hi! That is a great question! I once asked one of my former flute teachers the same question. Her answer was that we use different muscles when we say it verses actually using it when playing the flute. But I also have read where a different flute teacher stated that it was a great way to practice when you don't have your flute with you. I practice all the time such as saying it when I am driving. I would say to just go ahead and practice it whenever you have a moment or two. Good luck! David

    What advice do you have for synchronizing double tounging with different fingerings? My double tounging is decent but it becomes an issue when I'm playing different notes.

  • @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi!! Usually if the fingers are not synced with the tongue that means that you have not been practicing slow enough and long enough to get them to work together. This is a very slow process over weeks and months. I would also work with a metronome and gradually increase the tempo ONLY after it is absolutely smooth and clean. Good luck!!!! David

  • @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    Chances are you need to open your teeth more and possibly even your throat. Many or my flute teachers, I have had, always stressed whenever double/triple tonguing always open your teeth more. It is almost like yawning with your lips together. Try that. David

    I expect I'm being dense, but with double tonguing is it simply that the first movement of the tongue is forward and the second movement is back , each movement bringing with it a momentary block to the air flow? Or is the throat itself blocked on the second movement?

    Glad the video is helping! To help the articulation in the low notes try to open the teeth more and make sure to use your low range embouchure (more flat and lips pulled back). David

    Are there ways to tongue softly? I don't wish to use the "la" sound to replace the tonguing, but I'd like it to be softer and less noticeable when I play for recordings.

    I use da-ga for all my double tonguing whether soft or loud. You can try moving the mic a bit further away from the flute when recording. You should be 6-10 inches away. Hope this helps! David

    Thanks again David! I know of a elementary-school band teacher who is using the "pooh" syllable for her beginning flutists just learning to single-tongue. I understand that there is something called "French tongueing" using this. Seems a bad idea to teach this?

  • @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi!! I do not teach the French style of tonguing simply because I do not use it. Some teachers use it very successively. It is where the tongue touches between the front teeth instead of above the top teeth. Good luck!! David

    Hello Dr. David, Are there any alternatives for the 3rd Octave High E note? I find that note suprsingly harder to play properly. Funingly enough, I can play much higher notes on the fourth and fifth octaves fine. If you could give any insights into this note it would be much appreciated! ;))

    To lower the pitch of the 3rd octave E you can play it without the little pinky finger on the right hand. That brings the pitch down 20-30 cents. David

    Hello sir, is practising 10 min. a day for 6 months enough for professional tounging? Or I need to increase my practice time?

  • @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    @DrDavidandJudiKlee

    6 жыл бұрын

    There is a direct correlation between input and output when it comes to results from practicing. A non-professional needs to build different areas of their technique-this requires alot of effort to do this. A professional who has already worked long and hard may only need to practice to maintain their technique. The long to the short means that as a non-professional you have to work harder AND longer to develop your technique than a professional. To really develop your tonguing you probably need to work your way up to 20-30 minutes or more or various tonguing and articulation exercises. I would suggest the Taffanel/Gaubert 17 Daily Exercises for the flute to start with. Good luck!! David
