Enjoy our version of an old action-oriented spaghetti Western when Kentucky Life host Dave Shuffett joins the Hooten Old Town Regulators of McKee in a Single Action Shooting Competition.
In this target shooting competition, people use firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West. Single action firearms must be manually cocked before each shot. Hooten Old Town has a shoot-out each month at its facility just outside McKee.
The Single Action Shooting Society is as much about preserving cowboy heritage as it is target shooting. Participants adopt an identity appropriate for the 19th century. Hooten Old Town is set up to look like an Old West town, with a saloon, jail, blacksmith, and hangman's gallows.
Armed with his cowboy alias, Driftin' Dave, and sporting cowboy clothes, Dave tries his hand at some Old West marksmanship.

Ya put that thumb there when you shoot that rifle... What happens when you actually shoot a round that produces recoil? That’s why SASS isn’t for me, I’d rather shoot slower and manage recoil. I actually use these weapons in the back country and what is going on here just is realistic.

Shoot full case of black powder out of 44-40 and dont wrap my thumb, you absolutely can control real recoil in that manner

Ok dumb question time....Why are the targets so close? Would it not be a more realistic challenge if they were farther away?

In the old west it was across a table or down the bar. A room of 10 or 15 feet. Or in the street. The sixgun was designed for close up shooting.

It is a single action revolver. Pulling the trigger only releases the cocked hammer unlike a double action which cocks the hammer and then releases it.
